If you read ecology books printed in the 70s and 80s, they were absolutely convinced that whales and tigers would not survive the century. There's a whole plot in Star Trek about how whales are extinct actually. Here in Argentina, we were sure that yaguaretés would have gone extinct. It was thought that rainforests would be forever lost, because there was no way that such complex ecosystems would be restored.

The bald eagle almost went extinct in the US. That’s right, our national symbol. Pollution and insistence on using deadly chemical pesticides like DDT - which thankfully was banned in 1972. And after that, some other bird species we almost lost like the Peregrine Falcon started to come back too. Neither is on the endangered list at all any more.

Just a note, Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons didn't just come back. DDT killed entire generations of birds of prey. DDT caused the parents laid thin-shelled eggs and when they went to incubate them, they crushed them, killing the chicks. It took decades of concerted effort to bring them back from the brink. Scientists and conservationists hand-reared what eggs did survive in order to release young adult birds back into the wild. At the same time, people were working hard to neutralize the effects of DDT in the ecosystem and prevent something similar from happening in the future.

I grew up during the '70s and '80s that @elbiotipo mentioned. At the same time everyone was certain that we'd lose whales, tigers, bald eagles, and more by the turn of the century, we were all equally sure that we'd all be wearing gas masks and buying oxygen from vending machines because air pollution would be so bad. You have no idea how bad a Smog Alert in Los Angeles was, but the EPA turned that around with clean air regulations and emission standards.
