i am also pretentious about books & i don’t wanna overstate my point here bc i have not been reading much fiction of any genre lately but it does make me giggle a bit how sometimes debates about the quality of literature will feature people earnestly demanding that romantasy readers branch out by reading more litfic as though in any given bookstore there are not 3000 litfic bestsellers featuring different shades of the same weary & beautiful white woman bemoaning the emotional difficulties of her life in new york city etc. she’s like the litfic version of the beautiful white woman bemoaning the emotional difficulties of falling in love with a 6’4 fey king in romantasy lol

among my least favourite conversations i regularly experience in media analysis is when you interpret something as potentially alluding to an "uncomfortable" topic and people immediately start trying to defang it. "this reads like a rape scene" "umm actually it's not rape, it's just a very intimate act of violent assault that violates the victim's sense of safety and bodily autonomy with NO 🙅 sexual connotations or elements". you do realise that's neither any better nor functionally different, right?
