This implies that during the Golden Age of Narnia, the monarchs of the kingdom had no idea that they weren't living on a round planet. This leaves one of two equally funny options:
A) Nobody ever bothered to mention to their monarchs that the world was flat. It simply never came up, and nobody in Narnia ever realized that this wasn't background knowledge they had.
B) The Pevensies assumed that everyone who told them that the world was flat was just a result of Narnian science being less advanced, and that telling people about the world being round would be too disruptive to bother with.
my finished tarot cards so far, im having a lot of fun with these! the only one missing here is the wheel of fortune, which i finished last week but i havent scanned yet. these are all made with scraps collaged and sewn into rectangles of jean fabric. i love my sewing machine so much but i do want to try handsewing one of the cards at some point, even if its not as time efficient

Strictly speaking, "ultimate" means "last", not "best". It's often figuratively employed in the latter sense to suggest that the thing so described is the final word on the subject, after which nothing more need be said, but if we're being real technical, describing a game or movie that was so bad it killed its entire franchise as the "ultimate" is in fact correct.

It's Latin for "nearly" or "almost", and it does pop up in a few other English words. "Penultimate", "penumbra" and "peninsula" are the only ones I can think of that you'd even remotely expect to encounter in everyday speech, though; the rest are all medical or mathematical jargon.

common advice for social anxiety is to tell yourself "people aren't going to think less of you just because you said something a bit daft" but the thing is. sometimes they will. and you just have to learn to be cool with that and to treat it as a dnd random encounter rather than letting it ruin your whole day
recent example. lady at my careers appointment had a post-it with her name on it stuck to the monitor, so i introduced myself by saying cheerfully "hello, i'm eliot! you must be [name], it's nice to meet you!" and she stared at me as if i was the stupidest person alive and said icily, "yeah, i'm [name]. congratulations, you can read."
in bygone times this would have reduced me to a sort of quivering blancmange. thankfully i am now in a place where i was able to pull back, evaluate this interaction, and say to myself "this woman should probably not be working in a customer-facing job"

Most sourcebooks do need more big stupid tables.
(I'll freely grant that my preoccupation is partly an aesthetic thing, but it's not just that. One of my biggest pet peeves with indie tabletop RPGs is how many of them will put the player or GM in a position where they need to Make Something Up in order to render the thing functional, then not provide any worked examples of what that might look like. Like, who exactly is the game designer here, you or me? I strive to always provide at least a dozen worked examples β and more is better β in any situation where one of my games asks the player or GM to Make Something Up, and you know what's an engaging and high-utility way to concisely present a large number of worked examples? A big stupid table.)
There's also something to be said about the size of a table in relation to its expected frequency of use and how that affects the players perception of of how long a game is meant to last
A table with only six options that's supposed to be consulted once per session caps your games total play time at less than a dozen sessions before things start getting repetitive
Quite so. I've touched on this before, but random lookup tables that are far too small for their stated purpose are a frequent vice of indie RPGs. A table of Weird Shit that's ostensibly meant to be rolled on at least once per scene but only has a dozen total entries is just making the hypothetical GM do your work for you in a more roundabout way.
This has been a recurring theme in my Arden Vul Homework series. I think the idea was that listing the individual contents of 352 burial niches would be unwieldy to navigate - but also if there's over 300 of the things you probably need more than 30 entries on the "what's in this niche?" table.
Or, you know, scrap the idea of searching niche by agonizing niche entirely. There's no decisions being made except whether you happened to roll poorly for the first few and then decided to give up (missing multiple magic items and thousands of gp worth of valuables)
The necessary corollary to "make sure your random lookup tables are large and varied enough to sustain interest across the expected number of rolls without kicking out lots of potentially annoying duplicate results" is, of course, "consider carefully why you are expecting so many rolls to be made on this particular table in the first place".

Iβm starting to realize that I misread Feet of Clay when I first read it and just carried that misreading with me until now.
In the last bit of the book, Vetinari gives the poisoned candle to Drumknott, revealing that he had learned about the plot early and had been feigning his symptoms to keep Vimes prodding into the heralds and the guilds, while actually snipping off the candles to make them look like they had burned down to stubs.
I misread this that instead Vetinari had learned about the plot and was still snipping off the poisoned candles, but was still burning enough of them to poison him a little bit. Enough to keep up the symptoms, but never enough to actually kill him. As a treat, I guess. For fun.
And when I first read the book Vetinari read to me as such a little freak (affectionate) that I never thought to question this until now
