Dog is All Jacked Up

Gaza today is broken in ways that are hard to describe. Everything has changed, and the homes that were once full of life are now just memories. Tents are everywhere, as if we are living through an ending that never ends.

ok i finished the red winter by cameron sullivan. this book was both very deliberate and thorough and also lacking in so many departments. what i can say in its favor is that the depiction of theology and mythology was super interesting, and ive never seen anyone else do it exactly like he did it. i thought the way he wrote the motivations and abilities and influences of different divine and celestial beings to be very compelling..... it was definitely the best part of the book to me. the worldbuilding and historical elements were so excellent. but in every aspect concerning the characters i feel really unsatisfied. the romance was interesting to me not in the sense that it felt emotional and meaningful, but that the characters involved were so explicitly male and masculine. it truly felt like two very masculine homosexual men in a relationship with each other, and in that way, it was definitely very realistic to the time period, but it left me with a bit of a hollowness in the lack of convincing evidence to prove to me how much these men wanted and loved each other....hard to explain. i just didnt feel connected to it. also, the general depiction of women was woefully lacking and shallow.... every woman had to be either irredeemable or a beacon of unique intrigue and power. very objectifying -- not to mention the way that the succubus was written. god . i really didnt like that. i thought she was interesting but i wasnt a fan of how the narrative and other characters reacted to her.
