and this has to do with a lot of things. it has to do with the fact that dean is very bad at engaging with his own emotions and experiences and so frequently processes them into an undifferentiated Badfeeling which comes out as surliness, grumpiness, and anger. it has to do with the fact that dean is afraid, all the time, inescapably. his life is dominated by fear. and he desperately craves the feeling that someone is taking care of things (this feeling also contributes to his control issues - if he doesn't feel like anyone else if taking care of things, he'll do it himself - but that's a separate though related issue). and so he lashes out hoping to be punished, because if he's punished, that means someone is handling stuff. it has to do with the fact that dean is intensely emotionally driven, he only knows how to react from his gut. he doesn't think about his actions or analyze them, and certainly not before he does them. it has to do with the fact that dean looks in the mirror and sees a four year old boy, because when he was four years old he looked in the mirror and saw an adult man. he was forced to grow up too fast and became trapped in childhood, desperate always to be parented and cared for.

but the problem, of course, is that other people aren't in dean's head. they can't read his mind, they don't share his image of himself, and they can't see through his deceptions. dean isn't a child, he is a large, terrifying adult man. the people around him have no way of telling whether the anger he displays is this kind of emotional smart ass masochism or genuine fury, all they know is that if it's genuine fury they had better not cross him.

Jamie glances at Roy on the bike behind him. "What?"

"Look where you're fucking going," Roy snaps, and Jamie looks back ahead just in time to dodge someone wheeling a pram. "I said, what the fuck did you mean when you said you were flattered that everyone thought you were gay? Why is that flattering?"

Jamie is confused for a moment that he's bringing this up now, then remembers Roy wasn't in the room for that. Someone must have mentioned it to him. "Always wanted to be gay," he explains.

"Why?"

Jamie shrugs. "Better clothes. Better clubs. Way better hookup apps. Plus, men are dead sexy."

There is a very long silence. Jamie glances back again just to make sure Roy hasn't fallen off the bike.

"You think men are sexy," Roy says flatly. "As in, you would like to have sex with them?"

"Yeah," Jamie sighs. "I think about it all the time."

Another long silence, then: "Have you ever heard the word bisexual?"

"Oh yeah, that's people who get to bang both! The fucking dream, innit. Wish that were me."

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.

Ilya putting out his cigarette in the really nice vodka even though the ash tray is right there because he can't ask Shane to hand it to him because even that is being too emotionally vulnerable. Ilya also not savoring/appreciating the thing he described as a prize because it's not really the thing he needs right now oooooo it's a metaphor

Shane has the ash but isn't offering it up because either that feels too much like crossing an emotional line and/or because he's too focused on the fear he has about Ilya and Russia that was founded back during the Olympics and has just been festering for six months and he needs the reassurance more than he wants to actually recognize Ilya's needs in the moment and that he's actually exasperating Ilya's issue seeking his own comfort ooooo character introspection lmao.
