The more i think about it, the more I think the movie Gattaca (1997) has a metric shitload of trans vibes to it.
The scene where the guy is scraping off all his dead skin cells so he doesn't leave a trace of his "invalid" self in the "valid" world and there's this monumental music, and here I am shaving and the same music is going through my head because like, yeah, too much stubble? suddenly "invalid", not just losing my femininity in the eyes of others but often risking getting de-gendered and de-humanised on top of that by them, just because of a tiny amount of facial hair remaining. "Wrong" eyebrow plucking, "wrong" clothing, sit or walk in the "wrong" way? Take up too much space? Voice a little too deep?
Serano had it right when she talked about how trans women are constantly at risk of randomly losing not just their femininity but also their personhood based on their perceived gender.
The PLOTTING in this movie is so fucking smooth oh my fucking god, just there's multiple layers of arcs, and nothing in the plot is wasted. A moment earlier in the film will come back later in a new light or to haunt you, it's incredible.
The part where he's like "That's how I did it, I never saved anything for the swim back" are very, very strongly trans. Just impeccably so.
Anyway, you should rewatch Gattaca.
