Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
Iâd rather carry you.

if youâve been following me for 4+ years iâm certain you could make a chart of every character iâve gotten attached to and it would tell you more about me than any therapistâs notes ever could. but we donât have the time for that. there are other things at hand. do not even worry about it. next exhibit. weâre moving along. weâre walking
âiâm noticing.. a patternââ well stop noticing. close the book. Put it away. step outside and have a cigarette or something. close your eyes. itâs not worth it

so this guy right he makes ancient egyptian themed furry costumes. he makes all kinds but mostly he specializes in Horus heads. it's his passion really. he loves to make the beautiful falcon head of the Sun God. anyway so he's at a con one day and he sees this whole bunch of people in middle kingdom dress with these indistinguishable animal heads. he's like. oh man these folks could really use a new source, i can hardly tell what animal those are! so he goes over and he says "hey guys! i see you are into ancient egyptian mythological themed furry costumes--if any of you are interested in being the radiant Son of Ra, I am the BEST in the business!"
and the group of people look at each other, then at him. awkward. finally one of them says: "uh. no thanks. we're all Set."
This has been sent to me four times today, so I'm condemning OP to be judged by the 42 and fall into Nuun.
I think every laugh will make OPâs heart a bit lighter.

Iâve been experimenting more with collage recently! Please enjoy this Nona the Ninth inspired piece that I madeâNona is my favorite of the series, and cutting up old National Geographicâs gave me lots to work with for this piece

I really wanted to draw Stolas and Blitzø nin the old demonology style, i started this drawing like foreeeever ago and then @tench-art convinced me to finally finish it so yaaaayy Happy New Year!!!
Awesome work.
Cosmic love.
If I had a nickel every time a man carrying the dead/dying body of someone important to them for miles, revived them because of their inability to continue living without the other which defies the autonomy of their significant other's will and body, I would have two which is not a lot but it's a lot to witness and move on from
The problem with giving advice to angry and suffering people is that rather frequently the thing they need to know to improve their position is the last thing they want to hear and not something they have the capacity to internalize or accept
Unfortunate truths you can tell people that would help if they could hear what it means and not just what it sounds like
You were the victim, and it wasnât fair, but itâs over now. Nobody came to save you, and Iâm sorry, but itâs too late for anyone to go back and do it different.
Youâre suffering over something that cannot be resolved. Youâre allowed to feel angry, or outraged, or betrayed, but there will eventually come a time that you donât feel that so violently anymore, and youâre going to want to have something good left to go back to.
You canât make anyone love you the way you need to be loved. Thatâs how a lot of good things end. Not with a clear sign, something blocking the road that says âdo not proceedâ, just a splitting of the path thatâs still moving somewhat in the same direction.
You canât fix them. Nothing you can do will fix them. And if they fix themselves, they canât do it for you- they have to do it for themselves as well, because otherwise a day may come when theyâre alone, and as long as they live, they are their only true constant. So you can support, and you can encourage, but the hardest part is up to them. And sometimes they canât do it even with your help.
Sometimes letting go of someone feels like mourning at their funeral before theyâve died, and every time you see them after itâs like talking to a ghost that doesnât know itâs dead. Sometimes that happens. Youâll both still wake up tomorrow anyways.
I understand that youâre afraid, and that youâre afraid for good reasons. And I understand that being brave isnât as easy as just turning that fear off, and you would if you could in a heartbeat. But the thing is, as long as that fear is able to dictate your choices, it will have power over you. If you donât believe you can try to fight it, if you accept that it will always be in charge, you let the frightening thing stay present in your life. It will exist as long as you stay paralyzed. And that sounds cruel, but it isnât something anyone can fix for you.
The person you may let yourself become after experiencing the terrible thing may very well grow into a much bigger, much more terrible thing, and someday it will swallow the first terrible thing whole. And all that will be left is something far worse for someone else. And you will not be able to shrink it down by explaining where it came from, because terrible things that are dead and gone are never as terrible as terrible things that are alive right now in front of you.
No matter how much or how little I love you, I still do not have the ability to help you the way you need to be helped. I might be the helper you want, but I am not a helper you can get. If you are to be helped at all, you will need to accept that it will come from someone else.
Am I wet? Am I on my period? Did I pee my pants?- next on wtf is going on down there.
Iâm so glad this is a universal wondering among vagina-owners, haha.
âVagina-ownersâ
Tune in next time for: Are these menstrual cramps? Am I pregnant? Is it just gas? I wouldnât have to ask these questions if I didnât have a damn uterus
Next week: Is it a bladder infection? An ovarian cyst? Do I have endometriosis? Oh God please do not let it be cervical cancer! A 20/20 special
Y'all are forgetting the all-time classic: Is it just my period or is my appendix about to burst? Some nice tea and a heatpack or 911 and emergency surgery?
There is actually a test for that last one!
Place your hand over the pain, press down slightly and release. If the pain doesnât change by any great margin, youâre fine. If it suddenly becomes some painful you can barely stand, Get thee to an Emergency Room
reblog for the safety of vaginas and their owners
The appendix test works with or without a vagina so reblogging for everyone.
Reblogging because I didnât know this and it needs to be shared.
Rebloging because idk whats going on down there rn
Reblogging because I want people to stay safe
reblogging because who the fuck knows
reblogging because Iâm sorry that we have to have a body

one time I saw a photo of a skinned whale/dolphin flipper on reddit or something and I've just never recovered
there's just. A paw in there.
One of the most spiritually profound moments of my life was when I was sixish and at a natural history museum with my parents that had a whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.
I remember my dad picking me up to sit on his shoulders (possibly one of the last times he did that because I was getting too big to hold there for long) so I could be close to it's flipper because he wanted to show me something. He had me hold up my arm parallel to the whale's, and explained that we had the same bones, pointing to it's scapula and humerus and radius and ulna and so on while poking the same bones in my skinny little arm, all they way down to the tips of my fingers and it's own.
And in that moment, I could suddenly see how the whale and I were the same animal, just stretched and shrunk into different proportions by nature. There was an entire exhibit with skeletons of different animals and we went through all of them, picking out the hands and faces of all of them on myself.
I had never felt such a profound connection to the world around me before as I realized on a visceral level that not only was I related to all these creatures, they were very literally my distant cousins, and that in a way, they were me from back then and I was them from now, and we all were others still from the future.
Every living thing on earth is your cousin. The most distantly related humans are your 50th cousins. Chimps are your several thousandth cousins. An octopus is your 25 millionth cousin. Trees are your billionth cousins. You and I are surrounded by family. And that makes me feel profoundly loved.
So thanks dad, for pulling your shoulder a bit to show me that I am part of the universe. I love you too.
