Last week, a kid was murdered in my country. He was an effeminate guy beaten to death “on suspicion of being gay.” His school is denying the incident occurred, and there are a lot of “good Christians” justifying the senseless killing.

I’ve been upset since I heard the news. Angry. Scared. Exhausted. I have felt this way before, and I’ll feel this way again. Because, as awful as it is to say, it’s nothing new.

Every once in a while, a queer person gets killed, and the response is the same. I watch the good, stand-up citizens who decry the bad governance, corruption, and state-sponsored terrorism that has led to the deaths of thousands rejoice when they hear that the person who died is gay.

I often wonder when things will change, if my people will ever truly be free. I conclude the same thing over and over again: probably never. Definitely not in my lifetime. Maybe not even in three lifetimes.

I try to think of solutions but I really can’t see a way out. And when this inevitably happens again, I will be plagued by the same thoughts.
