Stupid is timeless.
Iâm that lady whoâs just FEELING it
tbh cables were like that and safety precautions werenât hard set in yet
Oh wow this is horrifying
Holy shit
Why donât we see this kind of stuff more in history books?! Iâd be way more interested in history if I understood that people were afraid of electricity because they were afraid of power lines slicing them to peices like cheese-wire! History books make it sound like âoh those silly people thought electricity carried demons or something!â Rather than âthose poor people opposed electricity because they were terrified that eventually there would be so many power lines they wouldnât be able to see the sun anymore.â
Forbidden Zipline
Me, reading about people fearing electricity when it was invented: well, people always fear changes and the new, so-
*further reads about the madness that was the massive powerlines and its horrifying lack of safetyâ
-you know what. I would do the exact same: be terrified of the âgiant electricity spiderâ.
also if any of those zillions of lines snappedâwhich im betting they did more than zero times!â you would have anything from a brief and scary lightshow to a deadly thrashing snake dropped down to street level to shoot lightning into anything iron or copper, which back then was cars, carriages, drainpipes, canes, buckles, umbrellas, signposts. how happy was a carthorse going to be with electricity grounding itself on its harness or bit? how safe was a kid with everyone running around and cars crashing and horses flipping their shit? what happens when a man uses a steel-framed umbrella to try and smack the cable away?
people in the past were the correct amount of scared of electricity! modern people just forgot all sense.

step one to overcoming social anxiety is to realize that most people kind of suck and their opinion of you is literally worthless
Random fact: They did a study on courtship and mating behavior of American alligators at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm in the early 1980's. This study revealed that, among other things, the majority of alligator sex is gay
Male/male 1 is when the larger male gator topped, male/male 2 is when the smaller male topped
Pegging (female/male) on the rise.
@darthumbreon
This is so true.

No lie is detected. Just pick up a Tamora Pierce book.
Just me?
.
.
This.
This is why people who stay in my life are neurodiverse like me!
this!! I swear I lost like all my friendships bc of this, like I had a group of friends in hs that one day I realized "huh I haven't talked to this people in a while" and popped in to say hi and they were all awkward?? because they hadn't seen me in a while?? and that's when I realized that friendship works different for them?? I was like yeah I haven't talked to you in like four months but it's not like I've forgotten about y'all why would anything change, and they were all like we haven't talked to you in four months why are you here again acting like nothing happened? and it was really confusing for me
YEAH! THAT!
Also I have a thing where I just put the people on pause. If I donât see them or contact them, my brain kinda put them in stasis. I donât think about them nor misses them, and I stay on what I last knew about them (how they look, what they study/work). So when we meet again Iâm like âwait, youâve aged?â and I have the same familiarity with them thanI had before.
Anyway all my mutuals I haven't messaged in forever - this is why
oh my gods this makes so much sense??? there are people who i havenât talked to at all for literally over a year and weâll pick up like nothing happened, but for their people itâs just like...... falling apart but onesided???? i think weâre still on the same level but actually weâre strangers??
Ohhhhhh
OHHHHHHHHH....
Ok but listen, on the other side of this, as a person who moved hundreds of miles away from everyone i knew and then became a hermit for several years, it was SUCH A FUCKING RELIEF to get in contact with an old friend and have him be like, "my friendship levels do not degrade, so in my mind we are still awesome close buddies" and i almost fkn cried. I thought he would be mad or would have moved on because i had slacked on my reaching out to him and staying in touch and doing all the friendship things. But NOPE. 800 miles of distance, depression, and life changing circumstances didnt steal our friendship and i am SO GRATEFUL.
ok!
Wait... Does this apply for people who neurodivergent view as enemies? That their anger and grudges don't degrade with time? Is that why some people will hold a grudge for life vs forgive and forget?
@definitelynotscott this gives me an idea for my novel

can someone explain the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strike to me like I'm a child. who does it affect, what can I as a consumer do to help, what does it mean for both current and future productions, etc. etc.
The writers' guild (WGA) and actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) of America are both on strike as of today, July 13. Both guilds have good reason to believe the future of their industries rests on getting better contract protections against AI, against understaffing and underpaying, against laughably small residual payments, and more. (Read the WGA's demands and the studios' absurdly terrible responses here.)
This primarily affects American TV shows and films, though international productions and co-productions with any American guild members working on them (such as House of the Dragon) are also affected by work stoppages. For a more comprehensive list of overseas shows/films affected by the imminent actors' guild strike, see here.
What it means for actors and writers is that they will be picketing the studios and out of a job for the foreseeable future (previous WGA strikes lasted 100+ days; this one might be longer.)
Fans and the public can financially support both the striking writers/actors and the below-the-line crew and support staff affected by the strike via the Entertainment Community Fund or the Green Envelope Grocery Aid fund (more info on Twitter here, on Tumblr here.)
Neither the WGA nor SAG-AFTRA has officially called for a boycott of streaming services; the main issue right now is drying up studio pipelines of film/TV to really hit them where it hurts: running out of shows and films to premiere. Strikes are supposed to hurt, and when this fall rolls around and the networks/streaming services suddenly don't have anything new, that will hurt.
It's up to each individual to decide to cancel streaming services in solidarity or not. (Keep in mind that shows premiering before the fall were already in the can before the strike was called and might depend on viewership for another season. Also, if a future official boycott is called down the line, you may want to maintain your leverage for that.)
Current productions have been halted and future productions will be delayed until the strike is over. In the meantime, watch old stuff and vocally support the strikers via social media & to any IRL friends/family who may not know as much as you about the current state of the entertainment industry!

Campaigner has used the idea drawn from Discworld novels to register the disproportionate effect price rises have on the lower paid
""The index, Monroe said, is named in honour of Pratchettâs creation Sam Vimes, who in the Discworld novel Men at Arms lays out the âSam Vimes âBootsâ theory of socio-economic unfairnessâ.
âThe reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money,â wrote Pratchett. âTake boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of okay for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots thatâd still be keeping his feet dry in ten yearsâ time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.â
The Pratchett estate has authorised the use of the name, tweeting its own Pratchett quote in support of Monroeâs campaign. âSometimes itâs better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness,â wrote the late Discworld author in Men at Arms.
Rhianna Pratchett said: âMy father used his anger about inequality, classism, xenophobia and bigotry to help power the moral core of his work. One of his most famous lightning-rods for this was Commander Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch - a cynical, but likable, man who attempts to better himself whilst railing against the injustices around him. Some of which heâs had a hand in perpetrating in the past.
âVimesâs musing on how expensive it is to be poor via the cost of boots was a razor-sharp evaluation of socio-economic unfairness. And one thatâs all too pertinent today, where our most vulnerable so often bear the brunt of austerity measures and are cast adrift from protection and empathy. Whilst we donât have Vimes any more, we do have Jack and Dad would be proud to see his work used in such a way.â
This campaign came about because the current poverty index tends to look at mid-range luxury items, the price of which is often less affected by inflation, rather than the bottom-of-the-range necessities that the poorest in society actually rely on, and which have been massively hit by inflation.
Any plan for combating CSA is going to have to reckon with the fact that teenagers are often horny and feel a desire to explore and express their sexuality and if they donât have a safe avenue for that which doesnât involve interacting with adult predators they will find an unsafe one which does
This is not a hypothetical this is not a piece of rhetoric I was a horny teenager who had safe avenues for expressing my sexuality without the involvement of adult predators closed off to me and so I found the unsafe ones
+ if your conception of why CSA is wrong is in any way based on a notion of childhood innocence your actions and rhetoric are contributing to CSA, not fighting it.
The harm that is done to a child when they are sexually abused comes from the fact that they are being placed in a vulnerable situation with a pernicious power dynamic, not from the destruction of some illusory victorian notion of purity
Like idk itâs really fucked that for some people the rhetoric of âthat 15 year old seduced me, I wasnât the aggressor, Iâm not in the wrongâ is only wrong because they think 15 year olds are like constitutionally incapable of wanting to seduce someone when thatâs just like categorically incorrect, when I was 15 I very much actively desired to seduce people and even made attempts at doing it. The reason âthat 15 year old seduced me, I wasnât the aggressor, Iâm not in the wrongâ is wrong is because you as an adult have power over that 15 year old regardless of what they are or arenât trying to do and as such if they are trying to seduce you it is your responsibility to not take actions you know to be wrong. Itâs not wrong because itâs describing some kind of impossible desire that a 15 year old would never have, itâs wrong because itâs seeking to invert the power dynamics of the situation and place all the contextual agency on the minor while rhetorically disempowering the adult to project an image of innocence. Itâs just garden variety DARVO, not some kind of Metaphysically Incoherent Assertion.
Like idk I feel like it should be pretty easy to point out whatâs wrong with the logic of âthe child told me to commit rape so I didâ without inventing a rationale about how children are constitutionally incapable of formulating the idea of telling someone to commit rape
This absurd notion of childhood innocence serves only to put minors in more danger by denying the basic facts of how they experience and interact with the world while simultaneously functioning as a justification for depriving them of useful and necessary information that they could use to protect themselves from predators if they were allowed to have it. When you deny children information about how the world works with regards to sexuality, and deny yourself information about how children work with regards to sexuality, you are putting both yourself and children in a position of having to build a plan on faulty information and you shouldnât be surprised when the house you build this way crumbles under a stiff breeze.
