Every time I land into a string of the worst fucking luck I've ever had in my entire life, I think of a scene in my favorite movie, "NOPE", which sums up my feelings on it;
"What do you call a bad miracle?"
This. This is a bad miracle.
First was Ansel's disappearance after his suicide note. Then my roommate turned out to be a fucking sexual predator who had been lying and hiding this whole time (my roommate, who's been one of my best friends since I was 14). Then my aunt died suddenly from a heart attack. Then my great aunt died (thankfully surrounded by her loved ones except for my father, whose aunt is his, because he got a new fucking job and couldn't make it and cried for two hours without letting anyone but my mom know, who snitched on my sister and I because we love him and are worried that he didn't cry). Then the new job I was like, 90% sure I was about to get (within the game industry) vanished due to a change in management. Then my other great aunt died (leaving my great uncle alone and so sad that he's currently hospitalized). Then my roommates and I had a fight so hard that I'm wondering if everything I've ever built and worked for is even worth it. It's gotten so fucking bad that I just. I think I need to fucking move. And finally, once more, my prescription for testosterone didn't get renewed bc doctors are fucking idiots. So now I'm late on my shot and I'm a fucking mess.
I've spent a lot of money on moving around, trying to be there for my family and I'm out of everything. I don't even know if I can fucking pay rent, so. If any of you have read this long I guess, thank you? And if you wouldn't mind sharing? Because I'm at my wit's end.
If you'd like to help, I'd really appreciate it.

Facts about involuntary psychiatric hold:
The United Nations recognises it as a form of torture.
It increases suicide risk by 191 times.
It increases the risk of dying from heart disease and stroke by 3.5 times (no shit on that one, forcing extremely high doses of heavy drugs on someone without even titrating it does that)
45% of patients in psych wards have experienced sexual violence during an admission.
You are a shitty person if you try to get someone involuntarily committed.
Some links to back this stuff up, sorry if u posted ur own links op Iâll reblog those if u did
The UN Humans Rights Council report which includes discussions of how stripping the rights of people to accept or decline care erodes their dignity and personhood. Section V: Recommendations subsection 2 explicitly advocates for an end to involuntary hospitalization. This report also cites lots of other relevant data and is worth reading.
âDanger to Self and Othersâ a study that showed that in âcompliersâ (ie: people who are edge cases and are committed by some physicians but would not have been by others) rates of suicide and violent crime within three months of involuntary hospitalization rose significantly.
A comparative study that assesses a lot of other studiesâ conclusions about the harm of involuntary holds compared to voluntary holds. This one is dense but worth it to understand that this isnât an issue of data collection, the harm is visible in the aggregate
2023 study that found 45% of patients report being sexually assaulted in the psych ward. This study also notes that the numbers could be more, due to patient fears of reporting.
Hereâs an article I personally find fascinating on the odd legality of psych holds in the US (do the cops have the right to seize your stuff if they think youâre a danger? Why the fuck are cops being allowed to make these assessments? How the fuck is this legal? Should it be legal?)
Having a loved one going through a mental health crisis is a horrible feeling. And it can feel right to try to send them to a âprofessionalâ or call in a wellness check when you canât handle it or canât get to them physically. But it really canât be overstated: involuntary psych holds are proven to harm those who are struggling far more than they are proven to help.
If you are being involuntarily committed or fear you might be, you do still have rights and you are not subject to the same restrictions as if you were being arrested. The legal article I linked talks about it a bit for the US, and hereâs a document on it for California.
âall trans men innately have male privilege for identifying as men!â ok then whereâs my privilege. i am looking high and low and under all the furniture but i have found nary a trace of this mythical trans male privilege!
Sometimes I see a response to this sort of post that goes, âwell obviously you donât see it! Privileged people donât usually see their privilege, silly.â
Thatâs often true, that it takes a lot of outside perspective to be able to reflect on privileges you have. However, thatâs kinda also the thing, someone from the outside perspective should be able to actually point out concrete privileges which come about as a result of whatever that identity is that brings about privilege.
And when I ask, never once have I seen anyone manage to point out supposed transmasculine privilege which is actually an observed privilege I have. Theyâll give abstracts from feminist works like, âyour male sounding name will give you preferential treatment in early hiring stages,â which is a privilege people AMAB and who happen to continue to identify as men will receive from their parents, and not something that is an inherent privilege of being transmasculine. Thereâs a lot of legal hoops to jump through for most transmasculine individuals to have a male sounding name, itâs something he has to think deeply about and fight for. Thatâs not what privilege looks like.
Or, âcis men will treat you as one of the boys club and invite misogyny from you as bonding,â which is a privilege that not even all AMAB people who identify as men receive, just ask effeminate cis gay men. The odds of a trans man being accepted if itâs known heâs trans is low because of the transphobia and already rigid standards of what makes a real and good man. If a trans man is closeted, the situation in which he is surrounded by a bunch of cis men and is being invited to partake in misogyny is often one where the trans man is also fearing for his own safety in a way a cis man never would in that situation. Thatâs not what privilege looks like.
There are times that perfectly stealth trans men may end up benefitting from male privilege. That is not generalize-able enough to say that trans men have male privilege as a truism. The only way I would be willing to hear out the idea of trans men outright having male privilege is if trans men are specifically being privileged because they are trans men. And by and large, trans men, if itâs known theyâre trans men, are not awarded privileges.
This is true in the sense 90% of people attempting it have absolutely no business doing it, and end up acting in a way more consistent with the logic of the abuser than anything actually helpful.
Most people's instinctive knee jerk reactions to these situations actually just make shit worse. And people don't take the potential damage seriously enough when encouraging each other to take on this role.
Acting like you know someone's identity better than they do, their words can't be trusted, and they can't make their own decisions because they're doing it wrong - This is operating from the logic of the abuser. I don't care if you think you're right. If you think you've seen the same situation a million times. If you think you do know better and they would be happier listening to you. You are not helping, this is not how effectively helping people works.
You ALWAYS have to keep this in mind and make a concerted effort to act in ways consistent with logic that oposes abuse. This means: 1. Remembering and reinforcing autonomy 2. genuinely listening in an open, curious, compassionate manner 3. Treating them as someone who deserves to make their own decisions, and can be trusted to choose what's best, because they are the expert in their individual circumstances.
Of course you can share resources, mention options, talk about your own experiences, etc. While keeping all of those things in mind. The fact is most people don't, though, especially online and dealing with strangers. It's hard to let go of the desire for control, particularly when it's coming from a place of wanting to help.
If youâre not a trans woman you need to get way more comfortable with trans women talking about issues that donât affect you. If youâre not a trans man you need to be ok with trans men talking about their own experiences that donât affect you. If youâre not non binary you need to stop being weird about nonbinary people talking about the poor treatment they get for being nonbinary. If youâre not intersex you need to stop inserting yourself into conversations that arenât about you and begging to be centered. Everyone get less self centered NOW!!!!
The most PATHETIC lil baby sounds...
I love when little creatures who are entirely loved and well cared for have the BIGGEST baby reactions to normal things. Like yes sweet pea, you DO have the hardest life of anyone ever, for sure, and youâre SO BRAVE about this minor inconvenience of *checks notes* having some water touch you
There is nothing sadder and more pathetic than a baby marine mammal having to get into the water. They are suffering the most out of any baby animal ever. How dare they be introduced to their natural environment.
"I don't want you doing that, please. No, let's not. Let's no-I SAID STOP FUCKING TOUCHING ME, STEPHANIE."

Labubus are blind bags but they're also blind bags with some of the most insane dark patterns stacked on top. The online store for them has a thing where they tell you what you got the second you order it online so that you can immediately try again if you didn't get the thing you wanted.
There's also a shake feature that is designed to encourage you to buy more than one by narrowing down the possibility space on a crate of options so that if you're hunting a specific model you can verify that it's guaranteed to be in one of these three IF you buy all three right now!!!!!
You can read more about what dark patterns are and how to spot them here.
The original website about deceptive patterns (also known as âdark patternsâ) - tricks used in websites and apps that make you do things tha
That is a fucking awesome site everyone should visit. Don't skip the Hall of Shame.
I just thought of this post, which was actually how I learned what Dark Patterns are, because I tried to cancel my Adobe Acrobat subscription, and it took much longer than I anticipated because several times throughout the process it felt like it was intentionally trying to trick me into thinking I'd cancelled my subscription when I actually hadn't yet.
Please read up on Dark Patterns and learn how to recognize them.
The other day my wife told me about this influencer who said she needed to go on ozempic so she could go from 130 lbs down to 115 and I really cannot stress the degree to which we have so COMPLETELY lost the plot with this glp1 shit. Like not only are people are going on this shit for purely cosmetic purposes, the cosmetic purposes are delusional. This is the kind of mindset that gives people eating disorders but now because you can get a prescription instead of having to starve yourself or enduce vomiting a big swath of the general public seems eager to go along with it. Body Positivity did not go fucking far enough because I am being so real when I say that fatphobia is more of a public health crisis than obesity has ever been
People making a choice feminism argument for Ariana Grande looking skeletal have me feeling like this
The real antagonist of Fullmetal Alchemist is the nameless Xerxian alchemist who bought a teenage boy to sweep his floors and then was like "hey, I'm going to take your blood to try to play god, you can't legally say no because I own you. If this, say, backfires horrifically in 20 years time, then I guess it's you and your descendants' problem since it's your blood lmao"
a tag left by @paragonrobits on this post ages ago is still the most insightful comment on FMA's plot I've ever read
Any advice on how to de radicalize loved ones? Some previously left leaning close friends have started heavily engaging with right leaning content like joe rogan & especially jordan peterson. The effect is alarming. Lot of talk on how the worlds problem atm is the left going too far left and going back to identity politics and communist dictatorships. A variety of other shocking opinions on specific matters were expressed as well. They are getting brain rot, I am deeply concerned for them. How can I help them see this shit is fucked up without pushing them further towards it?
Weâre sad to say that questions like yours are becoming more and more frequent. Hereâs what we have for you: Advice we gave another anon who discovered a family member was running a fake-ass âantifaâ sock puppet account. Advice we gave an anon whose family are all anti-antifa cops! Advice we gave an anon whose parents were QAnon-brainwashed âantifa = terroristâ types. How one anon deradicalized their fiancĂŠ. Hope some of this helps; let us know how itâs going, ok?
Just got a new Roomba.
The last one (acquired sometime in 2012) finally died, so it was time for a replacement. The new model 105 is the cheapest one they make but by golly it's an upgrade in every conceivable way.
However.
The startup/unpacking procedure has changed. Where, before, you just charged the thing for 8 hours then turned it on... now you gotta configure it:
download the app
create an account & login
connect Roomba to the app/internet
use the app to configure Roomba
use the app to designate "forbidden" areas
use the app to schedule Roomba's start/stop times
Etcetera. Upon unboxing it I was >this< close to returning it, because nowhere was it stated on the web store that the app was REQUIRED to utilize the small floor cleaning robot.
But then I had an idea.
I set New Roomba down and pressed the Power button, without installing any apps or connecting it to wifi. And you know what?
IT STARTED CLEANING
It bumbled around the house mapping everything itself and did a marvelous job, without my having to do any of the recommended crap in the Quick Startup instructions. And without configuring its wifi there's no way it's sending data to iRobot's servers. Yayy.
In 2025 some things do just work right out of the box.
Can confirm my wireless enabled air filter does not require any Internet connection to work exactly like its non wireless predecessor. I tried connecting it once and it did not work as well as it did when I disabled the wireless connection. It was flashing a small "can't connect" light so I put tape over that light and it still all works fine.
My stove, dishwasher, and washing machine all have apps. "Install the app!" the manuals all say. "Get access to fancy cycles and features!" they all say.
I have installed exactly none of these apps, and have connected exactly zero of these appliances to the wifi.
They all work fine.
Like seriously 99% of my dishwasher cycles are "auto" and the remaining 1% are "express", neither of which I need an app for. Allegedly the app can tell me when the dishwasher needs more rinse aid but so does the little red light on the display. Which is handier than the app because the rinse aid lives in the cabinet next to the dishwasher and so when I see the little light I fill the rinse aid and am done, instead of an alert on my phone stressing me out everywhere and impinging on my brain.
The washer? 95% of what I was is cold water on the colors cycle. The rest is towels in hot water or delicates in cold water. Sometimes I get fancy and delay the towels an hour so it's not competing with the dishwasher or the shower for hot water. None of that needs the app. Allegedly the app can tell me when the washer is done but so can a timer I set to the wash time handily displayed when I start the washer, and that doesn't send any data to the manufacturer.
Honestly I don't even know what the stove app does because I can do fancy things like "turn the oven on in 3 hours" without it.
Yes, it is incredibly shitty that these all have apps now and that some features are app-only and that we are all pushed to give up more and more of our control and privacy in order to feed the gaping maw of corporate "profit". HOWEVER. Sometimes you can still just not.
And if you HAVE installed the app and connected the thing to the wifi, you can change your mind in most cases. Change your wifi password and uninstall the app. Sometimes for big appliances you can find instructions on how to physically remove the wifi module. If it literally won't turn on without a wifi connection, you can almost always make a separate network for it on your router that you then block from internet access.

No signing into an account. No downloading an app. Just plug it in and it does the thing it's supposed to do. /End ID]

A frustrating part of the mainstream vegan âlove all animals and protect the environmentâ mindset is the fact that things need to die in real-life ecology all the time but deer hunting season makes icky feelings and carp culls arenât cottagecore
The vegan âany animal death ever is morally wrongâ mindset doesnât hold up when:
We donât have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, theyâll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.
Itâs kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.
An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where theyâre an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.
I donât know how to end this except. Sometimes things just gotta die and acting otherwise just isnât a realistic expectation.
Highlights from the notes over the past 6 months include a lot of angry vegans saying âyouâre blowing things out of proportion, no vegans actually think like this!â and a lot of people who work in conservation and education saying âEvery day. I have to fight people who think like this.â
As a bonus this post was originally inspired by the vegan who called me racist for saying we should kill invasive species
The "all animal death is always morally wrong" attitude is also how you end up with the guys who say any predatory behaviour in nature is also morally wrong and we should work to put a stop to it. Like. Make it so lions aren't allowed to kill gazelles and such.
Ideas ranged from driving all predatory species to extinction (genius move. What could go wrong?) To animal shaped drones and artificial meat set ups. Truly a fascinating bunch. I wish I remembered what the subreddit was called lmao
