We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Bernard Cribbins. Known best to Doctor Who fans as the Doctor’s friend and Donna’s grandad Wilfred Mott, Bernard leaves behind a long legacy in film and TV. — Bernard Joseph Cribbins (29 December 1928 – 28 July 2022)

Thought process of announcers: why don’t we get another ball…?
OR MayBE WE SHOULD GET A CHEERLEADER! THEY’RE USED TO GOING UP HIGH
OH LOOK, THE CHEERLEADER HAS DONE IT
We also figured out—the hard way—that the ancients probably cut each layer of linen to the proper shape before gluing them together. For our first linothorax, we glued together 15 layers of linen to form a one centimeter-thick slab, and then tried to cut out the required shape. Large shears were defeated; bolt cutters failed. The only way we were ultimately able to cut the laminated linen slab was with an electric saw equipped with a blade for cutting metal. At least this confirmed our suspicion that linen armor would have been extremely tough. We also found out that linen stiffened with rabbit glue strikes dogs as in irresistibly tasty rabbit-flavored chew toy, and that our Labrador retriever should not be left alone with our research project.
I love this in every way possible. What is it from? Where can I read more?

I know it’s on purpose but still every dead choreographer is spinning in their grave
this is so brilliant but how many times did they just crash and send each other ass over teakettle during rehearsal
Audio processing disorder is just like "you are going to be able to differentiate 27 distinct sounds happening simultaneously EXCEPT for when someone's talking to you. Good luck"
People think because my ears are so unreasonably sensitive I must also be able to "hear" them. This is false. I can hear the clock ticking though
I can tell if the voices of the actors in whatever I’m watching have been added in later (adr, or additional dialogue recording) but without subtitles on I cannot fucking tell you what they’re actually saying
Perception : 10/10
Understanding: ?????/10
I don't even know how to feel about these
Unlike billionaires, pickpockets often recognize they have a lot in common with the potential victims of their crime.
This reminds me of Rhys Nicholson the comedian who got mugged and the mugger said "I promise this isn't a hate crime, my sister is a lesbian im pro gay rights"
the wildest part of the current event is that a lot of people are about to find out about shinzo abe's actual politics and that he's not just the funny haha "please have sex" meme man
on top off my head mr. abe:
covered up sexual assault allegations concerning his biographer
a right-wing elementary school with ties to nippon kaigi was going to be named after him (the school's imperialist curriculum teaches "alternative history" about WW2); it turned out that abe had helped them get their prime land in what was previously a public-owned area illegally
following this the abe government passed an anti-terrorism bill giving the police an alarming amount of new powers and drastically expanding the definition of "social media crime" as well as cracking down on whistleblowers (look up "criminal-conspiracy law")
had close ties with certain newspapers to the point you'd call them his mouthpieces, which ran smear campaigns against dissenters (yomiuri shinbun is a well-known one)
he and many members of his cabinet are/were members of nippon kaigi, which can loosely be defined as a shintoist-imperialist political cult
his party blames gay people for low birth rates and women in the workforce for stagnating wages, although abe himself liked to talk about "womenomics"
"taxes are wasted on gay people because they can't breed" - LDP member
spent his entire career pushing for abolition of japan's post-war pacifist constitution despite overwhelming public resistance
once again: death to marvel and disney
It should be emphasized that Marvel is far from the only company to do this shit. This is an industry-wide issue.
This documentary Life After Pi (go ahead and watch, it’s a half hour long) exposes how this was a rampant problem ten years ago as well. The movie follows Rhythm & Hues Studios, a successful VFX house that nonetheless went out of business due to the awful way Hollywood shortchanges VFX work. They were working on successful films with quality work and couldn’t stay in business. This studio collected an Oscar for their work on Life of Pi two weeks after declaring bankruptcy and when they tried to speak to the problem onstage their mic was cut. Nobody wanted to hear it. The movie cites 20 other VFX houses that went under the same way.
This article from 2022 explains how the VFX industry is fundamentally broken.
1993’s Jurassic Park had 63 VFX shots. In 1997, Starship Troopers made headlines for having almost 500. Today’s blockbusters routinely have over 2,000 VFX shots — and far less time to complete them.
“Jurassic Park was in postproduction for three years, with seven months for principal photography,” Perry says. “Now we have shows with thousands of VFX shots and they need to be done in six months.“
… Even though ideas change throughout production, the deadline rarely does. This leads to a major issue in the VFX industry known as scope creep.
“It’s not uncommon for vendors to work on shots for weeks or months, only to have those thrown out when a production changes their mind,” Rhythm & Hues founder Keith Goldfarb says. “When that happens, the production rarely accounts for money or time, they just expect the changes in half the time.”
They don’t get paid by the studio for the extra work or for the work that gets thrown out, but the VFX house has to pay their employees for the time. That leads to more money going out than there is coming in, and people working a lot of unpaid overtime to hit the deadlines. VFX artists burn out, companies go bankrupt, the studios make tons of money off these films that don’t get shared with the effects houses that made them or with the artists who put in the work.
When Ang Lee was asked about this, after Rhythm & Hues went under while making his movie, he complained that he wished digital effects were cheaper. That’s the general attitude of Hollywood in a nutshell.
Marvel is by far the worst offender, don’t get me wrong. They are absolutely awful about to their effects houses. But all the studios are doing this shit and have been for as long as digital effects have been in use. It’s across the board and has to be addressed that way.
