Eridian speculative biology time!

Erid is a very big planet, very very very big planet, twice the size of earth in fact- and divided by oceans, perfect conditions for populations to remain and develop separately and for long enough to create diferent species. So, unlike us, Eridians are a Polytypic genus: there's more than one species of sapient eridian, All of them sharing a common ancestor in the form of a small, 5 legged ambush-hunter land carnivore, all share common traits taking only slightly different evolutionary paths

Divers- get their name from living in semi-flooded caves, their high small vents allow them to be partially submerged without drowning and their long arms allow them to grip things easily underwater, similar to a sea-horse tail

Climbers- similarly, they get their name from their living enviroment, living in very high caves, their long thin arms allow them to grip and climb very steep rock walls, kinda like goats in a way

Drills and Stompers get their name from the shape of their arms, they both developed closer to the surface compared to the others, their arms are like that for dealing with sandstorms, while Drills "drill" themselfs in place, Stompers use their body weight to keep themselfs down

Blocks are very similar to Stompers, but they live in caves much deeper down, so they're quite compact

Common traits between all species: all Eridians can thrum, all Eridians organize in "colonies" like ants or termites (tho the specifics of how each colony works varies), all Eridians are True Carnivores(can only eat meat) and all Eridians are unisex

In theory any one eridian can procreate with any other eridian, between the 5 species there are 4 fertile hybrids and 3 infertile hybrids posible

note: tho each species has a more broad vague shared culture between themselves, none of them are a monolith, all of them have vastly different culture, language, texture, practices and even phenotypes between different colonies around the world

note 2: the fact humans are a monotypic species (there is only one in our genus) is really fucking weird to them

and then thinking about all the people who call her cold or uncaring or clinical about what she has to do to save earth. eva stratt, who had silly t-shirts and vodka and favorite meals stored in the Hail Mary and treated with the same level of importance as the finely tuned equipment and the centrifuge the entire planet relies on for salvation.

and then thinking about eva stratt nodding and saying, “yeah, I’m pretty awful. that’s why i’m in charge” with a neutral expression and even believing it. as if crafting the most beautiful coffin and homage to her soon-to-be dead friends won’t haunt her always.

thinking about eva stratt being the first person on the “eva stratt is a monster” train, welcoming ryland grace aboard and knowing she believed in him more than anyone else.

Canon: Bruce Wayne: Ambiguous European/Jewish (Ashkenazi)

His father's ethnicity is very vague, but it assumed to be European or Anglo-Saxon. I put ambiguous for his as we truly don't know. His mother is Jewish. (See below)

Canon: Dick Grayson: Ambiguous/Romani

John Grayson is mixed and pretty inconsistent. John's paternal grandparents were Caucasian, however, his maternal side is unknown/ambiguous. In past comics, John was portrayed as Romani. The only retcon was his paternal grandfather being William Cobb (Dick's great-grandfather). Therefore, John Grayson can be considered Ambiguous/Romani assuming his maternal side is Roma. Dick's dad also canonically speaks Romani. Mary Grayson is French Romani (Romani born and raised in France). Dick was raised with the culture and language. Please note, the way the Romani culture is portrayed in the comics is very stereotypical. When writing about the Romani culture in fanfics, I highly encourage you to research the culture (actual case studies, interviews with Romani people and well-respected sources, wiki is not enough)

Jason Todd: (canon) Ambiguous European; (popular fandom headcanon) Hispanic

As of right now, Jason is considered canonically ambiguous European. His grandmother, Ma Gun, is from Australia which is basically all we know.

Many fans love to headcanon Jason as Hispanic/Latino. Not sure why, but please be aware of any potential stereotypes. Personally, I love Hispanic/Latino Jason. However, sometimes, I get worried that fans headcanon Jason as Hispanic due to his background (homeless, street kid, drug addict mother, abusive/criminal father), making the headcanon kind of racist. (Soy Boricua pa' que tu lo sepas, don't come for me) Headcanons are fine as long as there is no racial stereotype attached.

Tim Drake: (canon) Ambigous/Caucasian; (popular fandom headcanon) Asian

Like Jason, considered canonically white. AND like Jason again, be careful with stereotypes. I'm not sure where the Asian headcanon came from, but again, I worry it's because Tim is smart and well-off, which are racial stereotypes of Asian-Americans.

Cassandra Cain: (canon) Chinese/ambiguous European

Her mother, Lady Shiva, is of Chinese ancestry. Her father, David Cain, is considered canonically white, ancestry some where in Europe.

Damian Wayne: (canon) Ambigous European/Jewish/Chinese/Middle Eastern/Arabic; (popular fandom headcanon) Jewish/Arabic

Damian is canonically very mixed. His father is Bruce, making him Jewish and European. His mother, Talia, is Chinese/Middle Eastern. This is where it gets a bit tricky. Ra's al Ghul's backstory has been inconsistent over the years. He was born and raised in an eastern North African nomadic tribe, but also had some Byzatine Roman ancestry at one point. However, his father, Sensei, is Chinese. His mother, Mother Soul/Rúh al Ghul, is assumed to be Middle Eastern/Arabic. Talia's mother, Melisande, is assumed to be Arabic/Chinese.

As for the fandom headcanon, I'm not sure how many fans were actually aware of how ethnically mixed Damian is.

Canonically, the League of Assasins have their own dialect, but it has Arabic influence. In the Gotham Knights game (2022), it was close to Berber (Tamazight), North African languages spoken by indigenous groups.

Duke Thomas: African-American/Unknown

His mother, Elaine Thomas, is African-American. His biological father's , Gnomon, ethnicity is completely unknown. He is said to be over 1,000 years old and is immortal.

It’s not like Tim has actually done anything explicitly wrong in canon, aside from some racism that was the fault of horrible writers, and not in character. Having a whole blog dedicated to drawing him getting murdered in various ways is.. seriously disgusting. If it was about Jason Todd, people would freak out. But it’s totally fine because….. Why? Why is this normal to us?
