right! *claps hands* iâve been on ao3 for about 5 years and i have absolutely no idea how to code diffrent skins. does anyone have any advice/masterpost/tutorial on how to get started??
well if you just want to change the colour, you could use the built-in skin wizard. (how to get there: ao3 -> dashboard -> skins -> create site skin -> use wizard) it lets you make a basic site skin and you can change the font, colours, and a few other things, and doesn't require any programming knowledge.
it's a bit more complicated if you want to actually code a skin. the way i learnt it was copy pasting random site skins from tumblr, messing with the code to see what each part does, and googling whenever i didn't know something (this method actually works pretty well! i made my first skin in an afternoon, and i was pretty happy with it :D)
if you'd like a masterpost/tutorial for making ao3 site skins, i heard that this one is pretty good. you'd also probably want a tutorial for CSS (that's the programming language that you use to make a skin). i like this one by w3schools, but you can easily find many others through a google search.
i hope this helps!
this was so helpful thank you so much!!!

outfreaking other people is fun and all, but have you ever outfreaked yourself? have you ever been sitting there and suddenly had a thought so nasty youâre like damn somebody should lock me up?

an older lady next to me on the 7am train this morning was reading hardcore smut in size 100 font.
Iâve seen my future and she is thriving.
Trust me, they do. For many of them itâs kind of like a heist. I know of a few who set up whole personas to get into every goddamn corner, discord servers, an actual ao3 account, you name it. You have no idea how fascinating it is to them but simultaneously so petrifying. Donât freak out, a lot of them donât give a fuck. Majority, actually. Right after they go look once to kill their curiosity. But all of this only really happens when their media or advertising is really tied into this culture, ie: âwillmackâ being used frequently in main posts by the sharks to refer to Will and Mack. One google and plane hits the second tower, when it would usually be far more difficult. This also happens if said person is young enough to be a part of the beautiful internet, this type of culture is kind of hard to avoid no matter how much anyone hides this. Itâs astonishing that all of you think youâre a small chunk of fan base that can be ignored. Absolutely not. Youâre all at least a third of whatever stat weâre going by here. Fan culture is also the 60 year old fathers who scream at the TV when his favorite team scores, etc etc etc. Youâre what I call âthe fandomâ and the fathers (,etc etc etc, all the smaller fan culture phenotypes that contribute less but still have their defined lines) are the âfans,â I know fandom is technically both, but only the people who know the word fandom are apart of âthe fandom,â if you know what I mean. You have to be well educated in this particular sub genre of culture to know that the word fandom exists. Then, when you think about this, not many âfansâ post on the internet, do they? But oh boy does the fandom, thatâs basically all it is. Thereâs no escaping, the famous ones are always condemned to it if theyâre chronically online like 99% of the population. Usually have to be, because itâs a critical part of marketing to be modern, and modern is tied in a bow on their phone.
No because youâre so right, and I really shouldâve been more specificâI was talking about that deeply online, AO3-lurking, trope-fluent little slice of fandom. The ones who will write 40k based on one slightly-too-long look. Not the full range of fans, just the unhinged gremlins (said with love) I orbit.
What I was mostly wondering about is how much the players actually know vs how much their media teams do. Like, I have zero doubt Max Verstappenâs PR team is well-versed in Lestappen and has a whole strategy doc somewhere. But Max himself? I fully believe someone once told him âmaybe donât Google thatâ and he just nodded and never thought about it again. Meanwhile, some of these guys are probably ten pages deep on AO3 in private. I find that whole unknown so weirdly fascinating.
And honestly, you put it perfectlyâthereâs no separating fandom culture from modern visibility anymore. Itâs loud, itâs everywhere, and the fourth wall is basically vibes now.
Thank you for such a thoughtful ask anonâit really made me think!! đ
