1. The Sacrificial Death. The character dies so someone else can live—or so something worse won’t happen. Why it works: It reframes their entire arc as purposeful.

2. The Meaningless Death. Sudden. Unfair. Often random. Why it works: It shocks the reader and reinforces the cruelty of the world.

3. The Redemption Death. A morally flawed character dies doing the right thing—often too late to save themselves. Why it works: It gives closure without erasing past sins.

4. The Slow Fade. A drawn-out death caused by illness, injury, or exhaustion. Why it works: It forces characters (and readers) to sit with inevitability.

5. The Unwitnessed Death. The character dies alone, off-page, or without immediate acknowledgment. Why it works: The emotional weight hits later—often harder.

6. The Choice Death. The character knowingly chooses death over another option. Why it works: It’s agency at its most tragic.

7. The Betrayal Death. Killed by someone they trusted. Why it works: It reshapes relationships and poisons future trust.

8. The Legacy Death. The character’s death changes the world—laws, beliefs, movements, or myths. Why it works: The character lives on through consequence.

9. The Almost-Survived Death. They make it so close—help arrives too late, the cure works too slowly. Why it works: It devastates because hope was within reach.

10. The Necessary Death. The story cannot move forward unless this character dies. Why it works: It feels inevitable in hindsight—even if it hurts.

Trust is built slowly over time. It's rarely given immediately and instead is revealed in the smallest vulnerabilities, the quietest choices, the moments where a character lets their guard down without realising it.

I've outlined some ways you can prove to your reader the trust your characters build together.

Sharing secrets they don’t tell anyone else.

Letting someone see their vulnerable side: emotional, disheveled, or undone.

Falling asleep around them without worry.

Admitting confusion instead of pretending to know everything.

Asking for help, especially when they never do.

Walking beside them instead of behind or ahead.

Allowing silence without trying to fill it.

Letting them read unfinished drafts, art, or work-in-progress ideas.

Showing up at their door in a moment of panic.

Not hiding their flaws or insecurities.

Giving them the spare key without overthinking it.

Delegating an important task without hesitation.

Relaxing their shoulders when that person arrives.

Sharing food straight from the same plate or drink.

Telling the truth, even when it’s messy or uncomfortable.

Revealing old scars: physical or emotional.

Accepting advice they’d reject from anyone else.

Allowing touch without stiffening.

Letting that character enter their space.

Looking at them like they’re a place, not a person. A safe place.

Showing vulnerability is risky: it's weakness, it's fear, it's revealing one's flaws.

Showing vulnerability is a core part of driving the plot or character development, whether they're building relationships or force them to make choices they wouldn't normally do.

Exposing your character's doubts and insecurities shows the reader that your character is real and has depth.

Here are 20 ways you can create tension by showing vulnerability in your characters through actions:

Letting someone see them exhausted instead of pretending they’re fine.

Admitting they don’t know what they’re doing and not joking about it.

Whispering secrets to objects instead of people.

Holding back tears, not because they’re strong, but because they’re scared.

Accepting help and apologizing for it at the same time.

Taking a deep breath before speaking, as if bracing for impact.

Sitting closer than necessary, then freezing when noticed.

Saying “you don’t have to” when they desperately want them to stay.

Letting their voice crack.

Sharing something small first, testing the ground. Alternatively, sharing small joys to test if it's safe to share bigger ones.

Watching the other person’s reaction instead of finishing the sentence.

Fidgeting with sleeves, rings, or scars they usually hide.

Letting silence stretch instead of filling it with humour.

Admitting they were hurt without assigning blame.

Avoiding eye contact while speaking about something personal.

Trusting someone with a truth they don’t fully understand yet.

Hesitating before touching, afraid of rejection. Their hands hang in the air for a moment as if waiting for permission.

Saying “I don’t want to be alone” instead of “I’m fine.”

Letting someone touch them in a way they usually resist.

PLAYFUL: lighthearted teasing & banter, exaggerated reaction, poking fun at behaviours, playful shoves, feigned offense, "Oh, you think you're funny, do you?"

SUGGESTIVE: straightforward, complimenting looks, casual physical touch, dirty jokes, expressing desire, "We could always sneak out somewhere quieter."

ROMANTIC: head over heals, thoughtful gestures, blushing, classically romantic gestures (holding doors, holding an umbrella, bringing coffee in the morning), "My soul knows yours from another lifetime and calls for yours in this one too."

ANXIOUS: freaking out over every text and interaction, discussing every move with their friends,

BOLD: direct, no subtly, relationships always labelled, "I've really liked being around you. Could I maybe take you on a date sometime?"

SHY: nervous, insecure, showing no interest until they are sure the other is interested, fidgeting, daydreaming about what could be if they had the courage to confess, using excuses to be close to them, "Um... you look really good today."

CARETAKING: acts of service, protectiveness, checking in, bringing snacks, offering jacket, fixing things, walking them home, "Brought you coffee; it's still warm."

CASUAL & INTENSE: platonic flirting with no further intentions, way over the top at times, effortless, fun, teasing, maybe eventually leading to more, "You look great, please break my back and reshape my inner organs."

“I'm not jealous! I just… It just bothers me that… Holy shit. I'm jealous.”

“Why do I even care? It's not my life!”

“Oh.” Oh.

“Fuck. That wasn't part of the plan.”

“I never meant to develop feelings, but… I think I did.”

“You're like a virus I can't get rid off, and I think lately the infection has reached my heart.”

“Oh, I'm an idiot.”

“You make me happy like no one else. I'm not sure what exactly that means yet, but… I know it means something.”

“I care, that's all. We're friends; friends care. That's all this is…”

“We're more than just friends, aren't we?”

“I think… Maybe, I knew all along, and was just too afraid to admit it to myself.”

“This was never just friendship.”

“I can't keep pretending anymore.”

“How much longer can I tell myself this isn't what it looks like to everyone else?”

5. Walk with your keys in your hands and keep a key between each finger

E.g.

If your gut is telling you to cross the street or change your path, do it. Don’t risk it. Your body knows.

If you can, buy a large umbrella and walk holding it. Studies say that predators are less likely to attempt an attack on someone that could fight back. Keys around your knuckles is fine but you’ll need to get very close to do damage. Umbrellas are more precise.

Avoid wearing headphones if you are alone on an empty street. Look aware.

Again: Stay. Away. From. Walls.

Entering an uber alone? Call your father (or anyone you trust) and say “hey dad! Yep, I’m almost there, I’m sending you the route.” outloud. Then proceed to send them the route so they can follow the uber drive. This will most likely intimidate the predator.

If you see someone in an uncomfortable or possibly dangerous situation, walk up to them and say “Betty, oh my god, I haven’t seen you in so long!”. If she gets slightly confused, you can whisper and let her know you’re trying to help and that she should follow along. Walk together to another station or away from where you are. The man will most likely not follow. I have done this one 2 times and can be very helpful.

If you are unsure she needs help, you can pass her a note saying something like “hey, I noticed this man beside you is making you uncomfortable. If you’d like help, fake a sneeze right now and I will come up to you and pretend we are friends.” This is a long note, but its an example. Be discrete. If she follows along, proceed with the previous tip. This is helpful when you’re in a crowded train and you notice harassment.

-if a man is groping you against your will, go for the balls. always go for the balls. It’ll 1) hurt like hell, and 2) shock him to the point where you can probably run away and get help.

1: if you’re reading a book with a large number of pages, you know, those BIG ONES, or with the hard cover, don’t leave it at home and never bring outside. I’m not saying to bring it everywhere, but if you are going to any possible dangerous places alone, bring them, in a purse or even by hand (to show it to everyone). Believe me, if you hit someone with it, it will hurt them!!

3: if your being attacked, and you don’t have any pointed objects, neither training, put your fingers on the predators eyes and press it. With all your strength, it will leave them blind or disabled. Use it only if your life is in risk!

My biggest piece of advice is to have someone u can text or call immediately, who u can pretend is a parent or smth similar, and find the ppl in the area that’ll help

It’s not super common, but plenty of local places I’ve been to have signs in the bathrooms that tell u wat to do/“order” if ur in danger

One person is at a higher level of fighting than the other (person A - Akaza, Jabber)

Other person (person B - Rengoku, Zanka) is using person A to train in order to get better

person A's motive is to get person B to the utmost potential so they can duel and B can kill A

A is... weird. And freaky. And weirdly freaky. Specifically about fighting B

A and B are part of rival organisations; A is part of the bad one, B is part of the good one

A doesn't really care about being part of their organisation and in some AUs defects to the good organisation to be with B

B loves being in the good organisation and often is scared that the good organisation will kick them out of they are revealed to be with A

A fully embraces their feelings for B despite the risks, while B tries to hide/ignore their feelings for as long as possible

📕 1. Journal with Witch

(AKA: Ikoku Nikki)

A beautiful, emotional drama about grief and the standout of the season, Journal with Witch follows Asa, a 15-year-old girl, and her estranged aunt Makio as they learn to become a family after the former is suddenly orphaned. Picking up the pieces of their shared trauma at the hands of their emotionally abusive and now-deceased mother/sister, Makio tries to give her young niece a safe place to explore her feelings in this new era of her life.

Absolutely gut-wrenching, with characters that feel all too real, writing that sticks with you for weeks after you've seen an episode, beautifully directed. It's incredibly rare that a non-romance-focused josei work gets an anime, and this is the best one I've ever seen. Can't recommend it enough if you wanna cry!
