Jacob stared at the tiny tree in the lightbulb. He marveled at how such a thing could exist, even though he just created it. Jacob lit a cigarette and took a long drag. He relished every moment of the forbidden fruit. He felt ecstasy in the act of teenage rebellion. That was until his phone rung. âDinner is almost ready, sweetie.â âIâm busy.â âIâm okay if youâre getting food with your friends, but if not you have to come home.â âI have no friends, Mom.â âDonât give me that again, of course you do. Mark? Sydney?â âTraitors. Asshats.â âJacob!â âThatâs what they are.â âJust because theyâre dating it does not mean theyâre not your friends. Neither does it mean you can use that language.â âThey obviously donât want me around.â âJacob, theyâjustâjust come home. Weâll talk about this after dinner.â âIâm notââ She hung up. âHungry.â Jacob took a deep breath and tossed his phone aside before taking another drag. âWhat does she know?â Jacob said, âShe doesnât have to deal with this. All her friends are married.â Jacob finished and flicked the cigarette butt away without even extinguishing it. The lightbulb lit up when the cigarette remains bounced off of it. Jacob didnât react until he was about to light a second; he jumped back, standing up immediately and letting the cigarette drop from his lips. âWhat theâŚ?â Jacob began to inspect the anomaly but the lightbulb flickered out. âWait, wait, no. Come back. Light up again.â Tapping and flicking resulted in nothing. Neither did his insistent commands work. He them switched to his pack of cigarettes. âTheyâre not laced, Jacob. You just bought the pack.â Jacob spun around to see a kid about his age behind him. âWho are you?â âCall me whatever you want: conscience, guardian angel, inner voice, that gut feeling.â Jacob gave a dumb, confused look and the boy chuckled. He strolled over to the lightbulb and gave it a tap with his foot. It lit up. Jacobâs face contorted even more and the boy laughed again. âCome with me. Let me help youâ . . . #picturestory #flashfiction #writersofinstagram #aspiringauthor #creativewriting #creativity #writing #writer #angst #conscience #lightbulb #cigarette #rebellion ##tree #tinytree https://www.instagram.com/p/BvCDgnjHqzG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d3mblp7hxus7
