As much as I love the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, I will never stop being mad at how undeserving and unsatisfying Elizabeth's ending is.
She, who sought the sea and adventure and a pirate's life literally since the opening scene of the first movie, got to be KING OF THE PIRATES and then... got shoved aside to be a stay at home single mom while her husband gets to go be an immortal pirate captain.
It's stupid, she deserves better than that and there is no narrative reason for her not to get a more befitting ending.
The third movie should have ended with Will and Elizabeth on the Flying Dutchman together. Pirates, side by side. That would have been deserved, rewarding, satisfying.
And nothing in the lore makes it so this couldn't happen!
Don't tell me it's because the crew 'has to be dead'. No, they don't. Will joined the crew very much still alive the first time around. So Elizabeth could have also just joined the crew.
And don't say it's because Will was a soul owed, paid in debt for Jack. Clearly, Will now controls the rules of the game, considering he set his dad free - but his dad decided to stick around on the ship. So, if he can end a debt owed, he could as well simply declare someone a crew member.
Elizabeth Swann deserved to end her journey as a pirate, not as an abandoned single mom.
It's not even that she had anything to return to. Their home was seized, her father is dead, she is pregnant and all alone, without money to fall back onto, without support or family, without a husband. Sure, she married Will on the ship, but it's not like she got a marriage certificate, a ring or a damn husband to show for it.
No. No, that really wasn't the ending to her journey that she deserved. To stay home, raise the kid and wait like a good little wife for her husband to come home from his adventures.
