Ageism is not giving a 50 year old a job because they're not down with the kids. Ageism is not "I don't want to vote for a 75-year-old who served in one of the most cancer-causing wars of modern times." People decline as they age. That is a fact. The aging population deserve care and dignity, but they do not deserve to hoard political power well beyond retirement age. There's a reason that retirement exists even in a society where people are so often only valuable in so much as they labor. Living with two people over 70 just gives me an even more negative view of having retirees representing me. And in a world where all these folks have most certainly had multiple brain-damaging COVID infections that excelerate aging? I'm allowed to doubt whether they're fit to represent people. For fuck's sake, we had to watch Dianne Feinstein slowly wither away then have her seat get filled with someone we didn't vote for, not that I don't absolutely loathe Adam Schiff who the assholes of Carceralfornia saw fit to elect. Not that Dianne Fienstienn was any beacon of decency and progress even before she was elderly.
Maybe I'm letting my life bias get in the way. Not only have I been watching two Boomers decline, but at 19 I was being a tortured by an arrogant retiree who wanted a "fun little job" and thought he knew better than his training, and certainly more than a 19-year-old girl. But again, there's a reason retirement is the status quo even under capitalism. I guess I just have to shut up because the Bay Area is basically a retirement community atp because the people who can afford to live here are the people who bought houses decades ago. The 70 year old have little idea they're losing their faculties, so of course they want their peers to represent them. Yet their peers won't admit that aging means imminent disability, and they're not doing anything to help a more and more disabled population. The famously large generation aging needs people who want to fight for disability, and I almost never see the Boomer politicians doing that. My mom could certainly tell you a lot of ways that the disabled population are failed as she constantly struggles with things like limited parking when lugging my dad around, but Boomers were also not raised to demand anything of their politicians. There were the hippies demanding to end the war, and that kind of stopped there from what I see. Put up a little sign that says, "No kings," but demanding that your own politicians on your blue team actually serve their consistituents? No way.
Idk if my parents voted for the 75-year-old in the most conservative caucus of Democrats in the House, but I certainly don't hear them discuss how the man takes money from the power company as the bills skyrocket. Using your money to make worse policy for you! They're laughing in our faces!
