Intro Post :D

Hi, my name is Grace!! Here’s what you need to know about me:

I am nonbinary and use they/them pronouns and I am 19 years old. I am queer. I am disabled in multiple ways. I have several chronic illnesses which are the autoimmune disease ankylosing spondylitis and hypermobility spectrum disorder (being investigated for hEDS). I also have suspected mecfs which I am still in the process of going to doctors to investigate. I am also neurodivergent with diagnosed Tourette Syndrome and an unofficial autism diagnosis from my psychologist (still working on getting it official). There are more but those are the ones I feel comfortable naming. I also have a host of mental illnesses that I won’t list here but talk about sometimes. I am a part-time wheelchair user and crutches user.

This blog is mostly chronic illness and disability stuff. Maybe some mental health related stuff too. I try to be positive but I do post a lot of vent content to do with my struggles with chronic illness. Some of the fandoms I like are x-men, twilight, arcane, as well as many others. I am very artistic and I love to do ceramics, sewing, and crocheting.

I don’t have a dni, I’ll just block people that I don’t want interacting with me. I do swear on this blog so if that makes you uncomfortable feel free to block. I don’t talk about anything sexual on this page and if I decided to I’d tag it appropriately. I also put alt text on any photos I post and I try to only reblog images with alt texts or image descriptions. If there isn’t one I’ll add one or tag it undescribed.

I think the worst part of my recent rheumatologist appointment was when we were going through the hEDS criteria and when we got to the soft velvety skin part I held out my arm to feel my skin texture but she just looked at my arm (which has a lot of healed scars on it) and said “Yeah you cut yourself so?”

When I’m having a good day chronic illness wise I feel like I’m an academic weapon and that I can do all the classes I want and do any job I want to do and that as long as I maintain a good schedule and pace myself just right it’ll be fine.

And then when I’m not doing well I feel like I should just give up on my dreams right now and start applying for disability because there’s no way I’ll be able to work.

Of course there are other options which are more moderate like taking a reduced course load and then trying to find a remote job but I’m autistic and tend to think in extremes so those thoughts don’t tend to prevail over all the other stuff swirling through my brain chambers.

the most satisfying skill you can learn as a visibly disabled person (especially a YOUNG visibly disabled person) is to stare right the fuck back. I know it’s scary because people are judgy af and you want to avoid the attention but I PROMISE YOU. people are awkward as hell when they get caught. it is SO worth it to watch a man who’s like a foot taller than me, at least ten years older, and really buff, duck his head and look away because I refused to break eye contact first.

I feel bad when I act irritably towards people I care about when talking about me being sick. My parents always try to come up with ideas to my things easier that won’t work and/or I’ve already thought of. They can’t do anything to actually change it though.

I think I just get frustrated because I feel like I’m trying to express how miserable I am and they just tell me how good of a job I’m doing and to “keep striving” but I feel like I’m barely making anything work. I guess I just want them to say that it’s okay to do less. But what less even is there? My life basically consists of two things: school and trying to maintain a social life. If I stopped talking to my friends I would be feel terrible and I can’t exactly stop school because then I would just be an unemployed 19 year old with no goals sucking away at my parents money. Bleh

I feel like middle aged people are rage baiting me constantly with their “once you get to my age” crap or I say some thing about being tired and they say “you don’t even know how bad it gets, story of my life.”

It seems like once people turn 35 some switch gets hit in their brains making them incapable of comprehending that young people can feel pain or fatigue.

I’m not walking around shouting out my health issues, but I feel like regardless of if someone has health issues why can’t we just. Believe them. When they say they are suffering. Without invalidating them. It’s not that freaking hard! Disability and chronic illness does not care how old you are!

Whenever something like this happens I wanna say something like “Actually I’m not just a bit tired. I’m experiencing debilitating chronic fatigue due to my body expending energy to make my immune system constantly attack the joints in my spine causing it to slowly fuse together over time :D” But that’s kinda a lot so I just kinda awkwardly chuckle and move on.

I try to surround myself with whimsy in order to make being disabled and tired and in pain suck less but sometimes it just. sucks. no matter how much you try to romanticize your life.

Sometimes you are just stuck in bed in a messy room, surrounded by trash you couldn’t sit up to throw away, dishes piled on the floor by the bed. Your body aches but you’re too tired to get up to get a hot pack or some pain meds. Not to mention you’ve needed to use the bathroom and have for hours but no one is home to help you get up so you just have to wait. And you’re dehydrated but ran out of water by your bed. But you can’t get up. So you just lay there and it’s not whimsical at all.

I never considered myself a very athletic person even before I became physically disabled so when I did become physically disabled the fact that participating in sports was no longer an option never really bothered me. Until now. My dad likes to watch sport climbing, specifically bouldering, and lately I’ve gotten in to watching it on my own and watching people who boulder for fun on TikTok. I want to try it so bad. And I could technically try it. But it’s kind of difficult when most mornings it takes me an hour to get out of bed, just to go right back to bed. And that I can’t go out somewhere that requires walking or standing for more that 45 minutes without my wheelchair. If I really wanted to I could try it. But I know I should probably prioritize spending my limited energy on more essential things.

Sooo….i said fuck it and decided to try bouldering anyway. Only went for an hour with my boyfriend but I am so exhausted. Will check back in in 1-3 days to see how fucked I am.

Also not great that I am terrified of going places I haven’t been before so I was freaking out all morning with anxiety and then when we were leaving I had a slightly awkward interaction with the front desk lady that most people wouldn’t bat an eye at but because of the tism it caused me to freak out further so when we got to the car I burst into tears and uncontrollably sobbed for ten minutes…..yeah

The actual bouldering was fun though although incredibly hard and painful on my hands.
