“I have to teach the book.” He said. “You have to read it and I have to give a test on it to make sure you know what’s in it.”

“Okay,” we said. “This is what school is.”

He also said “but I don’t have any rules that say I can’t teach you more than one book.”

“But this isn’t English class,” we complained.

“No it’s not,” he replied as he handed out photocopies of a different book I do not have the name of. I would learn later that he paid for the photocopies himself, because he could not afford to buy a set of books for us, and the school wouldn’t help. We had to turn in the photocopies at the end of the lesson. He’d done this for years, and the packets of paper were sets of folders containing well read photocopies and some pages were crumbly and he’d replace whole packets or pages in a single packet at a time. He had a whole cabinet full of these folders, broke down by chapter, out of a different book. Some of the packets included photocopies from more than one book, some news articles, a couple academic papers. We were not always required to read those, but we were promised extra credit if we did.

“Write me an essay,” he’d say.

“Ugh,” we groaned. “What about?”

“The differences between what’s in the packet and what’s in your books.”

And we would. He’d accept full essays and he’d accept a simple list of differences, but that was always an assignment. Point out the differences.

“Which fact do you believe?” He would ask us.

“The packet,” we’d answer.

“Why?” He’d ask.

“Because they don’t want us to have them,” we’d answer.

“Good,” he’s smile. “With this chapter, I’m not going to give you a packet. I want you to make your own packet based on the information in this chapter in your government supplied textbook.”

“Ugh,” we groaned.

But we learned how to do some simple research, and we were told that Wikipedia could be edited by anyone, but everyone that edited had to present sources. We had to come up with twenty pages worth of extra information on the chapter in our textbook. The textbook’s chapter was something like ten pages long. We had to do our essay/lists on what was left out/added/changed. It was a good two week long project.

“Why am I making you do this?”

“Because it’s busy work,” someone answered.

He frowned. “Because one day you’ll be presented something as fact and you’ll have to decide if it is fact or not.”

“How do we know the difference?”

“Maybe one day one of you will grow up and be able to give a simple answer to that question because I don’t have that answer.”

“You just didn’t want to do the work to make a packet yourself, huh?”

He smiled. “That is an advantage to having minions.”

However, the vampire voice was real. He was a character named Count Vlad who knew history because “he lived through it first hand.” He came out every time we watched a movie in that class, which we did often. We were way too old for this sort of teaching. We knew it. He knew it. He didn’t care. Count Vlad critiqued movies based on historical events with how accurate or false they were for the sake of selling movie tickets.

Well, in fairness, I was raised by lawyers. So "lawyer" to me has never meant the sort of sleek professional you see on TV, it's always been my dad the dork and my very sweet mom. So I never really had the cognitive dissonance of trying to wedge my art-major self into the lawyer cutout.

That being said, I've always felt that I can choose to only show an aspect of myself without being...untrue to the whole. There is a part of me that is capable and comfortable in the position of the controlled, knowledgeable professional, and I can be that self all day at the office and not feel like I'm betraying the part of myself that wants to paint my whole house black and hang skulls on the walls. I don't have to show the whole of myself to every person I meet, nor do I want to.

But I chose to work in a very public-facing area of law. One of my best friends is also a lawyer, and she came out of law school and said, No, I will not change my neon hair, I will not hide my collection of action figures visible in the background of my Zoom calls, I do not want to have to customer-service-voice an angry client. And so she went into federal law, in an area where she almost never goes to court and her only client is the government. All of her coworkers are fine with the level of weird she operates at, because she's excellent at her job.

I would rather have the pocket card that is "this person is what I expect to see when I picture a lawyer and therefore I expect her to be able to do lawyer things and speak with the authority of a lawyer," than I would have to establish my competency because I don't look like people expect me to, or to give the strangers I deal with on a regular basis insight into who I am. My coworkers know me well enough to see past the "basic lawyer" front, but most everyone else? not so much. And I like it that way.

Here's something true in nearly any field: you can be as weird as you want to be as long as you're good at your job. You may decide that seeming to fit the lawyer mold is advantageous to you later, or you may decide that you hate that and you want to wear yellow converse to work every day. But all of that is only surface level. You will still be yourself. Law is just a job; it doesn't have to be who you are.

Simone Biles is a wonder, and I trust & support her to make the best decisions regarding her health. If that means stepping down from competition, then all the more power to her.

There is currently a strike at Frito-Lay. in Topeka. These workers are striking because:

They were being forced to work 84 hour weeks. The company's best offer so far is a 60 hour cap. This is shit we fought for a century ago, people.

Their generous offer also includes a whole 4 percent wage increase...over the next 2 years. I'm not sure what COL is in Topeka, but... Well, it's better than the entire 77 cents they've apparently gotten in the last decade.

There's also a report that a worker literally collapsed and dropped dead on the line and the foreman's response was to make them move the body out of the way and put in a replacement. (However, this is unconfirmed and, of course, the company denies it).

There have been multiple OSHA violations at this plant over the last few years, including a forklift accident that's under investigation.

They've now been striking since July 5 but, of course, it only hit the national media yesterday.

So, why am I signal boosting this?

Because Frito-Lay is refusing to budge. They are attempting to make the excuse that union leadership agreed to the 60 hour work week and crappy pay cut...when union leadership only agreed to put it to a vote.

And this means that we need to put the thumbscrews on them. Remember, this is about 19th century style working conditions.

So, I'm calling on my followers to boycott Frito Lay's until the strike is involved.

OH MAN SEE SEE SEE i wish we knew so much more about how bull elephants interact with herds and families - we've documented bull elephants traveling to matriarchal herds and fake wrestling with male calves, and we've documented bulls protecting orphaned calves, but in god's name i want every in and out about it. everything we know about elephant social interaction is not enough. it's a Thing that introducing old bulls to a population lowers the amount of younger bulls in musth, also known as the state in which bull elephants desire nothing but murder and possibly sex, but - i want to know the precise mechanisms. old bull elephants teaching younger bulls manners renders me VERKLEMPT. i just wanna know every secret elephants have.

This is better documented in African Elephants than asian ones because they're easier for elephant biologists to observe by the means of 'sitting on top of a jeep and taking notes' but the general scope goes like this:

Elephant herds are largely matriarichal as both a means of protection- elephants have a long childhood and it's easier to protect calves in a group, AND as a socio-political means of sexual choice.

An African elephant is pregnant for nearly two years, then she spends at least 3-5 years with that calf completely dependent on her, so she only gets a few opportunities to have babies before she hits menopause, and it's a lot of damn work so she is naturally EXTREMELY picky about who she mates with. And if she's younger, her mom, sisters and grandmothers will also be real picky about who she mates with and WHEN too- can't go around risking a teenage pregnancy, especially not with asubstandard male. Elephants also have a pretty clear idea of what they want out of a Male too: they have a marked preference for Large, Old, Socially Adept Males. Large males are HEALTHY males with all thier bones in place and functioning digestive tracts. OLD males are healthy, have good intelligence to stay alive, and have good teeth. Socally Adept Males can make friends, get along with her whole family, won't engage in dangerous behaviors like trying to kill her calves or grandmothers. It's a good system that produces robust, intelligent and helpful calves.

This means however, that most female elephants are into Dilfs, or even Gilfs. Which is extremely frustrating when you are a horny teenage boy elephant, so they go a bit nuts with hormones and social isolation and get involved in teenage elephant gangs and do things like murder rhinos out of sexual and social frustration.

BUT! If there are Large, Old, Socially Adept males about, they like being parents too, but are largely pushed out of the role by the matriarichal herds and their strict group politics that exist to prevent unsuitable mating. So They turn thier attention to these violent orphans and like your beloved Batman go "I'm gonna parent the shit outta that."

They mostly do this by herding the Lads around, pointedly demonstrating Behaviors like "How to dig for roots so you don't starve" or "How to knock over a tree" or "Greeting a Matriach Properly so she doesn't sic her descendants on you", and disciplinary behaviors like "Jabbing naughty Lads in the ass with a tusk" and "Hitting you in the face with a branch until you STOP THAT" . This is WILDLY beneficial for the young males under thier tutelage, who are less likely to die of accidents, and start mating earlier because they've had a Suitable Gentleman make introductions for them, like they are fancy men at a regency-era ball being intoduced to the debutantes.

Actually, the claim that HRT doesn’t do much after puberty is a myth.  I started when I was 31 years old and now I’m 35. =)

for starters, there’s Twine, which is fucking great for making all kinds of interactive experiences (it’s what Crystal Warrior Ke$ha was made in so you KNOW it’s good) at all skill levels (i picked it up and made a game in two minutes a few nights ago)

if you want a bit more involved experience there’s Inform 7 which is a simple language for text-based adventure games that reads like slightly-weird English and also relatively easy to learn

you can do some pretty fucking cool stuff with Unity (my personal engine of choice) but you may need to dig a bit farther to get at the good stuff. there’s lots of really good presets though (i made an entire game just mixing and matching pre-existing templates and adding in my own art, won an award at a game jam for that one) and if you want help the community’s pretty dang friendly from what i’ve seen!

2D Editors:

GameMaker : Potential for pure drag-and-drop “programming”. It is recommended to read-up on the program’s functions to make good use of it. Good for prototyping.
