Did you know that -igh is pronounced differently in every dialect of Irish?
This can confuse people a lot when they're learning verbs, especially when they're taught with a mix of the dialects but each dialect is quite internally consistent with it.
This also applies to -idh as slender dh and slender gh have merged in every dialect.
In Connacht these are entirely silent, so in an unstressed syllable they're just pronounced like a schwa, a neutral vowel.
Cheannaigh (bought) -> Cheanna
Bhailigh (collected) -> Bhaile
Cuirfidh (will put) -> Cuirhe
Samhraidh (of summer) -> Samhra
In Ulster and Munster, the pronounciation is also a schwa when it is a verb form before a pronoun:
Cheannaigh sé (He bought) -> Cheanna sé
Cuirfidh sé (He will put) -> Cuirhe sé
But, if it isn't before a pronoun then it is pronounced like 'Ă' in Ulster and like 'ig' in Munster.
Cheannaigh Seán -> Cheannaà Seán (Ulster), Cheannaig Seán (Munster)
Nigh (Wash) -> NĂ (Ulster), Nig (Munster)
Samhraidh -> SamhraĂ (Ulster), Samhraig (Munster)

here is the list in case anyone wants it :) there's definitely more stuff out there but i think this is enough for now considering this list has over 130 films on it and i've only seen 1 of them
(not all of them are entirely in a celtic language and some of them are only short films)
there only appear to be 2 manx films on the entirety of letterboxd although other stuff does exist!!

update for podcasts in 2025: i am going to go ahead and plug Dúchas from Raidió Rà Rá which is a podcast about folklore, mythology, fairytales (pisreoga) and irish heritage
check out their first episode about the banshee and see if it works for you but the two lads are very funny and i had a blast

celtic languages mega drive folder
261 files and 13 subfolders
i've been meaning to share my folder of celtic language pdfs for a while now, especially since duolingo has gotten even worse. the folder has pdfs of language-learning material, as well as some stuff on literature, history, indentity, etc. this is very much a work-in-progress, as i will add to the folder as i find more resources.
my folder currently has: welsh, breton, cornish, irish, scottish gaelic, manx, béarlagair na saor, early modern irish and classical gaelic, old irish, middle welsh, old welsh, and proto-celtic (although not all of them have a lot of pdfs in their folders yet).

Grammar time
This was my mams when she was in school and she gave it to me. It has everything from how to congugate regular verbs and every irregular verb, how to put things into questions, how to reply in the affirmative/the negative, useful question words, prepositions, all of the essentials. It's okay if you don't understand all of it, I didn't at first, but now I love this cheat sheet
since a ton of people are getting into music as gaeilge because of hozier, can i recommend my fave artist, rĂłisĂn seoighe? she's a native irish speaker and language ambassador whose lyrics often involve the preservation of irish culture and deep rage against colonization. nĂl mĂ© marbh ("i'm not dead") makes me cry like a baby and sin do lamh ("reach out") makes me want to burn all of colonialism down. she's also done several collabs with imlĂ©, another EXCELLENT irish language band that does modern-feeling rock and dance music! my fave of their collabs right now is ÉAD ("jealous").
both artists have less than 1,700 monthly listeners on spotify simply because they sing in irish & they deserve more bc their music Really Is Excellent. translations of many songs are google-able & when there Aren't english translations, it's really good practice for people learning irish!
