a lot of people dont care about insect biomass collapse bc when they hear we are losing 2.5% of the insect biomass per year they just imagine the cockroach and housefly population decreasing by that much. they dont realize those are among the only ones that will remain unbothered
you can make a little oasis right where you are, and it matters
every year of restoring native plants I see a great increase in the insect populations, and loads of new insects i never saw before (all of them harmless--the insects that are harmful or parasitic on humans are the main ones being unaffected by the decrease in insect populations)
(a large part of) the problem is Plant Sameness. we must restore plant diversity
This kind of bums me out and tbh I'm tired of posting bug photos when I know that these same bugs will become harder to come by in the future.
In Singapore, large parts of forests are going to be cleared for housing soon and they have endangered/ critically endangered plants and animals. The sad thing is that I don't think most people will care.
Sure, most people can say that it's a pity, but I think most will think it's a necessary evil for the economy. There are people who are very detached from the outside, spend most of their time in buildings and only think about nature when it inconveniences them.
Signing petitions and rallying against deforestation plans can only go so far if most people don't know what a forest is.

Today's wasp of the day is Cratomus megacephala!

"mega-cephala" means "big head" but what that leaves out is that said big head is also shaped like a human thyroid. And what benefit is there to having a bow tie shaped noggin? Well, it's theorized that those little nubbins are what help this wasp push their way through their cocoon (and host) when they're done with their pupa nap.

Disclaimer: Some species of wasps and bees can sting and may lead to death if you're allergic. Whenever I hold a wasp, I know that there's always a risk of being stung. I'm probably just very lucky.
For the past year or so, I've been going out of my way to pick up bees and wasps. Not by grabbing at them or anything, I just give them a finger to walk on if they want to or letting them land on me.
Tbh I've never seen a yellowjacket or Africanized bee in my life since they don't live in my area, and the bees and paper wasps I see seem to be fairly chill in comparison. Perhaps I'd be scared of them if I got chased by a hive of bees or wasps or gotten stung. I have a goal of holding as many species of bees and wasps as possible.

Left is a super smol caterpillar that fell onto me with zero survival instinct, so I had to relocate it. Second jumping spider is walking on a footpath, so I moved it. Third is probably some kind of planthopper.

Sometimes bees, wasps, birds and other pollinators will poke a hole through the base of the flower to get to the nectar instead of doing it the old-fashioned way (entering from the front) because it's too tedious / their mouths are too short.
This bee got too excited. The greed of this bee sickens me /jk
