i'm an entomologist and love taking pictures of creatures. there'll be a lot of photos of live beasts in the world that i've seen, but probably the majority of pics in here will be of dead specimens i see at work, so if dead insects make you sad you probably should not follow this blog

i'm extremely inconsistent about tagging things, and will not always identify the bugs that i post, at least initially, if i'm feeling lazy or busy, but will try and go back and add taxonomic information when i have the energy. always feel free to send me an ask for IDs or information on both the things that i post or of things that you found

That 'bycid grub I picked up last November is still doing fine if anyone was curious. It seems entirely uninterested in pupating but also doesn't seem unhappy in any way I can tell either, so uh, keep on grubbin' away little dude I guess

visited a home with a telephone pole beetle (Micromalthus debilis) infestation today. i was able to collect an unbelievable number of adults, which will be sent to various insect collections. i dont really have words for how mind boggling this is

Been working on the staphylinids lately. The most diverse group of beetles in north america and probably the world. Really cool little things, really miserable to identify.

Here's a few handsome guys I've identified recently: Adranes taylori, Thoracophorus costalis, Siagonium punctatum.

hi ive been thinking about going into entomology and i recently came across your blog. ik itll vary depending on who i ask and ofc you dont need to answer if you dont want but, how’s the pay? i have a great interest in bugs and doing any work involving them however im not sure if id be able to pursue it realistically. anyways besides that, hope you have a good one and i admire your work and posts you make lots :^)

The pay is okay. It's enough to support myself and my partner though not by a ton, but I do have good insurance for the both of us which is pretty clutch.

As you say, there are tons of entomology jobs of all kinds out there and the pay and benefits are going to vary widely. You're unlikely to find many rich entomologists but it's still possible to make a middle-class life as an entomologist and you get to look at bugs all day, which I'd much prefer to making a lot more money in a job or field that bores me.

Decided to fuck around and try sorting my lab's big collection of inchneumonids. So far I've gotten most of them to subfamily and a pretty decent number to genus. Since they're from the western US that's literally as far as a non-expert can get since they're so poorly studied out here

Sorry if this has already been asked, but could you explain what your job missions are and what they lead to, what your work environment is like (do you often go on the field?), if your coworkers have different missions...? What's the hardest part of your job? When I was young I was interested in becoming an entomologist but I was pushed in another direction, so I'd like to know what's the reality of this job beside the job description I read on orientation sites ^^

Entomology covers a lot of different disciplines and and jobs so what I do as an entomologist is often going to be significantly different from what another entomologist does. In any case I mostly do lab work identifying potential pest insects that were caught in survey traps set around my state, and often those from other states without their own identification labs. I sometimes help with setting or collecting the traps as well when needed.

So for example I'll get a sample of bark beetles from a trap that looks like this:

and then go through and record the number and the species of everything in there and make note of if any of them are known pest species or aren't known to occur in the area the trap was set.

It's great! I could sit and identify insects for 12+ hours a day if I didn't have a loving spouse to make sure I come home and eat dinner and do other things adult humans are supposed to do.
