We’re still trying to prove the concept because in the West, Big Business and their owners, The 1%, are screaming at the thought of having to give up a little money so everyone can get universal income that supports life - meaning jobs either have to pay you to put up with the literal shit or people can walk away from them without becoming homeless.

Our entire system is basically based on people being so afraid of homelessness and starvation that they’ll accept any shit job for shit pay.

The reason we don’t have UBI is not because it costs too much money like they say it’s because it would take away the leverage businesses have over their employees (starvation and death)

me dad says that when he first went to go see mad max in theaters that it seemed very apocalyptic, ridiculously so, to see a character selling bottled water. the notion of selling it like that was outlandish. I think about that a lot and how such an idea has become normalized to the point where a new viewer wouldn't bat an eye at it today. god!!! im mad!! name one cliche YA novel where the government actually is BAD like not just “oh love is illegal” or “they barcode you!!uwu” instead of like. actual slavery and rampant poverty while the rich waste their money on dumb bullshit!! and name one main character who ACTUALLY suffers under the government’s regime!! who actually starves and works and suffers and has genuine REASON to rebel!! thg is the only YA book that had anything to say about wealth disparity and the dehumanization of the poor,, every other YA book uses it as a plot device to put some dumbass romance together or show how “badass” the MC is!! thg is genuinely emotional and the focus of the book isnt katniss’s archery and how cool she is and its NOT gale or fucking peeta bread. and then the marketing for the stupid fucking movies took the WHOLE POINT OF THE BOOK (which is to satirize and critique how women in entertainment have any serious things about them ignored in favor of whatever dress theyre wearing or who they’re dating) and turns that into……….. a fucking love triangle. and then the world forgets it because its just another dumb teen girl series. okay. 

oh also last thing. the fact that at the end katniss chose to kill Coin (the rebel leader/soon to be newest dictator) instead of just having a plain and simple boring happy ending shows just how different thg is from the YA fiction its compared to. no other book in this genre would have the guts (or even the idea) to put out such a blatant, obvious “the fight against oppression never ends, stay diligent” message and thg is iconic for it and it shows how much thought was actually put into its message. im sorry to susan collins for my 12 yo self for not understanding at the time and thinking it was just bad writing

It's hard to explain how alienating the media has been this year as an "essential worker". Every single piece of media produced this year is about how "we're all" stuck inside all the time now, and I'm just like..... I got two weeks at home when I actually had covid and otherwise have gone to work every single day I normally would. All these adverts and news show lines about how we're all in this together and we're all spending our days baking banana bread and zoom calling and all this and I'm like..... Well, not all of us I guess. And it's weirdly alienating and makes you feel weird and cut off

we need to talk about this more. being forgotten by capitalism is deeply terrifying, because when we’re not marketable we don’t exist.

I don’t even know anyone irl whose lives have been truly disrupted like that, who’ve only been leaving their house for groceries or food and to come back or whatever. Literally everyone I know is an essential worker. No one at any point worked from home. It’s been plainly spelled out that I and everyone I love are completely disposable in such a blatant way.
