A Proper Portrait
(I really wanted to draw Cobi from my fic, "Hand Me My Shovel, I'm Going In" but in the way people would see her realistically! I'm pretty happy with the result.)
“Who is that?”
“That’s Lady Cobigail.”
“…”
“Byoolah?”
“She’s beautiful.”
am I insane or is the glorification and sort of objectification of Japanese/Korean/East Asian cultures as a whole and anime kind of concerning?
Like I'm Slavic-Canadian (Polish-Ukrainian heritage, born n raised in Canada), so I can't speak for shit, but like...I guess I'd be a little happy if a lot of people suddenly started to ADORE the Witcher. Like, hey, my place made that :D
But if it was the ONE thing people knew about Poland, that and making it seem like some sort of heavenly utopia, I think I'd start feeling a little off. Especially if I'm expected to suddenly BE a character in the Witcher, no matter the fact it's literally a work of fiction.
Same thing for Canada. If everyone suddenly liked Anne with an E, I'd be a bit happy. Yay, people like this thing, patriot stuff, woo! :D But then if it's the ONLY thing people like, and people think that Canada is in the exact same shape as when this HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD BOOK was written, I'd feel uncomfortable.
Like, this sort of thing has turned me off on anime and engaging with Asian media — especially with the way that you're kind of viewed if you like it. It's also just...not for me. I don't really get the hype. Is it just because it came from elsewhere? Because I feel like these are sort of just...normal story plots, with their strengths and yet also their flaws. Anyone could write a story, and where it originated from doesn't really matter. I don't want to read Junji Ito's works because it's from a Japanese author, I want to read it because it's apparently jaw-droppingly terrifying and I like horror. The author — as long as they're not a terrible person — doesn't matter much to me, the work itself does.
I mean, it is good that media from other locations is popular and well-loved, but it seems a bit like it looped back around to seeming strange to me. But then again, I could be insane — this could be fine. I could be doing the white person thing where I get offended for other people. I'm an outsider looking at other outsiders.
Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Like...would you be saying all that about an Australian person? A South-African person? A Serbian person? Feels weird.
augh god sorry for talking blehhhh this is probably a bad take I'm sorry
white people be like i know orientalism is bad because imagine if it happened to white cultures

turns out the cure to art block (or mine at the very least) is a really pretty black person
“how did you get into writing” girl nobody gets into writing. writing shows up one day at your door and gets into you
"how did you get into writing" girl i've been tormented by the visions since i was eight years old
I was looking through some old files, and I forgot that Huzzle Mug's original tongue was This lol
any art pet peeves?
You mean, things I don't like? Sure. I am not a fan of nearly perfect circle-tool eyes for cartoons. Especially when they're touching. I just don't care for how it looks. When every character has the same lifeless eyes, it just doesn't hit right for me. The symmetry tool being used for more organic drawings feels odd to me. For highly graphic-design centric things, it looks great. But for cartoony or organic drawings of people, I think it looks odd. To have an entire body, hands, face, mirrored? It feels very stilted and lifeless. I think I am not too keen on the way a lot of online animation trends are animated. The way everything is constantly bouncing to the beat, overly-tweened. Almost gelatinous looking, everything jiggling around. They usually have this almost sterile, perfectly tapered lineart, perfect coloring, polished look to them... it is a little hard to detect the artist's soul, watching these. Nothing wrong with tweening, but this bouncing thing... It's a bit overstimulating to look at, and I feel it holds the animation back as a whole- it almost feels like a crutch. I think the first time I saw this, was that Mystery Skulls- Ghost animated music video. I liked that one! But somehow, it seems like that technique has gotten a bit overused, and misused, 11 years later. I am glad people are creating things of course, but there are a lot of other ways to animate things, and I think folks would have great fun learning other techniques! Nothing has to be perfectly colored, lined, bouncy like that. It's ok to be messy and weird.
I have to stop now. In the end, I'm happy people are creating art- that in and of itself is impressive and awesome. BUT, you asked, and you shall receive lol.
hiii how have you been doing
Happy and Hector have been well. They've spent most of their time trying to stay cool, though. Drainfolk don't tolerate heat very well.
Hector's also been growing strawberries. He thinks that he's doing a good job, and he hopes he can grow more fruits when he gets the space.

I really like the idea of Simon not being able to control his mutated mouth lol ( & I love making these two terrorize Grace together)
Does anyone have that one clear picture of Simon with all his mutations I'm trying to fuck him up severely

I just had the horrifying image of Thespius not realizing what happens when a God overstays inside of a mortal.
The God of Love and Mirth crying out as He rips through one of His followers’ bodies.
He tries to put them back but He can’t.
Oh wait wait you’re cooking… you’re actually cooking
This could genuinely make such an awesome ggg au
