We were covering T.S. Eliot in class once and my professor quoted “This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper” then said “What does a whimper sound like? Can anyone give me a whimper?” and I whimpered. I was the only person in the class who fucking whimpered.

apparently youre supposed to perform. they love it when you perform. but it has to be authentic. they hate it when it's not authentic. but you have to perform.

My great uncle has a fairly large port wine birthmark on his face. As a very young child, far too young to understand the offensive connotations of the question, I asked him what happened to his face. He told me he used to work with dangerous chemicals and got splashed in the face and burned when he was a young man. I was totally willing to believe there was a chemical that left you with a permanent red-purple patch if it touched your skin. No childhood pictures exist of him because he was a foster kid in the 60s and 70s so I really believed that story until adulthood. He got me good.

The really unfortunate thing about mental health progress is that sometimes you realize you've made it in the form of "wow, I haven't felt this bad in a fucking while"

On the one hand it's a bit of a pick me up in a dark place to know that this will pass because it has passed before on the other hand sometimes it isn't entirely a pleasant thought to go "wow, I used to feel like this all the time. That was pretty fucking bad. It's pretty bad right now too also."

Someday your current baseline will be the sort of thing you consider A Really Bad Day. It does get better.
