Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - this would work for me either as movie or a dead boy detectives-eque series. I can picture how vibrant and beautiful everything would be. And I think the Dead Boy Detective style of transitions, the colors, and sense of humor would truly work here. ( also rip Dead Boy Detectives, i'll never forgive Netflix for cancelling you. What we could have fucking had.)

Basically, Casey Mcquiston's entire body of work. The Pairing can be a very lovely and devastating travel rom com movie and One Last Stop would be a great show with specific episodes for each of the characters and their respective love stories. We could get flashbacks to August's uncle and Jane's life too. I Kissed Shara Wheeler would be a teen treasure hunt movie a la Paper Towns but better and with a killer soundtrack.

Monk and Robot series by Becky Chambers - pls this would kill as a cozy animated series. Mosscap just dropping wisdom off to us every episode as we learn with Dex. Soft and soothing emotional lessons, and there could be illustrated tea recipes at the end of each episode.

Green Creek Series by TJ Klune - This is what they should have adapted instead of trying to make a Teen Wolf Movie or new Teen wolf shows. There is enough source material for several seasons and it is so angsty. Yes, it might be a little difficult for the audience to switch over to new main characters every once in a while but it also means everyone's faves get a chance to shine. I want this so much. Pls.

The Darkness outside us by Eliot Schrefer. This book made me sob when I first read it. I know it's a lot to put into a movie but I think that's the best format. Especially, because of the twists. I think each iteration of the pair would be more significant in a movie. But I can be persuaded. I just think this story has so much to teach us about life and how we are living it right now. Plus it's so much wrapped up in one. It's space, it's gay, it's devastating, it's inspiring, it's cosmic and body horror, it's science fiction, it's thriller, it's commentary on Nationalism and capitalism, love and personhood. It is literally everything to me.

All for the Game Series by Nora Sakovic. Look, we are realistically never going to get this. It's so insane but wouldn't it be wild if we did? There's more discourse about it now because it is tangentially related to Heated rivalry being a queer sports story. I would want it to be a show, at least Neil's trilogy. Then maybe Jean's books would be movies because they are happening simultaneously? Haven't really thought about that yet. People would have to get really cool with complex and remorseless characters. I don't know if I could take people slandering them even though they literally murder people. But they are my boys and girls! And I strongly believe that it would technically be historical fiction like Heated Rivalry. This is the early 200s ya'll. Neil is wearing the jorts and bandanna combo and Andrew is buying him nokia flip phone.

I hate that the only effective response I can give to “boys are shit” is “well I’m not a boy.” I feel like I am selling out the boy in baseball pajamas that sat with me on the bed while I tried to figure out which one I was supposed to be, and the boys who I have met and loved from inside my boy suit—who believed they were talking to a boy. I feel like I am burning the history of the naked body that sits on the floor of my shower. The body that went to prom in a boxy tuxedo and coveted the dresses.

Because I am not a boy, but I had a boyhood. I was, and am, made to live as a boy and I cannot suspend the perspective that gave me and join in when it’s time to fluster one of those clueless fuckers into anger by calling him a fuckboi and then tell him his anger proves he’s a fuckboi, or to humiliate one with an OKCupid screenshot because we’ve willfully conflated the clumsy ones with the threatening ones so we can grab those solidarity faves. It’s fucked up. It has metastasized.

More than a few out transwomen have told me, privately, they they are uncomfortable with these things, but are afraid that speaking up about it would cause ciswomen to like and trust them less. “I play along,” one of them told me, “because in the queer community the only people who defend cisboys are cisboys. Have you noticed, when a product is marketed in an unnecessarily gendered way, that the blame shifts depending on the gender? That a pink pen made “for women” is (and this is, of course, true) the work of idiotic cynical marketing people trying insultingly to pander to what they imagine women want? But when they make yogurt “for men” it is suddenly about how hilarious and fragile masculinity is — how men can’t eat yogurt unless their poor widdle bwains can be sure it doesn’t make them gay? #MasculinitySoFragile is aimed, with smug malice, at men—not marketers.

This conclusion—widely shared—is a product of insulated discourse. What I am NOT saying is: “open the floodgates, let in the shitty male trolls!” I know the trolls—they have tried to be my friends, they have tried to sneak into feminist spaces with no desire to learn or listen. I understand not trusting men who loudly and constantly hold forth on women’s issues and refuse to accept when they are mistaken. I’m not encouraging anyone to trust blindly. I am pleading to the discoursers: consider that this insulation has effects and try to mitigate them, if your priority really is finding truth amid a muck of concealed patriarchal lies. Check to see if maybe you are saying things and reproducing things mostly because it sounds good and feels good and nobody is challenging them.

These are not discursive problems that only apply to an “undercover” transwoman, these are discursive problems that are seemingly only visible to an “undercover” transwoman forced to carry multiple perspectives like bactrian humps.
