I often wonder what happened to authors of unfinished fanfictions.
I hope they’re having a nice life
we absolutely are not and that unfinished fic haunts us to this day

Dialogue tips that actually work:
You are not writing a movie (ignore this if you are). The reader doesn't need to know every word the characters say for the duration of the story. Less is more.
Dialogue can happen within the prose. "And they awkwardky discussed the weather for five minutes" is way better than actually writing five pages of dialogue about the weather.
Balance your dialogues. Surprise yourself with a monosyllabic answe to a dialogue that's ten sentences long. Don't be afraid of letting your character use half a page for a reply or nothing at all!
Don't write accents phonetically, use slang and colloquialisms if needed.
Comma before "said" and no caps after "!?" unless it's an action tag. Study dialogue punctuation.
Learn the difference between action tags and dialogue tags. Then, use them interchangeably (or none at all).
Don't be afraid to use said. Use said if characters are just saying things, use another word if not. Simple. There's no need to use fancy synonyms unless absolutely necessary.
Not everyone talks the same way so it makes sense for your characters to use certain words more often than others. Think of someone who says "like" to start every sentence or someone who talks really slow. Be creative.
Use prose to slow down the pace during a conversation.
Skip prose to speed up the pace during a conversation.
This guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s one of the lead writers for Leverage and if you ever watch the series on DVD, do yourself a favor and listen to him talk about how the scripts got written. Some of the advice he has is stuff I use all the time: 1. Don’t introduce an important plot person or thing after the first half of the story. 2. Always tie up loose ends. 3. Introduce important things in the middle of unimportant things. 4. If you have to infodump, find an emotion to tie it to and it will seem less like infodump and more like a motive rant. Seriously this guy knows how to write.
Former fanfiction.net writers! What was your toxic trait?
Fic is 57 chapters long, but only 20k words ⌨️
Author’s notes in the middle of a paragraph 😝
Way. Too. Many. Characters. 👨👩👧👦
Grammar? Never heard of her. 🖍️
*posts new chapter that’s just an explanation for why chapter is late* ⏰
Song lyrics typed out into the fic itself 🎼
Never finishing a WIP 💀
(I never wrote on ffn, I just wanna see a bunch of authors roast themselves 😇)

I know a ton of people have said this before but for the love everything PLEASE stop treating AO3 like instagram. It is NOT cringe to comment on an old story. It’s an archive old stories are still meant to be found and read. Please think about interacting with the fic you read: at least kudos if you read it, a comment would be ideal. The authors will be over the moon. I guarantee you not a single author is going to ask why someone is commenting on an older fic.
I LIVE for my morning "You've got kudos" email. I have to fan myself if there's a comment.
ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO FINISH THAT FIC!!!
This is so inspiring and uplifting.
three days ago I got an ao3 subscription update email and the author’s note on the chapter said they’d come back and written chapter ten SIXTEEN YEARS after chapter nine was published, so, never fear to hit that subscribe button folks
It took Stephen King 26 YEARS to write the next chapter of one of his Dark Tower books
LEAVE THAT COMMENT. Even if the fic is old. You never know who’s listening, or if your words are exactly the little push that author needs to take a trip down memory lane and remember all the wonderful things that inspired them to write the fic in the first place. Think about it, Reader. YOU could be the person that RESURRECTS THAT FIC!
im so small and tired
Every writing advice thing ever: Don’t get bogged down in details on your first draft. Just write! ☺️
Me: How I begin this scene hinges on whether cheese sandwiches were served with mayo in the 50’s.
have not seen anything more relatable today >.<
let me link the world’s most useful twitter thread.
some excerpts:
there’s nothing to stop you from using the <get there> method for research details. in fact, i know many many writers who use it for just that.
gonna just put this on all my blogs for anyone who needs to see it as NaNo approaches
For those of you watching the death spiral of Twitter in real time THIS IS WHY us fandom olds always defend AO3 and it’s donation drives.
Twitter is an incalculable loss for artistic expression, news, and so many other facets I can’t even begin to count.
This sort of loss of information is impossible with AO3 and how it’s set-up. Obviously an AO3 style model isn’t sustainable for every site bc the moment images get involved the server costs skyrocket exponentially, but now more than ever the theory applies.
AO3 is an archive of our own, donators have direct say via vote about what happens to the site, you help shape it.
As long as AO3 has donation drives and doesn’t rely on advertisers it will remain around as a foremost place of art and freedom of expression. What happened to Twitter can’t happen to AO3 as it currently exists. And that is why we fight tooth and nail to protect AO3 from corporate interests and out of touch billionaires like Musk.
I hate that Twitter is dying and that anyone has to experience it, but please learn from this experience!

unstoppable force (sudden fic ideas) vs. immovable object (adult responsibilities)
readers: if you want an author to update and it’s been a while, talk to them about their headcanons and characterizations for that fic. ask them why they made the choices they did.
9 times out of 10, you might spark something :)
basically this, yes (via @morethanthedark)
me, being beaten in the town square for content: wait i can use this as whump research
terrible news. the exact fanfiction i want has not magically appeared and i may have to write it myself. more at 11
imagine leaving academia to live in the woods but being so stuck mentally in academic resentments that you send bombs to professors and grad students and spend your time working on a publication
weirdest type of guy in existence is "really smart with a fundamentally warped worldview"
i love it when you read multiple works from a writer and you start being able to pick out the things that stick with them. like the themes they keep thinking about, that can’t be satisfied with just one poem or novel or story. or the motifs they like to reuse and recycle throughout their works like an extradiagetic thread. it’s like drawing a map through a writer’s collection of all the things that keep them up at night
#also #to writers: you're ALLOWED TO DO THIS #you're allowed to use motifs and themes as much as you want #you can use them again to say something new #you can twist them from how you've used them before #you can do WHATEVER YOU WANT #I can't tell you how many authors (of fic and not!fic) #that I keep coming back to because I'm like: oh this writer is going to be soft about x #or this writer is going to lean heavy into found family #or this writer is going to gut punch me with the emotional intimacy #love your brand kids #love your motifs #love your themes (via @itwaswhileyouweresleeping)
