just in case anyone forgot how wildly colorful Georgian interiors could be, even among the working class to the wealthy:
and EVEN WHEN things were more muted/neutral, the neutrality was OFFSET by ACCENT COLORS and HIGH CONTRAST between the wood tones and everything ELSE
ALSO AMERICAN COLONIAL INTERIORS POPPED OFF, Y'ALL (IN TERMS OF COLOR/COZINESS)
PEOPLE USED WHITEWASH AND COLORFUL TRIM OR EVEN JUST COLORFUL FURNITURE IF THEY COULD AFFORD TO DO SO
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON FRENCH AND BRITISH AND AMERICAN WALLPAPERS
"ELIZABETH" YOU CRY, "WHY ARE YOU BEING SO EXTRA THIS MORNING?! IT'S MONDAY"
Because, my friend, my war on GREIGE will NEVER end.
Historic interiors were filled with LIFE and LIGHT and COLOR. ALWAYS HAVE BEEN.
Part of the reason we don't see a lot of textile art is because, frankly, textiles tend to degrade over time - especially ones that had utility! And yes, pigments and weaving and dying all boosted the expense of things, when we were finally reliably block-printing fabrics and broad reams of paper, it was no longer just the wealthy who could afford pretty patterns!
In the Americas, a far wider variety of pigments also became available because of the abundance of... well, a shitton of flora and minerals, some of which weren't as common in Europe.
WHY THE HIGHLIGHTER COLORS? you ask.
CANDLES.
Those colors reflect candlelight and natural sunlight REALLY WELL.
Humans LOVE bright colors, it's NOT just a thing for kids. We live in a brilliant, vibrant, multifaceted world. We ALWAYS have.
(STOP MAKING YOUR HISTORIC SIMS 4 BUILDS BE BLAND. STOP IT.)
On the subject of Colonial America: don't forget, even if you couldn't afford wallpaper, wall stenciling might still be in reach!
(If ever you have the opportunity to visit the Stencil House at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont (pictured above at 3, 4, and 5), I highly recommend.)
And that's before you get into American painted murals:
Embrace the decorative arts, folks!
OH MY GODS, SOMEONE DIED AT THE GAVINNERS CONCERT!
Alright I want to know something here:

Is That Allowed
Boy am i glad that the con has a facebook page so i can post this photo:
Iβm sooo fascinated by this idea people have that itβs unrealistic that Hayden and Cliff donβt make the leap from Jane to Shane/Lily to Ilya. I really donβt think anyone in their deeply heteronormative world is going to assume that Jane and Lily are men. Itβs not going to cross their minds as an option
I think thereβs sort of this idea in the fandom that no one assumes Ilya is gay because he hooks up with women a lot but that Shane isnβt so lucky. But I just donβt think any NHL player would suggest that Shane is gay as anything more than a joke.
Shane is the best player in the league. Heβs hockey personified. He canβt be gay in these peopleβs minds. He canβt be. Itβs unfathomable. I mean, when Scott comes out in the books, Carter genuinely canβt believe it at first. We didnβt see Shane come out to the Voyageurs in the books, but I personally think they would have a similar reaction (but less kind)
And Shane in particular is likely reduced to a sexless robot in some of their minds because of anti Asian racism. I think his teammates would be reeling, I donβt think itβs ever crossed their minds as a real possibility that heβs been sucking dick for years. Heβs Shane Hollander! He just hasnβt settled down because heβs married to hockeyβ¦right?
Like Iβve seen people say itβs an insult to Haydenβs intelligence when fic writers write him as having no clue that Shane is gay, that of course he would know, butβ¦HOW? Literally how would he know? There is no framework for it, there is no precedent, being gay in menβs hockey is just not DONE. Itβs a non starter
Thereβs a reason Hayden canonically connects the dots only after Shane comes out to him. Once he knows Shane likes men, yeah, itβs obvious. But before that? I just donβt think these men are considering it at all. Theyβve either reduced Shane to a sexless hockey stick in their minds or they assume Shane is sleeping with women more than he is. And letβs be real, theyβre much more concerned with how theyβre gonna get off than how Shane is
Basically, I just donβt think Shane has to prove that Lily is a woman. Because in the minds of his peersβ¦how could she not be?
Do you think there are culturally appropriative cardassians. Do you think there are cardassians out there talking about the traditional bajoran meditating techniques they learnt whilst vacationing on cardassia occupied bajor. Do you think thereβs cardassians who have like peace tattooed on their leg in bajoran calibri. Do you think thereβs cardassians who wear bajoran earrings. Do you think they think theyβre woke and counter cultural
Sure.
3k people had to be evacuated in my city today because they found a WW2 unexploded bomb. All trams were stopped for that reason too, smh.

For International Chocolate Day (7 July), the beginning of a long tongue-in-cheek poem "In the due praise of Divine Chocolate" written in 1651 by Diego de Vadesforte. At the time, chocolate had only recently been brought to Europe from the Americas, and was taken solely as a drink. The rest of the poem is available here.
Olah Lodam, a young, beautiful, and principled Cardassian woman, has turned her own father over to the state for treasonβtestifying against him in open court and severing every tie to his disgrace. The state has declared her loyalβ¦ but Cardassian society is far less forgiving. Suspicion clings to her and her family like a shadow, and protection can only go so far. To survive, Oloh needs legitimacy. She needs a husband, and quickly. A Gul would be idealβbut in desperate times, any rising officer might do. Glinn Rojo Dal is dedicated to the military, but he is nearly forty and his ambitions of becoming a Gul are stalled by his solitary life. His commanding officer has made it clear: devotion must be proven not just in service, but in legacy. A wife could change everything, and luckily there is a woman on Cardassia II who is in urgent need of a husband. Perhaps they could come to some mutually beneficial arrangement, but they might just lose their hearts along the way
GUL OF HER CHOICE the original trashy cardassian literature the Redux. This one has never seen the likes of the DS9 Lunch Replimat Book Club, perhaps just under damar's bed. special thanks to @ur-cute-so-i
Damar finds Mila's copy in the cellar, just as Mila is coming down the stairs. Their eyes meet...
So I was thinking about Garak and Julian expanding their cultural exchange to include movies, which got me considering what Cardassian movies would be like, and then specifically what Cardassian movies Garak would watch.
long story short, Julian will fall asleep, dad-style, on the couch an hour into the movie and right in the middle of the fifth major monologue; Garak will be pissy about it; and Julian will not apologize for it because it's not his fault Cardassian Citizen Kane is seven hours long.
Bashir puts on the full-length cut of Abel Ganceβs NapolΓ©on as revenge. Garak is mesmerised. He goes off and does some research and then demands they see it again the following week in the holosuite but this time with the live orchestra, dinner break, and gun salute.
I'll nominate An Elephant Sitting Still as another option.
Julian wishes this ad was actually a depiction of what happens in the movie described:
I still maintain that Julian should inflict (affectionate) Bollywood on Garak.

67: "...wiping down the jars..." ...okay then.
111: "But before I could strategize and prepare and announce my plan, Ebo blurted it out...called the bully a minnow, and me a shark..." No comment.
112: "...even ready to tell ANYONE..." Yah, I do yap a lot :P
206: If I share the full sentence, I M I G H T spoil what the book is, so I'll just do the first two lines ( it's in poem format ). "As soon as I get home, I sit at the kitchen table."
394: "Any place is better than this one, and you said as long as we are together, we are all right. So, if you're going, then I'm going. This place is too evil, Nana. Too much badness wrapped up in all the goodness that could be." ...goddamn.

111: 'But the colours are the same...' Ummm... emotions? Nature? Yeahh no idea.

Sorry for the fact that I might not have an English book at home, instead my and my sistersβ shelves are exploding with French novels instead but Iβll translate!
17: "Change" β okay, idk what that means for a description xD I changed alot ig? (yeoch-)
42: "Phèdre, ne partez pas comme ça."
=> "PhΓ¨dre, donβt go like that." β Does that mean I will disappear in my life? geez thanks, fortune teller π€£
67: "Je me fais un thΓ© aux Γ©pices"
=> "I make myself tea with spices" β Sounds delicious, never seen a spiced tea but the first thing I thought was a Pain DβΓ©pice (itβs good if youβve ever tried it. I think i only ate it twice in my life but i still remember the taste) tbh cozy vibes xD
111: "Je ne peux mβempΓͺcher un rire cynique."
=> "I couldnβt stop myself a cynical laugh" β DIABOLICALLY ACCURATE π€£
112: "Pardon, mais elle a quand mΓͺme grassement piochΓ© dans ce qui ne lui revenait pas."

206: "Pendant deux jours, Adam a prΓ©vu de sβabsenter pour les besoins de son documentaire."
=> "For two days, Adam has planned to be away for the needs of his documentary." β Explains page 42, gosh and given that my friends pointed out how I don't talk often on social media while on the other side of my life iβm just focusing on my hobbies rather than doomscrolling at home... I do what feels more productive and relaxing for me instead of seeking overstimulation, but I still feel kinda guilty of leaving my friends waiting there everytime weβre separated from meeting IRL. Pages 42 and 206 are scarily accurate, eh-
394: "Sais-tu ce qui ferait immensΓ©ment plaisir, ma petite-fille?"
=> "Do you know what would be greatly my pleasure, my little girl?" β *sniff* I LOVE YOU GRANDMA or wait, or am I the grandmaβ FUTURE ME YEEEE (I mean I do hope so a happy future and this book is exactly the cozy vibes!)

112: " Bold and intelligent" - sorry but there's no conversation in that page, so that's the only trait mentioned, but still it doesn't fit meπ
206 : " that's good " - welp that feels like a love life prediction π
394: " Desire, like a single spark" - welp that goes well with 112 i guess π©·π«Άπ»

206- "I am too fat for such fly-walks" (XD ???)
My book doesnt have a 394 so ill leave it off
@katbelleinthedark
I was asked to do it with the only book I have on hand, International Humanitarian Law (Crawford, E., and Pert, A., Cambridge 2015).
17- first word is what your friends call you behind your back
aspects
42- third full sentence describes your life right now
Page 42 only has bibliography for footnotes. That is actually accurate, I'm all research.
67- random thingy for you somewhere on the page
"Non-international armed conflicts β civil wars β were illegal rebellions against legitimate and sovereign authorities."
111- last sentence is something from your life
"Attempts to protect individuals might well prove to be at the expense of the equally legitimate protection of the State."
Bashir v Garak ethical discourse be like.
112- first thing a character says describes you
There are no characters in this book so I'll just give the first full sentence of a quotation:
"There was also a risk of ordinary criminals being encouraged to give themselves a semblance of organization as a pretext for claiming the benefit of the Convention, representing their crimes as βacts of warβ in order to escape punishment for them."
206- first or second full sentence describes your love life
"Ultimately, the asserted inapplicability of even the most basic provisions of the Conventions β Common Article 3 β was rejected by the US Supreme Court."
My love life was declared invalid. Which is valid in and of itself.
394- first thing a character says describes you
Again, no characters so I'll just give the first quote:
"from a strictly medical standpoint it seems impossible at the present stage of medical knowledge to objectively define suffering or to give absolute values permitting comparisons between human individuals."
@afoxnamedmulder I'm sure you have cool books lying around.

Me if they made rewatching The Wire illegal
As my friend's 5yo kid said at the school gate on his first day: "They'll never take me alive!"
while jamming my entire body between two closing elevator doors today, i was met with wide eyes, and i thought to myself "this probably looks frightening to people that don't have a thorough technical understanding of how elevators work and the history behind why they are so insanely safe"
and then i remembered the story of the tenured civil engineering professor who, with a running start, would leap and throw himself full-force at skyscraper windows in order to demonstrate their structural properties, until one day the window popped out of the frame, unbroken of course, and he fell to his death
it was a lawyer but yes it was exactly as described
The story of Garry Hoy is unfortunately really funny because most engineers are flabbergasted by his behavior and more or less like "we have no idea why he thought this was a good idea, windows don't have allowances for that behavior" so it's not even like he was as educated or safe as OP, man was just constantly risking death until he got it.
