In the wake of the events of outlaw life looks pretty wholesome, after fighting off a dozen hostiles and almost destroying a safe house, Sam and Bucky make it to the hard part: talking about their feelings.

The drive to the new safe house is uneventful, and after the evening they've had, Sam can't be anything but grateful for it. Natasha is waiting up for them when they arrive, giving each of them a once-over to check for injuries and having a rushed, whispered debrief just inside the door. They're all aware of Jack asleep in his car seat and Steve sprawled out on the floor beside him, apparently too tired to have made it the extra six inches to the couch.

"The man handled HYDRA with no problems, but one single bedtime with Jack and I think he's going to need a full week to recover," Natasha explains, lips twitching with a held-back laugh.

Sam can't help it; he draws Nat to his side and hugs her tightly, the relief of survival finally settling over him. "Thank you for getting him out of there," he says, around a sudden lump in his throat. "I don't know what we would've done if—"

"You don't have to know, because it didn't happen," she says gently. Then, with a smile quirking up the corner of her mouth: "We have plenty of disasters to plan for. You can let this one go."

He looks over at Bucky, who seems to have forgotten himself entirely, crouched beside Jack's carseat and watching his chest rise and fall with tiny breaths like it's something miraculous. "Easier said than done," he murmurs. "But I'll try."
