i know the way people talk about their pets now is probably how we’ve been doing it for all of history. a cat owner in ancient rome saw their cat lounging on the dining pillows and commented “he thinks himself to be the senator claudius 🤣”
A warning: I am about to earnestly talk about Harry Potter. If you follow me, you should already know that I don't stand for JKR's bigotry and am usually in the "let's just not give it any attention" camp. But I've been thinking lately about culture, and how those books affected the last couple generations, so please bear with me while I work this out on paper.
I read a bit of a book a while back that was meant to be a chapter-by-chapter guide to writing a novel, using the first HP book as an example. I didn't read very much of it, but even just from one chapter, I came away with a revelation: the reason people find the Harry Potter books so compelling and hard to put down is because each chapter resolves one mystery while introducing another. You're constantly getting the satisfaction of "solving" a puzzle, and you're also constantly intrigued by the next big question. Who is this character, what does this word mean, what does this object do - really simple questions that drag you forward as a reader.
But it's made me think a lot recently because I've been exploring algorithmic content more than I ever did before - watching Instagram reels, scrolling my reddit feed - and I've noticed that it provides a very similar feedback loop. Content will start with the creator introducing intrigue, clickbait titles or "watch til the end!" videos. It pulls you in with a mystery. In my case, a lot of the time the question is "is this worth my time?" which feels like a really silly thing to investigate over and over...but you do get hooked. The tiktok brainrot or whatever you want to call it - that impulse to move on to the next, to get another hit of whatever satisfaction or lack thereof you get from that question-and-answer cycle.
I think it would be a reach at best and conspiratorial thinking at worst to say that the format and success of the Harry Potter books actually paved the way for the later massive success of short-form content. But I would be very interested to see how the psychology compares. I remember staying up all night after a midnight book release, knowing I should sleep, barely able to keep my eyes open from exhaustion, but I just had to read one more chapter. And I have noticed that same feeling watching fucking...cat rescue reels on instagram.
Something else notable about Harry Potter is that it's basically a treasure trove for consumerism. So many named products, naturally when the books got big and the movies came out, there had to be actual chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts and butterbeer, not to mention wands and broomsticks and Hogwarts House attire... All things Harry buys within the first few chapters of the first book! In fact, the first thing he does after finding out he's a wizard is go shopping! And now we're navigating this world of hidden and hyper-visible ads and product placement... Like I said, I think it would be a reach to say that the one led to the other. But they feel related, linked by a common culture of consumerism if not direct cause-and-effect.
I know this is all a bit of a mess. I guess what I'm saying is that I can see how a society that embraced Harry Potter so wholeheartedly would naturally become a society that "consumes content."
Every time you go in a public place and something ISN’T disgusting it’s because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground it’s because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.

"i do not dream of labour" is one of the worst pseudo-marxist taglines that western leftists have co-opted because when you ask them what they do dream of, they say traveling, studying, and creating art. broski, who's flying the plane to take you to prague? who's the security at the library with the texts you're studying? who are the clerks in the museum showcasing your art? like bro, you do dream of labour. you just dream of someone else doing it so you don't have to! you merely want to outsource the labour and make it invisible.
all movies are for children because the moving image is inherently juvenile. to be entertained by it even moreso
Random tumblr blog roleplays as a philosopher. Shocks the masses by using big words just to say they think theyre better than you because you watch movies. WHHAAAAT?
thats right
the biggest word in this post is “entertained”
GLASSES vol.3
I should find a name for this project
why is ut always "being fat puts pressure on ur joints" but never "being skinny makes u more vulnerable to joint/bone injury" like lets be real im not playing this game with u where u get to pretend u know anything about medicine much less my personal case . u are going to have things happen to u and ur body no matter what size u are and pretending fat people are somehow the only people who can possibly sustain weight related injuries PISSES ME OFF . be fucking serious
people give me shit like "you wouldn't have such severely impaired mobility if you weren't so incredibly fat" like nice try fucker i lost my mobility when i was thin and fit and then i got fat when i could no longer walk, you know fuck all about me.

☀ cross stitch of a cat , which is about 1000 years old !
A textile fragment was found in Peru. It belongs to the Chimu or Chancay culture (pre-Columbian era X - XV centuries)
The thing with amateur local theater is it is almost always bad BUT keeping it alive is the most important thing
The joys of artistic expression cannot be limited to talented people everybody needs it to survive
This is such a hilarious take we should give untalented people who make bad art money you know just because guys
Exactly. Glad you understand 💗
good art grows from the soil of bad art, but also bad art justifies itself. it's still art

Risencrantz and Grindenstern
If u want to write a story about a character that’s just you but hotter with a dark twisted backstory and magical powers and a pet falcon or something, I think u should just go ahead and do that. Who’s gonna stop you? The government?? Fuck the police.
What if someone barges in, points at said character and scream, “Mary Sue!”
Tell them to come back with a warrant
This post came across my dash again and now I am having an absolute blast with self insert hotter me that gets the girls and guys everywhere.

I recently gave in and wrote the most ridiculous, nonsensical, self-indulgent fic that I’ve ever conceived of.
I had a lot of fun doing it and it almost immediately became one of the most popular things I’ve ever written.
