ur actually a bad person and a terrible human being for shaving ur legs, is that what u wanna hear
i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me

unfortunate truth of reality is that oftentimes 15 year olds will say/do/believe some stupid bullshit because they are 15 but telling them that they believe that because they are 15 is probably the most counterproductive thing in the entire universe
i remember being 15 and wanting literally nothing more than to be taken seriously and listened to and every thought and feeling i had was dismissed because i was a hormonal teenager. i was well aware at that point that a lot of the things i felt were probably because i was a kid, but that didnt make any of it less real, and being dismissed because of my age 1. did not help 2. did not make me feel better 3. made me angry at and untrustworthy of adults because they refused to listen to me. teenagers are people. kids are people. one of the only major things separating them from adults are experience and wisdom. they have like. you know. interiority
like in YOUR mind you may think youre being helpful by going 'well you're a kid, its not really a big deal, youre okay, youll get over it' but that does not register as "helpful affirmation that everything will turn out fine and the only reason im upset is because of something out of my control so its better to just try and come to terms with it" it registers as 'adult dismissing my real tangible problems and sadness and anger because of my age and inadvertently calling me stupid'
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

I understand the urge to comment on recent trends in which people seem to want increasingly sanitized media compared to the recent past, but when you say things like "people used to just shrug and move on when there were books and movies that made them uncomfortable" it's like...well. actually people used to convict artists of obscenity in a court of law.

Is there a regional dish specific to the region you live in or grew up in that you particularly like?
Yes
No
thereâs a post about xwp that explains why Xena and Gabs are canon and I like it a lot and all, but it says that if it werenât for Callisto killing Perdicas Xena and Gabrielle wouldnât be together and Iâm like⌠do you guys really believe that? Like REALLY?
because Iâm 100% sure that that marriage wouldnât last 2 months, Gabrielle never wanted to stay in one place with a dude, have a big happy farming family and be the wife tm, thatâs not what she wants, thatâs not who she is, that is the life she is avoiding in SoTP. Gabrielle (as RenĂŠe herself said) was looking for her soulmate in the early seasons, but that soulmate isnât Perdicas, I donât even believe she loved him in a romantic way, she would realize that and eventually leave him to be with Xena again
like, even in WFC where both Xena and Gabrielle have their âperfect lifesâ Gabrielle is not married, she is a famous playwright and lives on an island, far away from potadeia, and in the commentary from that ep Rob asks RenĂŠe if she thinks that Gabrielle would eventually marry Perdicas in that timeline (had she not found Xena) and she said she wouldnât, because what Gabrielle really craves is a life of adventure, and that is something only Xena could give her. (btw Rob agreed with her soâŚ)
anyway the point of this post is: Callisto killing Perdicas only made Gabs go back to Xena earlier than she would have if Perdicas had lived
I fully agree with this and thatâs the only reason I didnât reblog that (still very well made and good!) post. Also itâs hard to justify a bad writing choice as being in character as well- the whole point of that plot was to try to bring a little darkness to Gabrielle anyway so I have a hard time even thinking of it as canon?? If that makes sense. I always tried to imagine that she was possibly intimidated by the darkness in Xena and her enormity of feeling for her and so she felt attracted to the idea of Perdicas briefly because she thought she could fix him in a way she couldnt âfixâ Xena. Or because he needed her and she thought Xena didnât. But yeah, I mean, she left Potadeia and her engagement to him for a reason and I guarantee that if he hadnât died, she would literally have left him the next episode.
Also I know there are some differences of opinion on âwhenâ Xe&Gabs went canon and I donât think of it before the s3 rift personally- I always picture it around/after OAAA, not during s2, but itâs all valid interpretations, just not mine.
My take on her choice to marry Perdicas is similar (almost the same tbh) to yours, I think that she thought that being with him was a âway outâ of the violence that she dislikes so much but is still willing to face bc of Xena. Thereâs also the fact that she might have been scared of her feelings for Xena like you pointed out (letâs be honest she is head over hells in love with her by that point of s2) so she convinced herself that the love she felt for Perdicas was romantic and that he was the one for her, it was easy and safe, and she was scared. I also think that Xenaâs pep talk to her about following her heart may have made her change her mind about marrying Perdicas, she was very quick to tell Xena that she didnât want to marry him in the beggining of the ep, she must have thought that there was no way Xena reciprocated her feelings and that he needed her while Xena did not (like you said)
I used to headcanon that they got together after the quest but I was rewatching some of s2 eps lately and now it looks more like mutual pinning to me, after the quest theyâre like in this weird area where neither of them wants to take the first step (because theyâre afraid) so things are a bit ambiguous. So as of now I also think it was after OAAA
thereâs one thing Iâll never understand about the return of callisto though, and itâs that kiss on gabrielleâs wedding, I mean it was the worst moment they could have picked and it was confusing, I can understand in a âthey were overcome by their feelingsâ way I guess
If I may, this is how I make sense of that whole thing.Â
First, I think she felt guilty. From her point-of-view, if she had never left the village in the first place, Perdicus wouldnât have left to become a soldier. He wouldnât have killed anyone. And when he has a breakdown in the fight, she feels responsible. And that ends up being what makes her decide to marry him.
Gabrielle had this need to be needed. And sheâs like 19-20 at this point, filled with ideas of how the world should be. Perdicus knew about Gabrielleâs hopes and dreams. Even her idealism. Thereâs no way that he didnât.Â
Perdicus was playing into her need to be needed. The guilt she felt over leaving him and what happened to him afterwards. And I think, in her mind, Perdicus became a pseudo-Xena. But one she feels like maybe she can âfixâ in a way she canât with Xena.Â
Her feelings for Xena was probably confusing her at this point and maybe she felt like Xena didnât feel the same. And went where she knew she was wanted. Because Perdicus keeps telling her that he needs and wants her. Her talk with Xena always felt like she was trying to get Xena to speak up. Tell her that she wants her around. But Xena never does. Instead Xena steps aside and reassures Gabrielle that she will be fine.Â
Again from Gabrielleâs POV, there was one person who openly stated that he loved, needed and wanted her. And another person who said that she would be fine without her (even if thatâs not what Xena says).Â
How Gabrielle acts after he proposes is very interesting. He asks her to marry him and the first thing she does is look at Xena. When Xena asks her what sheâs going to tell him, she immediately says that her answer is going to be no. Even during the wedding, she focuses more on Xena than Perdicus. Then the wedding night? Whereâs she worried about Xena? So much that Perdicus notices and brings it up? Its pretty obvious where Gabrielleâs mind was most of the time.Â
I do think that Gabrielle cared for Perdicus. Maybe even loved him, but she wasnât in love with him. Â In her talk with Xena, she talks about how he is the only one, besides Xena, that she feels so comfortable around. And she calls him sensitive and kind (which is a switch from the dull and stupid she called him in Sins of the Past). So I think she may even have wanted to be in love with him. but she just wasnât. Â
And, from a storytelling POV, this was one way to âageâ Gabrielle. Make her more mature and grow as a character. Her own beliefs is being tested here. The first time we see Callisto, Xena ended up being tormented by her guilt. And Gabrielle tells her that the cycle of hate can only be broken through love and forgiveness.Â
The next time we see Callisto, its Gabrielle herself whoâs being tested. The rage Gabrielle felt over Perdicus death wasnât just grief over the death of someone she cared about. But her guilt. Again, if Gabrielle hadnât left the village, Perdicus would never have been there for Callisto to kill. And suddenly she and Xena switch roles. With her being the one tormented with guilt and rage. And Xena being the one trying to help. Â For Gabrielleâs growth as a character, something like this was needed.Â
After Xena died in the Greater Good, she kissed Gabrielle (albeit through Autolycus) but still. They must have stumbled around the fact of reciprocal feelings, so when Perdicus showed up it complicated things. Gabrielle at first said no to the marriage preposal, but I think she was curious. Gabrielle subconsciously (or not) wanted to make sure that spending her life with Xena was what she really wanted. So she tried the opposite. It was necessary to have poor old Perd come back in order to satisfy Gabrielleâs lingering doubts. This made her completely committed to Xena. Perd was critical to her character development, and however rash it was depicted, it exemplified the true irrationality of human nature.
Had an anon ask about this. So reblogging this post.Â
Reblogging for the Xena discourse cuz it takes me backâŚ
