stolen off instagram but i laughed so hard when i saw this
reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time is so funny bc Anne is primarily a sweet, eager, earnest, dramatic, imaginative child whoās taking the world with open arms and loving life, and also sheās trying to explode Gilbert Blythe with her mind
the older I get, the more I observe that a good chunk of society's functioning depends on the goodwill and free time of unmarried single people who work quietly in the background giving their heart and soul to unglamorous causes

My Infinite List of Favourite Films āĀ The Young Victoria
The Young Victoria is a 2009 British-American period film directed by Jean-Marc VallĆ©e and written by Julian Fellowes, a dramatization based on the turbulent first years of Queen Victoriaās life and reign, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
WAKE UP DEAD MAN : A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (2025), dir. Rian Johnson
Maybe it's naive of me, but whenever I see portraits like this, with just a father and daughter, it restores my faith in humanity a little. Because people seem to love this idea that fathers never loved their daughters in the past and only saw them as bargaining chips for marriage or whatever, but look at the guy in the first portrait on the left, he loves that little girl! And the dad trying to do his work while his daughter bothers him with an Old Timey Barbie. The man teaching his daughter geography, his expression is so soft! The way the man in the last portrait holds the little girl's hand! And none of these are incidental, these aren't photographs, someone (probably the father) paid good money and sat down for hours so that they could have a painting of themselves and their daughter. Probably because they loved their daughter.
From left to right: 1795 MichaŠJerzy Mniszech with his daughter Elżbieta - Marcello Bacciarelli; Christopher Anstey and his daughter Mary Ann by William Hoare 1776; A Musician and His Daughter by Thomas de Keyser 1629; The Geography Lesson (Portrait of Monsieur G. and His Daughter), 1812; Jean-baptiste Isabey And His Daughter; Portrait of a Young Girl and Older Man by William Harrison Scarborough
(this is probably somewhat related to my other favourite genre of painting, Husband With Multiple Kids Making Come Hither Eyes At His Wife)
oh I love those! People being people is one of my favourite kinds of paintings and an important reminder that people in past times were not all that different. There were dads who loved their daughters fiercely. There were fathers who happily looked after their babies too. The German reformer Philip Melanchton for example had a cradle in his office. His wife was busy organising a household for 20 people- she was out and about, he mostly worked in his office, it made sense for him to look after their babies too babies while she dropped by at snack time.
in fact often if it was kind of safe dads had the babies in their workshops for just that reason as we can see in these paintings:
The left is āthe busy fatherā by Theodore Weber, the right one is āAt the china repairerās ā by Wenzel Tornoe. All dads who are actively involved in childcare and a painter who thought it was a cute topic rather than anything ridiculous.
I raise you:
First Lesson by Akseli Gallen-KallelaĀ (1865 - 1931)
Un Coup De Main (The Helping Hand) by Ćmile RenoufĀ (1845 ā 1894)
Italian Winegrower And His Daughter by Francesco BarattaĀ (1590-1666)
ā If the meds were switched, then when I got them mixed up, I⦠I accidentally switched them back, so⦠I gave Harlan⦠ā The correct doses, yes. But not accidentally.
KNIVES OUT (2019) dir. Rian Johnson
I love this moment, not just because of the twist, but also because Marta has been dying the whole movie with not only fear and grief, but guilt at having caused the death of her patient, her friend.
For Benoit to take the time to reassure that this was not her fault, in way that is so kind and so clear, was lovely.
āYou are a good nurse.ā You can tell when he says that the he truly understands what is paining her the most. Just beautiful.
I have so much love for this film, and for the moment following this where Benoit tells her that, if Harlan had listened to her, he would still be alive. The blame is taken from her, in the kindest possible way, by someone she trusts. After all the goalpost moving and āah, gotcha!ā and obsession with spoilers in cinema over the last decade, with characterisation abandoned and plotlines left unresolved, knives out is a kind film. It isnāt obsessed with tricking you or catching you out, just wants you along for the ride
I love Benoit Blanc in this scene so much. I mean, heās a great character throughout the film, but this was the moment I thought,Ā āI will watch as many movies about this character as Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig choose to make.āĀ
I am so sick of the trend of making intelligent male characters callous. And despite his veneer of slow Southern affability, Benoit Blanc is almost diabolically clever. So throughout the movie, I assumed he was toying with Marta, enjoying her discomfort because he found her suspicious. I thought he was another brilliant, heartless detective in the BBC Sherlock vein. But look at him in this scene. He practically has tears in his eyes because heās so moved by Martaās goodness, and I love him. I love this movie. I canāt wait for the sequels.
#he loves Marta! #like YES FINE he knew from the beginning she was involved lol but also #he knew from the beginning she didnāt kill anybody #heās like YOUāRE THE ONLY BITCH HERE I RESPECT

I need not tell you that since we left, all my thoughts have been with you at Windsor, and that your image fills my whole soul. Even in my dreams I never imagined that I should find so much love on earth,Ā How that moment shines for me still when I was close to you, with your hand in mine.

I totally forgot you go here.
Exactly 250 years ago today, during a particularly harsh Hampshire winter, the seventh of eight children was born into the family of a local clergyman. The name of George and Cassandra's daughter was not officially recorded until the following April, owing to the conditions... but from this obscure start, she would grow up to become one of the most beloved authors of all time. So universally read, that her works have never been out of print; a phenomenally talented pioneer who, despite such scant formal education, used her incredible powers of observation and understanding of the various quirks of human nature to bring to life, as she sat at her twelve sided writing desk, a cast of captivating characters which continue to delight.
It was at this desk, in the cottage which her brother had procured for her, that she wove intricate story threads that ensure her novels are endlessly readable and timeless... hence why they are still being enjoyed and discussed after so much time has elapsed.
Although, in so many ways, she remains an enigma, with so little facts known about her life... we all feel like we 'know' her and have an idea of who Jane Austen is in our heads. That speaks volumes about her talent.
Our world is barely recognisable to the one she inhabited, but Jane Austen captured the fundamental essence of human nature in the writing she managed over the course of her tragically short life, and that is why we continue to delight in her works. In that sense, she lives forever.
Happy 250th Birthday, Jane. Thank you for all of the delight you've brought to successive generations of readers from all walks of life. I cannot imagine my life without your novels... and I'm certainly glad that I don't have to!
A watercolour by Cassandra Austen from 1804, believed to be of her sister Jane.
