I am Arista Holmes. A writer in her thirties & an indie author currently working on my debut series, The Fey Touched Trilogy. Book one, Changeling, is available now: www.books2read.com/Fey-Touched-Changeling
My nameâs Ari and Iâm an independant author of fantasy novels.
I live in the south-east of England, near the coast, with my demon of a cat, and my mum (Who is two parts flat-mate, and one part alpha-reader!).
When Iâm not writing, or drowning myself in coffee, Iâm probably gaming or trying to resurrect my high school sewing skills to make my own clothes. Making my own clothes is a relatively new venture, but something Iâve always wanted to do. So, itâs a work in progress, but I have hope!

Rumours & Reputation
This is a stand alone, adult, Grimdark Romantasy.
This project is still firmly in the outlining phase.
The Fellfire Volumes are a Grimdark Romantasy series, and also a co-write project with my best friend, @faelanvance. Since it's a co-write project, we have a shared blog @fellfire-volumes.
At the moment we anticipate the series being about 6-8 books.
The Chronicles of Verald
My most intimidating project to date. I anticipate this epic romantasy to be about 10-books long, but I've also not allowed myself to sit down and full outline this one just yet because of how huge I anticipate it being.
There's a powerful female lead, a morally grey MMC romance, and a love story that spans a lifetime... or two.

Hiii I know we have curses like "Rot & Termintes" for bad things, but what are some exclamations/oaths in the fey world for good things?
Hello!
So, fun worldbuilding fact, all my fey curses evolved from me typing something and then backspacing while muttering to myself "they wouldn't say it like that..."
So a lot of the fey curses became almost direct translations for phrases I thought wouldn't come naturally to them.
Fey // English
Squirrel shit = Shit
Got rot = go to hell
What the rot? = What the hell?
Damp-rot = Hellfire
Rot and Termites! = Hell and Damnation
Fire Ants! = Bloody Hell!
Rim of the realm = ends of the earth
With that in mind, thinking of a joyful exclamation of the top of my head is a little more difficult that I'd anticipated Lol
But maybe something like
By the realm, that's amazing! = My god, that's amazing!
Thank the realm! = Thank god
I legitimately can't think of another "good" exclamation right now, but if you have something specific in mind, I'd be happy to 'translate' lol.

"With what money, Lizzy?" Booker prompted, and she shot him a glare.
"I have gems to trade, of course. I'm not a complete idiot."
"Did you fail the class on the mortal realm, by any chance?"
"Why?" she asked sharply, coming to an abrupt stop, her suspicion rising at the amusement in Booker's voice.
You should be starting a recipe book. I don't give a shit if you're only 20-years-old. The modern web is rotting away bit by bit before our very eyes. You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. Trust me, looking for a recipe only to find out it's been wiped off the internet is so fucking sad. I've learned my lesson one too many times.
I'm still using a recipe book that belonged to my grandmother. It fell apart a few years ago, and my mum carefully took each page, put them into sleeves and now they live in a big black binder.
And at the back of the binder are recipes we've found online and liked. Ones we've tweaked to our personal taste.
I don't have to remember which website I found them on, or worry that they'll be taken down, or even if the original poster "updates" the recipe in a way I don't like. I have MY version, in hardcopy.
If your business can only be reached and all info about it only be accessed via Facebook or Instagram, know that it isnât reachable or accessible AT ALL.
The whole metaverse can no longer be properly viewed without an account and I am definitely not making one just to see your contact info or opening hours.
Get a fucking WEBSITE. It can be just a static landing page with the relevant information. But get off the metaverse!
The number of times I want to show my brother, who doesn't have any social media, something funny... And I have to track down as source or link that isn't Facebook, Instagram, threads, or twitter, is becoming ridiculous.
Anyway. If you Google Arista Holmes, my website is usually one of the top 3-5 results, because OP is right. Social media locking down access points is becoming more and more common.

[id. A twitter post by @/Bennieeexyz
Jury duty letter came addressed to my cat.
Not a mistake. "Felix Martinez" - that's his full name according to his vet records.
My last name. His first name. Somehow he's a registered voter now.
Called the county clerk.
Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty.
Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons?
Me: Yes, but he's a cat.
Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county?
Me: He's a legal cat.
Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption.
Me: He can't file anything. He has paws.
Clerk: You can file on his behalf.
Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat."
Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons."
Me: What's the medical reason?
Clerk: He's a cat.
Me: That's not a medical condition.
Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving.
Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later.
"Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement."
Took the letter to my vet.
Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty.
Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty?
Me: Excellent question. No good answer.
Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten.
Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve?
Vet: On what grounds?
Me: He's a cat.
Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings."
Me: Perfect.
Sent it in. Got another rejection.
"Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court."
My roommate thought this was hilarious.
Roommate: Felix is going to jail.
Me: This is serious.
Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens.
Decided that was actually the only option left.
Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters.
Checked in at the courthouse.
Clerk: Name?
Me: Felix Martinez.
Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix?
Me: Yes.
Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat.
Me: I've been saying that for six weeks.
Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption?
Me: I filed three. All rejected.
Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.
Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation?
Me: Twice.
Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this.
Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me.
Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote?
Me: You tell me.
Supervisor: This is a data error.
Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out.
They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience.
Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry.
Me: Appreciate it.
Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted?
Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats.
Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card.
For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was.
Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud.
Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent.
Roommate: That's what they all say.
Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now.
Fitting end to his legal career.

some highlights from my writing seminar with honestly one of my favourite authors of all time who shall remain nameless bc i dont want her to know i was spilling her secrets online
The first trick is to detach yourself from your idea. You donât have just one novel inside you, and itâs not a big deal if you donât finish this novel.
She was skeptical of the common advice âjust write!!1!â - she talked about how long ideas for her most popular novels were marinating inside her before she properly wrote them
As a continuation of that, she was a big believer in knowing what you want to write before you write it. Not what youâre going to write, what you want to write.Â
The first thing she decides about a novel is what the mood is going to be, and this informs every other decision (e.g. the mood for Shiver was bittersweet)
Ideas should be personal, specific, exciting and they should exclude secondary sources. A personal idea isnât necessarily autobiographical (which should be avoided), but it speaks to your emotional truth.Â
She said she had been read Ronsey fanfiction and she couldnât view her car in the same way since.Â
Story is the thing that seems most important to reader but is most changeable to the author - story is subservient to your mood and your message. Change what you like in the plot as long as your book retains its sense of self.
Story is conflict, exploration and change. A good story has active tension -the characters want something, instead of just wanting something not to happen (e.g. wanting to kill an enemy instead of simply defending a stronghold against an enemy)Â
A story needs to have a concrete end, something to be done.Â
Satisfaction is important - deliver what you promise to the reader. The other shoe has to drop. Ronan Lynch doesnât ever talk about his feelings, so its rewarding when he does.Â
Earn your emotional moments (she threw shade at Fantastic Beasts lmao)
Forcing a character to be passive is dissatisfying to the reader.Â
Characters are products of their environments, consistent/predictable, nuanced and specific, moving the plot, and subservient to other story elements.Â
She always starts with tropes for ensemble casts like sitcoms. Helpful for building good character dynamics.
Write scenes with characters saying explicitly what theyâre thinking and then go back and make them talk like real people in the edit.Â
An action can also prove what theyâre thinking, instead of making them say it or another character guess it (e.g. Ronan punching a wall).Â
Move the readerâs emotional furniture around without them noticing.Â
All her books follow the three act structure. Established normal -> inciting incident -> character makes an Active Decision -> fun and games -> escalation -> darkest moment -> climax.Â
Promise what youâre going to do in the first five pages.Â
Read your book out loud. Record yourself reading it.Â
If you have writerâs block, itâs because youâve stopped writing the book you want to write. She likes to delete everything sheâs written until she gets back to a point where she knew she was writing what she wanted to write, and then carrying on from there.Â
Hype people up for your original writing project (no fanfiction please- it's a wonderful medium but not the focus of this blog post) or work in progress by giving us some juicy details!
It's time for Poetry Week my doves!
TODAY'S QUESTION:
What kind of idea immediately becomes a poem for you, rather than an essay or story?
My poems, when they come to me, usually come *fully* formed.
At the very least, I have 2 verses or so that just pop into my head, ready to go.
And I tend to retain them really well. In the sense that I can quote them from memory years after "writing them" or, more accurately, thinking of them.
I can't prove it because if I type it, someone will say I just typed it, or copied it, but poetry's a weird one for me like that.
Most recently, I DREAMT a poem. Which was even weirder for me, personally, because generally speaking I don't remember my dreams. I close my eyes, I open them again when my alarm goes off.

Update!
Hello, hello!
It's been, literally, two months since I did a Milwordy update! Darkling's Pre-launch, Launch, and immediate Post-Launch honestly just kept me so busy I had to pull back on my social media stuff to avoid burnout.
It also means I did no writing, but it is what it is, because Darkling is now out in the world, semi-successfully! I'm still fighting with Bookvault over some printing issues on the hardcover, and no one signed up for the giveaway, but otherwise it went as smoothly as I could have hoped.
And the first ARC reader reviews have been utterly lovely! I'm just thrilled it's out, and people have been enjoying this next stage of the adventure.
But July 1st took us into Q3 of 2026! So I took the opportunity to update all my data tracking spreadsheets.
I'm the first to admit the writing this year has not gone as I planned, or hoped. On the flip side, I self edited, pro edited, and self published a whole ass book so I'm not complaining.
But when I re-evaluated what to do in Q3 and Q4, realistically, my overall goal for 2026 has simply had to take another hit. I'm now hoping/aiming for about 200k. Most of which I'd like to have happen before December.
February, March, and April I totalled around 13k.
As for July, I've started work on continuing Fey Touched, book three of my debut trilogy. The plan is to focus on that entirely for Q3 and based on how writing Books 1 and 2 went, I anticipate the wordcount to sit somewhere between Changeling and Darkling, so about 125-126k. As an estimate.
And we'll just see what happens. Life has a way of lifing, afterall, and a huge motivation for me to do this Milwordy Rebel experiment was to see how much I could write in a year, with other life events getting in the way.
I didn't plan on having to come off my meds for a week once a quarter. I didn't plan on the book launch stopping my writing, mostly, for the first six months. But this kind of trial and track method was how I found out sprints worked for me, and how to catch myself before I hit burnout... so every piece of information I can gather, I consider a success.
Even if it's not going quite the way I hoped, or planned lol.
So. In a perfect world, I'd like to finish my first draft of Fey Touched this Quarter. I'll be happy with this year. And I'll work with whatever happens moving forward lol.
But speaking of Fey Touched, a drafting update!
Anyone who has picked up Darkling will know that Chapter One was written in April and submitted to my Editor because it's included in the back of Darkling as a preview of what's to come!
I also had some pieces of Chapters 2 and 3 written, because they were originally one chapter, before I split them up and changed some POV's.
July 1st-3rd, I went back over my outline to give myself a refresh. I'd rewritten it after completing Darkling both to adjust for plot changes, and to make sure any/all of my dangling plot threads get addressed and tied up in the final book, so I just read my way through it, and today I sat down and wrote the next 1,365 words.
Which brings the manuscript total to 5,465.
The last act of a story is always my favourite to write, and I've got this weird little anticipatory flutter of excitement about Fey Touched that makes me hopeful I'm going to feel the same way about the final book in the series ^_^
Accountability Partners & Their Updates!
@pertinax--loculos's most recent update.
Speaking of treating Milwordy Rebels as a habit/discovery tool, it's great to see you've identified something like jumping projects to address!
I actively can't switch projects, or I find the threads get tangled up in my head, but I have found that if I get a new idea that won't leave me alone, I'll give myself a week to outline it, and then set it aside ready to work on.... later lol.
On the flip side, this is how I have outlines for 19 books AFTER the Fey Touched Trilogy, soooo... I don't know how much that actually 'helps'.
@the-inkwell-variable's most recent update.
You have had a STRESSFUL few months hun, I hope things have been picking up for you and your partner!
Scrolling through your blog to find the last Milwordy update, I've been reading your "how to fail a field practicum" snippets, and colour me intrigued! Can't go wrong with a vampire and a slow burn! (She says, being completely biased!)
# my favourite part about this post # is that nowhere does it say to reblog this # but weâre all reblogging it # because if we have to suffer # so do other writers

These dudes are fucking legit. Â They donât just show up one day in court, either, they actually make friends with the kids and let them know they have a support system and that there are people in the world who care about them and will always have their back. Â And less important, but also cool, is that the few times a couple of them have come into my cafe, theyâve been super friendly and polite and when I told one of the guys that I noticed his Bikers Against Child Abuse patch and wanted him to know how awesome I thought he was because of it, he got kind of shy and blushed and said, âThe kids are the awesome ones, we just let them know theyâre allowed to be brave.â
The source is long, but so, so good. These men and women are available in 36 states, 24 hours a day to stand guard at home, in court, at school, even if the child has a nightmare. Many of them are survivors of childhood abuse as well, and know what itâs like to feel scared and alone.
In court that day, the judge asked the boy, âAre you afraid?â No, the boy said.
Pipes says the judge seemed surprised, and asked, âWhy not?â
The boy glanced at Pipes and the other bikers sitting in the front row, two more standing on each side of the courtroom door, and told the judge, âBecause my friends are scarier than he is.â
Bikers Against Child Abuse was founded in 1995 by a Native American child psychologist whose ride name is Chief, when he came across a young boy who had been subjected to extreme abuse and was too afraid to leave his house. He called the boy to reach out to him, but the only thing that seemed to interest the child was Chiefâs bike. Soon, some 20 bikers went to the boyâs neighborhood and were able to draw him out of his house for the first time in weeks.
Chiefâs thesis was that a child who has been abused by an adult can benefit psychologically from the presence of even more intimidating adults that they know are on their side. âWhen we tell a child they donât have to be afraid, they believe us,â Arizona biker Pipes told azcentral.com. âWhen we tell them we will be there for them, they believe us.â
( Article)
My parents are a part of this organization and they are metal af
They go on runs to protect the child if they feel even the slightest threatened no matter where. If the child needs them to go on vacation with them, they do. Bikers come from across the nation to watch over and take shifts for these kids. And the best part is once youâre adopted into this family as a BACA kid, youâre always one. Even when youâre 40 and the perp gets released from jail, theyâll come meet with you and find your best options for avoiding the person and maintaining the life youâve built for yourself. Once a BACA child, always a BACA child. In Florida, thereâs 100% rate for identifying the perp based on the childâs testimony. Why? Because BACA stands with the child and supports the child so they feel comfortable enough to point out their attacker.
Whatâs better than a badass biker gang being on your side???
NATIVE AMERICAN CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST WHO IS A BIKER AND NAMED HIMSELF CHIEF HELL YES IâM HERE FOR THAT AND BIKERS BEING BAD ASS TO PROTECT KIDS. HELL YEAH.
Hey folks, it talks about this in the article but its not mentioned in this post, BACA is a 501 Š (3) charity that depends in part on donations to help pay for stuff like gas for their bikes. If you want to help, consider donating.Â
Guys? This post changed my life. I saw this post. Forever ago. And thought it was only in america⌠and wished desperately that they could help me. But then I saw it again, during a bad episode, and checked their site. They arenât just in the USA
Theyâre in Canada as well and probably other countries. I met and talked with a native guy who runs the place near me. His name is Shaman. I got in, and Iâm considered a BACA child now. Despite being 17, turning 18 when I talked to them. They spent time with me when my abuser was over, they gave me therapy resources. They give you something called a âlevel 1Ⲡwhere they go to your house with as many bikers as they can, i shit you not a solid 20-40 bikers came from even out of province, and met me. I got to choose my biker name and I got a vest with patches on it and my name on it. They all hugged a Teddybear before giving it to me, and told me if I ever felt the BACA bear was running out of love, to give them a call and theyâd refill it for me, and then I got a ride on one of their bikes. Just a day or so ago I went to an annual party with them and they we ate food one of them cooked and had a lot of laughs.Â
Iâve never felt as loved as I did being a part of the BACA family. They also gave me dog tags with the names, and phone numbers of my 2 workers. So I can call them whenever I feel scared.Â
BACA is an absolutely wonderful group that will do everything in itâs power to help any child whos been abused.Â
And it doesnât end when youâre 18 either. As long as you get in contact/get your level 1 before youâre 18? youâre ALWAYS a BACA kid. Iâm 18 now and they still invite me to parties, ask me if Iâm okay, and are there for me. Theyâre still trying to find me resources for therapy.Â
BACA has changed my fucking life.Â
I hope you all can read this, and reblog it knowing from someone who fucking been with them, that they are absolutely amazing.Â
Had seen this before, but never realised that this is on an international level - thereâs even a contact address close to where I live (in Germany), very cool (though hoping the only use Iâll ever have to make of it is for donations) â¤
