Monster Monday : Kavians!
Let’s take a look at the main monsters in my series: Kavians.
They’re rabid cousins of vampires… much less responsive to negotiation!
Once a vampire drinks toxic human blood, it’s already too late. Some resist the change a little longer than others, but eventually… they snap.
The first sign a vampire has taken human blood? They want more.
One meal hooks them, and soon any resistance they have crumbles. Until they drink from another. And another.
Even if they don’t transform immediately, subtle symptoms begin to show. Things that Kavian hunters know to watch for.
A vampire craving more blood than usual? That’s a red flag. Even if it’s not the toxic human blood, the thirst nags at them constantly.
Their eyes start to water, a sheen of glistening moisture like someone who is older, or has an irritant in them recently.
Their skin itches. They rub their hands together, scratch at their arms, pick at their fingers.
And overall, they get jumpy. Twitchy. Restless.
Loud noises, sudden movements, anything too sharp or fast, and they’re on edge, almost like they are expecting something to go wrong.
Eventually, the full transformation is triggered, and the first thing to go is their mind.
All higher cognitive abilities are lost. They fall back on pure survival instincts, driven to feed on anything they can; Human, vampires, but predominently fey.
The magic in fey blood calls to kavians, and they’re drawn to them.
Since they gorge on blood, they are usually stronger, faster, and heal more quickly than their vampire counterparts.
Don’t let their staggering, stumbling movements fool you! A wandering kavian is a different beast to one that has caught your scent trail!
Unlike vampires, however, kavians are sensitive to sunlight! While it doesn’t kill them, it does burn and they do their best to avoid it.
The only thing stronger than their need to feed, is their desire to survive, so if they are losing a fight they will often turn and flee.
Within a few hours, the transformation is complete. Their bodies wither into skeletal-like proportions, and the skin takes on a drawn, waxy look.
The first two knuckles of their fingers shrink almost to the bone and harden, forming claw-like appendages.
Their eyes go wide and roll wildly, drawn to sudden movement and loud noises. Anything that bleeds becomes a target, and once they catch a scent, they hunt relentlessly.
But even in their frenzy, survival comes first.
The only way to take down a Kavian is exsanguination, which is why kavian hunters predominantly carry a sharp bladed weapon of some kind.
They are far too dangerous to leave alive, and with no known cure for Kavianism, there’s no second chances.
They are too dangerous to cage, and they heal too quickly to merely incapacitate.
It’s a kill or be killed world inside the pages of the Fey Touched Trilogy.
Do you think you’d be able to recognise, and defeat, a Kavian?
