Goodbye is a beautiful contraction of the old English blessing “God be with ye.”
In the 16th century, people parted with the full phrase “God be with ye,” a heartfelt prayer for the traveler’s safety. Over time, through casual speech and lazy tongues, it was clipped and blurred:
God be with ye → Godbwye → Goodbye
The shift from “God” to “good” was influenced by similar phrases already in use—good morning, good night, good day—which gradually pulled the word into its modern, secular form.
So the next time you casually toss out a “goodbye,” know that you’re echoing a 400-year-old blessing, a quiet wish that God, or goodness, would travel with the person leaving your side. 🕊️
