like the betrayal’s always going to be worse if they cared about you and it didn’t matter. someone discards you because they didn’t give a shit, then you can be angry about that, you can feel vindicated in that, you can get over it. but if they can look you in the eyes and say “I love you. I would make the same choice again.” You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.
“I thought they cared about me, but they were lying this whole time.” <- tired. boring. removes all the nuance of this relationship to make it easier to move on from.

I've been reading and rereading Victoria Goddard's "Hands of the Emperor" and "At the Feet of the Sun" for months.
Needless to say, I'm absolutely obsessed with these masterpieces.

#in my experience the tipping point isn't the preserved grace of god but - well. when you start branching out into other food cultures. #suddenly you've got to source the grace of god and also the mercy of allah and also a jewish conception of repentance #that's really only sold at small local grocers. and then you're trying to translate websites written in bengali or cantonese #and attempting to figure out whether you can use butter instead of ghee to achieve dharma. #don't even get me into woks vs. censers. Spoilers for At The Feet Of The Sun
I have a headcanon that whatever it is that is happening with the Nijani police service was started by the Red Company. Maybe not directly, but I imagine that because the protests in Nijan are against a corrupt aristocrat and he is exactly someone who RC would hate, they might have caused some chaos when visiting Nijan. Maybe they exposed some of the duke's (or his predecessor's) more egregious secrets. Or maybe it was even more indirect and they just inspired someone to stand up to authority for once and that person later decided to make it their life's mission to fight against corruption.
I just love the idea of Fitzroy having to deal with the mess he created, despite still believing in everything he said then.
