Anne Carson, Plainwater: Essays and Poetry
Worldbuilders naming towns: I named this town Elygweâmeth which means âWhere the Dearly Beloved King died next to his Loverâ in the language I invented and also a combination of the Old English word for diamonds and the Maori word for apples since thatâs their main exports
People in real life naming towns: I named this town Big Falls cause big fall there
me poring over a fantasy map: Shit I already used that name for a town, I canât use it again, thatâs such sloppy worldbuilding
real life maps: There are six rivers in Britain called the River Avon, which means River River, because when the Romans asked the Celts âwhat is that?â they replied âa river?â and the Romans nodded and jotted it down
Terry Pratchett:
The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called â in the local language â Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund. The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Donât Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool. Rainclouds clustered around the bald heights of Mt. Oolskunrahod (âWho is this Fool who does Not Know what a Mountain isâ)âŚ
hey good news thereâs an entire Wikipedia page devoted to this and itâs hilarious
Fun examples from the wiki:
Bredon Hill, England (Hill Hill Hill â Brythonic/Old English/Modern English); compare Bredon and Breedon on the Hill (Hill Hill on the Hill â Brythonic/Saxon/Modern English)[14]
Deschutes Falls, Tumwater, Washington (âFalls Falls, Falls, Washingtonâ â French and Chinuk Wawa)
BakkĂĄrholtsĂĄ in the Ălfus region of Iceland. The river was originally named BakkĂĄ, âBank Riverâ, and then a farm nearby was named BakkĂĄrholt, âBank River Hillâ. The river was then later renamed after the farm as BakkĂĄrholtsĂĄ, which translates to âBank River Hill Riverâ[4]
Lakeville Lake, Michigan, US â The village is Lakeville, the adjacent lake is Lakeville Lake.
Semerwater, sometimes Lake Semerwater, North Yorkshire, England. Â Semer is from Old English sĂŚ âlakeâ and mere âlakeâ, thus Lake Semerwater means âlake lake lake waterâ
Pendle Hill, Lancashire, England. (Hill Hill Hill) â âPenâ -(Cumbric language) âPendleâ by epenthesis and elision from âPen Hyllâ, the latter word being Old English for âhillâ.[3]
Pendleton, near Pendle Hill, Lancashire, England. (Hill Hill Town) or, possibly (Hill Hill Hill), taking the -ton as deriving from Old English dun as opposed to Old English tun.
Pendleton Hill, North Stonington, Connecticut. (Hill Hill Town Hill) or, possibly, (Hill Hill Hill Hill).
Street Road refers to two different highways in Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania Route 132 in Bucks County and Pennsylvania Route 926 in Chester County) â Two nearly synonymous English words. There is also a Street Road in Glastonbury, Somerset, England which leads towards the nearby town called Street. There is also a High Street Rd in Glen Waverley, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, which is a continuation of a street called High St.[3]
homestuck does a LOT to make character death painful even though almost none of the deaths are permanent (and even the permanent ones are eeeeh because of the dreambubbles) but i think it mostly boils down to pulling away from the traditional idea that the tragedy of death comes from losing a loved one/a life being cut short, and towards a very compelling idea of death as personal trauma
the dead arenât lost, and they can continue pursuing their ambitions and growing as people, but the tragedy is that they died at all, that they had to experience that violence and come to terms with existing in the amorphous semi-stasis of ghosts- or just keep living, knowing that they died
itâs not a major thematic thing and itâs communicated almost exclusively through art direction but itâs a very juicy idea that i really really likeÂ
Youâre so right. Death in Homestuck is less about what the people who mourn you have lost, more about what the character loses by dying.
Loss of innocence (surely nothing can hurt me), loss of control (this isnât how it was meant to go), and most cuttingly loss of relevance. The dead in the dreambubbles literally have no more role to play in the story.
But itâs also about acceptance. The dead learn and grow and have time to work on themselves. Thereâs something soft and sad about those who are dead but go on existing nonetheless.

In Chinese art, the Four Gentlemen or Four Noble Ones (Chinese: ĺĺĺ; pinyin: SĂŹ JĹŤnzÇ), literally meaning âFour Junziâ, is a collective term referring to four plants: the plum blossom, the orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum.
The Four Gentlemen have been used in Chinese painting since the time of the Song dynasty (960â1279) because of their refined beauty, and were later adopted elsewhere in East Asia by artists in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
As they represent the four different seasons (the plum blossom for winter, the orchid for spring, the bamboo for summer, and the chrysanthemum for autumn), the four are used to depict the unfolding of the seasons through the year.
-
The Three Friends of Winter (ĺ˛ĺŻä¸ĺ; Tuáşż hĂ n tam hᝯu; ě¸íěźě°; ćłĺŻä¸ĺ) is an art motif that comprises the pine, bamboo, and plum.Â
The Chinese celebrated the pine, bamboo and plum together, as they observed that these plants do not wither as the cold days deepen into the winter season unlike many other plants.
Known by the Chinese as the Three Friends of Winter, they later entered the conventions of East Asian culture. Together they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. They are highly regarded in Confucianism and as such represent the scholar-gentlemanâs ideal.
-
The Flowers of the Four Seasons (ĺĺŁĺčą; Tᝊ quĂ˝ danh hoa; ĺĺŁăŽčą) are a group of flowers found in Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese art and culture which represent the four seasons, consisting of the orchid (spring), the lotus (summer), the chrysanthemum (autumn) and the plum blossom (winter).Â
They contain three of the elements of the Four Gentlemen.

in ye olde china, people wore actual flowers as hair accessories, regardless of gender. this is chinese historical fashion
Canadaâs northernmost capital city, Iqaluit, briefly turned pink and purple on January 12th, 2016. A CBC meteorologist explained that the incident was most likely due to a phenomenon called light scattering, which is caused by the refraction of the setting sun on particles in the atmosphere. Neither of these two pictures have been edited.

wait so elves are about "lips struggling to shape language your parents lived," losing your tongue and losing your home as functions of the same processes. dwarves are orphans living among the graves of their ancestors in the titans that are their murdered parents. the qunari revere a sage who said you canât fight time because the harder you fight, the more quickly the sea will wear you away. god killed his wife and deserted you. this entire setting is about mourning
I love that phenomenon where ur talking to another neurodivergent person for the first time and u havenât quite grocked their flavor of brain yet and they havenât grocked yours and youâre both using your Acceptable Friendly Person Getting To Know You Script on each other but of course those scripts have been calibrated mainly for use with, like, normal people, so you just end up being like two conversational roombas bonking gently off one another like âhello fellow humanâ âhello fellow âhello fellow humanââ until you both at some point manage to adjust your programming and actually like, communicate
Itâs like when I was a kid I had two furbies and when you put them next to each other theyâd just natter nonsensically past one another for a bit and then at some point one would abruptly recognize the other with its furby sensor or w/e and it would shout âDANCE!â and the other one would flap its ears and reply âHEY, DANCEâ and then, in perfect unison, they would begin to rock back and forth while chanting âdoot doot doo doot doot dooâ
Itâs exactly like that. I love it. Crazy people are the best, we are super excellent, i love us, i love crazy ppl
I wrote this post in my head while having a major dissociative episode in the bathroom and its the best and truest thing Ive ever said

so was no one was gonna tell me that the painting saturn devouring his son was found painted directly onto the walls of the artistâs home after he died and that it may not even be depicting the greek legend, thatâs just the most common interpretation??????
hello????
Not only was it painted on the wall of his house, it was painted on the wall of his dinning room.
Like imagine you go over to your boy's house for dinner and that's across from you while you eat. Like would you say something or just
This is the painting is question by Francisco Goya. Not only was this painting found, but a series of 13 other disturbing pieces of art called his âBlack Paintingsâ. At this point in Goyaâs life he had lost his hearing (well most of it) and had moved into a villa where he became a recluse. This was directly after the Napoleonic wars. These paintings were never meant to be found. They were never commissioned and he solely made these for himself.
This is where they think each of those paintings was placed in the house.
What in the goddamn...?
tumblr finding out about fucked up art history is so fun to watch
hiya this might be a hot take but do not base your positions or morality on guilt. it can, will, and does make you defensive. base your opinions on compassion, reduce the harm you create, and do not spend forever agonizing about things you cannot change. worry about what you can do, care about others, and listen to new ideas and different people. if a person is criticizing something, try to figure out if its an action or an institution. if itâs an action, reflect on whether you participate in it. if its an institution that you are a part of, figure out how you can help to dismantle it. your guilt is unhelpful and worsens both your life and the help you give others, I say this from experience.

Locking your mentally ill wife in the uppermost room of your house, and then hiding her existence so you can attempt to marry your young governess? And youâre gaslighting the household whenever your wife breaks out to start fires in themiddle of the night? Talk about problem attic. :/
I was gonna say âwhat you think he had insurance???â but 1) at least in the early aughts to mid-teens, NY was one of the less excruciating states to get medicaid in, and 2) he was a minor and itâs a LOT easier to get medicaid for a minor, especially when said minorâs legal guardians are retirees on fixed incomes Iâd wager.
So yeah theyâre all just fuckin dumbasses! I love them.
This is why I think it would be peak comedy for the radioactive spider to be of a non-venomous species and for there to be a scene of a new Peter Parker/Spiderperson looking up the spiderâs features or posting a photo to an identification subbredit before being informed of the fact that nothing will happen
entemologist reddit: oh yeah, that oneâs venom isnât strong enough to cause anything other than a bit of localized pain at the bite site, no worries.
Peter Parker the next morning, stuck to his ceiling: Well someone fucking LIED!!!!
