Coyotes trying their damndest to get domesticated
Thoughts, in approximate order:
You know, given how C. lupus, C. lupus familiaris, and C. latrans can all create perfectly viable hybrids, and that the proto-dogs that domestic dogs descended from much more resembled coyotes than wolves, it's not really a surprise that some yotes are experimenting with domestication.
Goddamn that lady must be fucking shredded to be able to chase down a coyote through a swamp.
"Don't let wild animals into your house, you are not going to make Dogs 2.0, you're going to get injured and the animal killed." is probably obvious enough advice that I don't need to put it in the tags as a reminder.
...I know more than four people on this site that have poisoned themselves trying out 'foraging guides' they found online, two people IRL who tried to keep raccoons at pets, and have a family member who got hospitalized for Cat Scratch Fever after grabbing a feral cat bare-handed. This is apparently, not obvious enough.
Do Not Attempt To Domesticate Coyotes
hbo max blocks screenshots even when I use the snipping tool AND firefox AND ublock which is a fucking first. i will never understand streaming services blocking the ability to take screenshots thats literally free advertising for your show right there. HOW THE HELL IS SOMEBODY GONNA PIRATE YOUR SHOW THROUGH SCREENSHOTS. JACKASS
somewhere out there is a guy who meticulously takes screenshots of every individual frame of his favorite tv shows and then painstakingly etches each one onto a roll of film which he puts into his old timey projector and recreates the footage as a silent film with his own lavishly hand-lettered dialogue cards and original score that he plays on his upright piano and charges audiences one shiny penny a play. at last, big media has finally outsmarted ol' Zachary Zoetrope
PSA for everyone who doesn't know, explained simply
this is NOT because of blocking screenshots, it's because of HOW streaming sites use your computer's hardware to optimise performance, which means the thing rendering the video and the thing capturing your screen aren't the SAME thing. so they can't talk together.
you can fix this by going to your browser settings, searching for "hardware acceleration", and turning that off.
This also fixes screen sharing to other screens. It has been GODSEND
type this in the toolbar to find this setting in firefox: about:preferences#searchResults
ol' Zachary Zoetrope is back in business!
it’s been a few days and he loves it
Swarovski can continue to fuck off.
In 2021, Swarovski (the company that makes the very sparkly crystals you see in certain jewelry, on figure-skaters' twinkliest outfits, on red carpet dresses), decided they didn't want the grubby fingers of small-time jewelers, clothing designers and costumers and crafters on their shiny beads and rhinestones anymore. They decided to limit their sales to "luxury" and couture creators, not girls who sell stuff on Etsy. The tenor of their press release on the subject was snide and insulting. Resellers (like your favorite bead shop) would no longer be allowed to carry their product; the average Jane on the street would not be able to purchase them. You could only get them if you had an authorized business agreement that bound you to very strict brand behavior. And those of us who still had good stock of the crystals would no longer be "permitted" to use the brand's name in our listings for sale.
Every bead shop and craft supply place and many, many small clothing makers--wedding shops, prom and dancing dress suppliers, the sort of salt of the Earth mom and pop time machines of shops that are the backbone of the field--scrambled to find something that could replace them. The last of the stock dwindled quickly, all of us grabbing what we could get while there was any chance of it, and then it was gone and we no longer had any access.
I was Big Pissed about it at the time. It was just so goddamn stuck-up, when wholesalers and indie jewelers had made them so much money, when some people I knew--when *I!*--had been brand-loyal for decades. But with no recourse, everyone pivoted fairly quickly, most of us to Preciosa Crystals. Those are Czech, quite sparkly, and considerably less expensive than Swarovski. The faceting method they use is different, but not worse; any differences are hardly noticeable when you're seeing them as a hundred pinpoints of light.
Well, out of nowhere, Swarovski just dropped this: https://www.harmanbeads.com/swarovski-brand-policy-update
"Effective June 1, 2026, Swarovski updated the distribution and brand usage policies introduced in 2021. Businesses may now purchase Swarovski Crystals without signing a Brand Control Agreement, and Authorized Distribution Partners may once again sell Swarovski Crystals to resellers, including bead stores and online retailers. Businesses may also use the Swarovski brand name when following Swarovski’s Proper Use Guidelines. Designers, manufacturers, artists, brands, retailers, and resellers are now eligible to purchase Swarovski Crystals through authorized distribution channels."
They want us back. A lot of the companies who could have kept a brand relationship with them also have swapped to Preciosa, over the last half-decade, in solidarity with indie creators and out of a sour awareness that it could be them, next. And it doesn't hurt that Preciosa was able to expand their line quite a bit now that everyone who wanted sparkle had no choice but to go to them.
And I'm not seeing nearly anyone who intends to return. The feeling is, "Y'all told us to fuck off! Off we fucked! And now, that's what you can do, too!" I'm seeing a lot of "How many of us did you stab in the back?" comments from the people whose money they're hoping to attract.
And personally I'm sitting over here all rubby hands, mean snickering, because they really thought they were going to be able to outclimb the people who actually provided all their profits, and now here they are, hat in hand.
Hubris, nemesis. Glad to know about this so I don't buy Swarovski anything ever.
It's also worth reading the section in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swarovski titled "Involvement with Nazism".

A lot of criticism of delivery apps focuses on the fact that they offer convenience and variety, which I find much less compelling than criticizing the fact that the apps often send their contractors on fetch quests from Hell.
There are real labor problems here. Base pay is often insulting. Customer tips carry too much of the burden. Workers need better protections, more transparent algorithms, protection from arbitrary deactivation, and actual recourse when the app or a customer screws them over. Car-dependent delivery is also an environmental and infrastructural problem, though in a denser city I’d still be doing this work; I’d just be doing it by bike.
But when people talk about delivery work, I rarely see them talk to actual delivery workers. I see a lot of abstract arguments about convenience, consumer decadence, “hustle culture,” and internalized neoliberalism. Meanwhile, when I’m out working and waiting in restaurants for orders, the other Dashers I meet are usually people who only speak Spanish, people who read as neurodivergent, visibly physically disabled people, or some combination of the above.
I have not met this mythical Disco Elysium poor ultraliberal hustlegrinder-wannabe people seem to be arguing with. Maybe that archetype exists somewhere. If it exists among any kind of gig worker, it would probably be rideshare drivers. But most of what I see looks less like “rise and grind” and more like “this is one of the few forms of work available to people who need flexibility, low barriers to entry, limited managerial surveillance, or a way to work around language barriers, disability, burnout, chronic illnesses and injuries with symptoms that come and go unpredictably, caregiving, résumé gaps, or discrimination.”
That does not make the current system good. It means the current system is filling a real gap that a lot of supposedly better systems do not even acknowledge.
As a disabled person who is burnout-prone and demand-sensitive, contracting as a delivery driver has given me an unprecedented level of financial flexibility. I can work when I have capacity. I can stop when I’m deteriorating. I can build my day around my actual body instead of being trapped under a manager who thinks “reliable” means “able to perform the same way every day no matter what.” That matters. It does not cancel out the exploitation, but it is also not fake just because it is politically inconvenient.
And delivery itself is not some inherently decadent evil. Sometimes people live alone. Sometimes they are sick. Sometimes they are disabled, exhausted, overwhelmed, grieving, overloaded, or recovering from something else - perhaps the stress and fatigue induced by their own job. Sometimes they need medicine, groceries, or a meal that will actually unplug their sinuses instead of whatever generic community-care slop someone thinks they should be grateful for. Humans are allowed to need specificity. “Food” is not the same as “the food I can actually eat right now.”
A serious labor critique would ask how to make delivery work safer, better-paid, less tip-dependent, less car-dependent, less algorithmically punitive, and less precarious. It would ask what kinds of flexible, accessible work should exist for people who cannot thrive in conventional employment. It would ask how cities could support bike delivery, worker cooperatives, public infrastructure, and real protections without simply replacing one bad system with a moral sermon about how nobody should ever want takeout.
But a lot of the discourse does not do that. It treats convenience itself as suspicious. It treats wanting flexible work as false consciousness. It treats the needs of disabled people, immigrants, and other people who can't fit into traditional employment structures as details to be swept aside in favor of a cleaner political image.
I guess the opinions of delivery workers only count when they are politically convenient.

Reblogging again with tags a follower added because they are correct. No you are not insane for reading that deeply into the overall reaction to SU and im glad you said it.
This sort of problem runs deep and i see it fucking everywhere.
everyone did this with avatar aang the same day that finale came out. old heads remember
This scene- in which a pampered housecat beats the shit out of a digimon that has already digivolved and has energy attacks- implies that, were cats introduced to the Digital World, they would be invasive, species-destroying super predators like they are IRL. I hypothesize that this is what happened in our world, where cats were introduced to the Internet as Lol cats, dominating the Internet memetic ecosystem and preventing the formation of the Digital World seen in Digimon.
I've gone. Not one for goodbyes, I thought it best to slip out quietly. Love to you all, Giles.

lie to me
First season of FMA:B is actually unreasonably funny because every episode at the 2 minute mark Ed goes “remember Al we can’t let anyone know our bodies are metal and we committed human transmutation. Because the military will probably execute us” and then every episode at the 14 minute mark Ed is screaming at the top of his lungs about how he and Al are made of metal and committed human transmutation. And also the President of the Military is there smiling and nodding and not giving a fuck because Ed is the military’s specialist little boy and he’s expressly permitted to commit murder in the streets and do arson and treason and tax evasion if he’s got enough hands for it and that’s completely fine because, as previously stated, he’s their specialist little sacrifice boy.
And also the military already knows he committed human transmutation and they think that’s really really great. It’s their favorite Edward Elric fun fact.
@redrobin-detective it is in fact a really great subversion of the “teenage protagonist successfully has the Adult Institution scrambling and fumbling, due to his cunning teenage wiles.” Ed DOES fancy himself cunning, but he’s literally only getting away with this because Bradley Is Letting Him. For the first several seasons they’re just letting him.
In the arc leading up to the Promised Day when all cards are out on the table, adult military strategist Roy Mustang is leading a charge against the establishment while Ed has faked his death and gone into hiding as, genuinely, the only thing he’s capable of doing on his own as a naive and scared 16 year old just trying to survive.
'on his own' even then he's being babysat by two chimeras and a homunculus + prince having a custody dispute over a teenage body! And before then half the time Mustang is lobbing problems at Ed like enrichment in their enclosure, or Armstrong, Ross, Brosh and Hughes are keeping an eye on him - he is regularly on his own in the field or when he's going rogue to be a curious little shit, but there's very often the hand of an adult present! Even several! It takes a village to raise a smartass child soldier and his brother 💕
(It's also really fun once the gloves come off and Bradley goes 'okay your special little boy privileges are revoked. That includes you Mustang btw I'm taking your toys away'. Timeout for naughty disruptive scientist-magician-soldiers.)
I can't believe home depot literally produced a wildly successful science fiction musical and we all just pretend it didn't happen. on one hand yes it had a boring white guy main character but like.... home depot just... Made it? And it had shit ton of box office sales? and no one even talks about this. this is like avatar (2009) all over again
OK so. After a lot of frantic googling I realized this was all a dream. home depot did not in fact produce a wildly successful science fiction musical. I was on allergy meds and took a nap and my brain simply prophesized this. slightly disappointed because I wanted to watch it.

"it's just stress" oh thank god, it's just the silent killer that slowly kills you, perfectly harmless, no need to worry
actually, the central romance of Music Man makes more sense if Harold Hill is wildly desirable, floats from town to town selling the Brooklyn Bridge on the strength of his charisma and how much everyone wants to fuck him.
mostly because that means when he shows up in river city and hears that Marian the Librarian seduced a secure and permanent position out of the elderly town miser, he would think: ah, another creature like me.
(not that “sadder and wiser girl” isn’t a phenomenal song on its own, but it takes on a different tenor if it’s game recognizing game rather than HH just refusing to go after nice, church-going girls.)
plus, leaning into that characterization would mean that marian is sadder and wiser, did in fact befriend (or seduce) specifically to have access to books and then later, to keep accessing them; she’s a con man too, just on a lesser scale due to lack of opportunity.
romance between two people who think of sex as largely a way of getting what you want, except that one of them likes to read, and the other can play the piano by ear.
also….who are we kidding when it comes to her ‘‘little brother’‘ Winthrop.
#let’s all be honest: marian and her mother left to “help out a cousin in Chicago” and then came back with a baby #marian only ever referred to this baby as her brother. mrs. paroo only ever called him her son. #but if you were the family doctor. or maybe someone who knows a little bit about gestational math and menopausal women. #you might have some follow up questions. #anyway stay tuned for other hot takes about this american musical from the 1960s.
“What’s the other thing I’m entitled to know?”
[Harold Hill gazes meaningfully at Marian, then looks back to Winthrop]
“Well, the other thing’s none of your business, come to think of it.”

I forgot how much I love kaku just. immediately being 1000% down for being a giraffe. maybe some of it is fronting because fuck jabra but also he just loves giraffes!!
I do wish chopper had been there for any of this though because can you IMAGINE
jabra: lmao imagine not being a big and SCARY carnivore
chopper: *the only one who's Actually Lived In Nature* wait you think carnivores are scary
everyone: ...I mean ......yes???
chopper: *having war flashbacks to The Forest* no no no predators are lame, all they want is an easy kill, a big meal, and a long nap, they're just big lazy cowards
chopper: the scary ones are *shivers* herbivores
jabra: h-hey! that's not true! I'm a big scary wolf awooo. herbivores don't kill anything!
chopper: YOU HAVE NOT KNOWN FEAR UNTIL YOU'VE MADE EYE CONTACT WITH A MOOSE
kaku: I'm keeping this one
the way the women are designed in tristamp feels crazy to me. this is the fattest they can make miss melanie before they get scared.
they're so afraid of fat women the pregnant woman has to have this incredibly narrow pointy face to 'make up' for her belly (in a vacuum she's one of the best-looking women in stampede because she doesnt have that moeblob 'cutesiness' and is allowed to like, have a face)
milly cant have a boxy silhouette or loose clothing anymore because we have to emphasize womens hips and tiny waists and the presence of breasts,
and the same of course goes for rem and luida, the latter of which is so reduced to rem 2.0 that they even give her certain rem scenes because vash needs a supportive mommy and maternal women r all basically interchangeable right?
nevermind that i really thought by now we'd be over 'oddly sensual character who looks like a small child' instead of turning grown women into that, or how every time a womans around larger conflicts (i.e. confrontations of past crimes or threatening the lives of 400 odd people) get turned into scruffing a girl like a cat and holding her hostage (happens to jessica twice in two episodes. ok.) how are you even less feminist than the aggressively heteronormative '98 anime
