someday you may need to get to a Very Specific tree. You may need the leaves for an art project, for an identification guide, or for something else entirely.
There may be a small and narrow wetland separating you from that tree. that wetland may be a swamp, a fen, a bog, or something else entirely.
You may have forgotten your boots in the car. Or at your house. Or somewhere else entirely.
And you’re going to look at that tree, across the narrow wetland, and you’re standing there in your bare feet.
And you may think to yourself “the water probably isn’t deeper than my knees.”
And you may think to yourself “and the mud can’t smell that bad.”
And you may think to yourself “if I get a running start and cross quickly, I won’t sink too far.”
Or you may think all of these things at once.
And I want you to know.
You will be wrong.
And the water was waist deep.
And I smell terrible.
And boy did I ever sink.
on the UPSIDE, on the way back, I leapt halfway across, grabbed a small tree, and literally swung to the other side and I’m sure it looked really badass so ya win some ya lose some.
