When farmers grow the same crop too many years in a row, it can leave their soil depleted of minerals and other nutrients that are vital to the health of their fields.
To avoid this, farmers will often alternate the crops that they grow because some plants will use up different minerals (such as nitrogen) while other plants replenish those minerals. This process is known as “crop rotation.”
So the next time you find that you need to step away from a project to work on something else for a while, don’t beat yourself up for “quitting” that project. Give yourself permission to practice “mental crop rotation” to maintain a healthy brain field.
Because I’ve found that when that unnecessary guilt and pressure are removed from the process, a good mental crop rotation can help you feel more energized and invigorated than ever once you’re ready to rotate back to that project.
: A crucial part of crop rotation is that the field is let fallow sometimes. You plant what’s called a “cover crop”, which is something you don’t expect to harvest– it’s there for its roots to hold the soil in place, and often it’ll be what’s called a nitrogen-fixer, i.e. a plant that can pull nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil with its roots (but sometimes it won’t, sometimes it’s really just there to shelter the soil surface), and then you’ll till in that cover crop, or let the frost kill it and the stalks lie as mulch, and then you’ll rotate productive crops back into that field the next season.
It’s important, though, to understand that during the fallow period, no nutrients are removed from that ground, and nothing is expected of it. Whatever the land grows then, it keeps, and it gets tilled back in or decomposes in place, to return its energy to the earth.
We’re not allowed, in our current society, to just let our minds be fallow for a bit, to produce nothing for export, to make nothing that can be sold. But it’s part of good land stewardship, to give every field time when it doesn’t need to give you anything back.
So yes, grow and produce different things from time to time, rotate them around your mind and exercise different mental muscles, take different things from your creative processes, yes– but also, give yourself a fallow spell now and again, and let the field of your mind grow things for itself to keep, to break down and save for later.

Please make a post about the story of the RMS Carpathia, because it's something that's almost beyond belief and more people should know about it.
Carpathia received Titanic’s distress signal at 12:20am, April 15th, 1912. She was 58 miles away, a distance that absolutely could not be covered in less than four hours.
(Californian’s exact position at the time is…controversial. She was close enough to have helped. By all accounts she was close enough to see Titanic’s distress rockets. It’s uncertain to this day why her crew did not respond, or how many might not have been lost if she had been there. This is not the place for what-ifs. This is about what was done.)
Carpathia’s Captain Rostron had, yes, rolled out of bed instantly when woken by his radio operator, ordered his ship to Titanic’s aid and confirmed the signal before he was fully dressed. The man had never in his life responded to an emergency call. His goal tonight was to make sure nobody who heard that fact would ever believe it.
All of Carpathia’s lifeboats were swung out ready for deployment. Oil was set up to be poured off the side of the ship in case the sea turned choppy; oil would coat and calm the water near Carpathia if that happened, making it safer for lifeboats to draw up alongside her. He ordered lights to be rigged along the side of the ship so survivors could see it better, and had nets and ladders rigged along her sides ready to be dropped when they arrived, in order to let as many survivors as possible climb aboard at once.
I don’t know if his making provisions for there still being survivors in the water was optimism or not. I think he knew they were never going to get there in time for that. I think he did it anyway because, god, you have to hope.
Carpathia had three dining rooms, which were immediately converted into triage and first aid stations. Each had a doctor assigned to it. Hot soup, coffee, and tea were prepared in bulk in each dining room, and blankets and warm clothes were collected to be ready to hand out. By this time, many of the passengers were awake–prepping a ship for disaster relief isn’t quiet–and all of them stepped up to help, many donating their own clothes and blankets.
And then he did something I tend to refer to as diverting all power from life support.
Here’s the thing about steamships: They run on steam. Shocking, I know; but that steam powers everything on the ship, and right now, Carpathia needed power. So Rostron turned off hot water and central heating, which bled valuable steam power, to everywhere but the dining rooms–which, of course, were being used to make hot drinks and receive survivors. He woke up all the engineers, all the stokers and firemen, diverted all that steam back into the engines, and asked his ship to go as fast as she possibly could. And when she’d done that, he asked her to go faster.
I need you to understand that you simply can’t push a ship very far past its top speed. Pushing that much sheer tonnage through the water becomes harder with each extra knot past the speed it was designed for. Pushing a ship past its rated speed is not only reckless–it’s difficult to maneuver–but it puts an incredible amount of strain on the engines. Ships are not designed to exceed their top speed by even one knot. They can’t do it. It can’t be done.
Carpathia’s absolute do-or-die, the-engines-can’t-take-this-forever top speed was fourteen knots. Dodging icebergs, in the dark and the cold, surrounded by mist, she sustained a speed of almost seventeen and a half.
No one would have asked this of them. It wasn’t expected. They were almost sixty miles away, with icebergs in their path. They had a responsibility to respond; they did not have a responsibility to do the impossible and do it well. No one would have faulted them for taking more time to confirm the severity of the issue. No one would have blamed them for a slow and cautious approach. No one but themselves.
They damn near broke the laws of physics, galloping north headlong into the dark in the desperate hope that if they could shave an hour, half an hour, five minutes off their arrival time, maybe for one more person those five minutes would make the difference. I say: three people had died by the time they were lifted from the lifeboats. For all we know, in another hour it might have been more. I say they made all the difference in the world.
This ship and her crew received a message from a location they could not hope to reach in under four hours. Just barely over three hours later, they arrived at Titanic’s last known coordinates. Half an hour after that, at 4am, they would finally find the first of the lifeboats. it would take until 8:30 in the morning for the last survivor to be brought onboard. Passengers from Carpathia universally gave up their berths, staterooms, and clothing to the survivors, assisting the crew at every turn and sitting with the sobbing rescuees to offer whatever comfort they could.
In total, 705 people of Titanic’s original 2208 were brought onto Carpathia alive. No other ship would find survivors.
At 12:20am April 15th, 1912, there was a miracle on the North Atlantic. And it happened because a group of humans, some of them strangers, many of them only passengers on a small and unimpressive steam liner, looked at each other and decided: I cannot live with myself if I do anything less.
I think the least we can do is remember them for it.
You're not really supposed to say it this way, because its considered crass, but here in the US children are culturally and legally considered essentially the property of their parents.
Note that its considered more crass to point this out than it is to treat children as property in the first place.
So I will say, this does vary state by state. California is a state with a number of legal protections for children, especially teens, designed to safeguard their autonomy. It's inadequate for sure, but it's something.

Inspired by my walking past a home built in 1754 in my new neighborhood, which isn't even the oldest building in the city. As someone born and raised in the Western US (where we do have some very old buildings, contrary to popular belief, just not in the middle of most cities), it made me curious!
When was the oldest extant building you can reasonably walk to from your home built?
20th century
19th century
18th century
17th century
16th century
15th century
14th century
13th century
12th century
11th century
10th century or before
Remaining time: 18 hours 52 minutes
(Use your judgement for definitions of "extant," it doesn't have to be used for its original purpose but my intention is a building that could theoretically still be used, not just the remnants of one.)
I had to look it up but I can get to a 10th century church in about an hour walking normally. The most famous oldest building I can reasonably walk to is the St. Nikolai church - that's 12th century and a three hour walk.
fake relationship is such a good trope. they have to act in love and they are in love but they think the other isn’t in love. oscar. pulitzer. nobel prize
working with kids and one of them says “you know you eat 8 spiders a night on average right?” and another goes “no no no those statistics are actually skewed by people who like eat spiders recreationally for fun and stuff” and my head snapped up like a fucking sleeper agent

There's been a number of people reporting over on the AO3 subreddit that they're getting messages like this posted in the comments shortly after posting new fics.
The AO3 team are NEVER going to try and contact you about TOS violations via the comment section (or about anything else for that matter)
Don't click any links. Report the accounts involved (which might claim to be things like "LucySupport"), delete the message and move on.
Yes to most of this, but do NOT delete the comments if you're going to report! The AO3 team needs to be able to see the comments in order to take action against the spambot accounts.
HIIII so uhm I need to cope with smallville what are some of your favourite fix it fics pls 🙂↕️🙏🙏🙏
hi! happy to share. i'd argue almost every fic i've read so far has been a "fix it' in some way. so since i'm not sure what your definition of fix-it fic is, i went ahead and split them up into categories - hope some of these are what you're looking for!
canon divergent fics that branch off from and/or fix a specific event(s)/season in canon:
Identical Series by Lanning - Lex loses everything, and finds something better. (I love this series more than words can say. It is genuinely life altering) // ~400k words
Refracting Light by elandrialore - When Clark goes to see Lex after Unsafe to get their friendship back on track, he finds more than he was expecting. (there's a scene toward the end of this that is so perfect and I think about it all the time) // ~18k words
Contingencies by Xparrot - Lex, forced to his last resort, comes to the Kent home, and Clark must rise to the occasion, as he finds himself questioning his assumptions about his dying enemy. (season 6 fix-it. oh my god. not sure i'll ever recover. but like in a good way. mostly) // ~35k words
Haven by sabershadowkat - The day Lex had returned from the grave, alive and beautiful and whole, Clark had held him in his arms and had sworn that he'd never let anything happen to Lex again. He'd failed horrifically. (i'm including this because it's a post-asylum fix-it fic by definition but it's sort of like an entire original novel masquerading as a clex fic. it's a beautiful fic but if you're looking for a lot of clex content, this shouldn't be your first choice) // ~46k words
Sealed with a Kiss by laceymcbain - Pete: "We're standing in Lex's office with Lana serving coffee right outside and I'm waiting for you to kiss me so we can see if you poison me or not. That's weird, Clark--even by Smallville standards." (this is just silly and sweet and i love anything that lets me see early seasons lex being treated how he deserves) // ~29k words
Waiting for My Real Life to Begin by Xparrot - Clark runs home from the Talon; Lex is waiting for him. // (fix it after 5x02 Mortal) ~5k words
The Simple Truth of Skin by Thamiris - There are many ways to wield a hammer. (set after 1x12 leech) // ~8k words
From the Ruins by Bagheera - During "Zod", Clark and Lex accidentally switch bodies. (this felt very real but was also soft. i really wanted it to just keep going on forever) // ~16k words
Dreams of Dying by elandrialore - Set about a week after Bound. Clark dreams of what was, what is, and what can be, and chooses his path. Now he just has to convince everyone else that he's right. (this is a heavy read at points but clark reflects on how he treats lex which is always much appreciated) // ~18k words
Catharsis by arysteia - Aristotle says that tragedy purges the negative emotions of the audience. Can angsty porn purge the negative emotions of the Smallville audience? Let's give it a shot. Lex finally calls Clark on a few things. (the title says it all. if you, too, wish to strangle clark during parts of season 4, this fic will definitely be cathartic for you as well) // ~4k words
Memoria by ORiley42 - The memory meddling of "Memoria" ends with Lex and Clark being finally, totally honest with each other. (i literally will read anything to erase this episode from my memory - no pun intended) // ~10k words
Satisfied?! by twinsarein - Can anything survive the ashes of their friendship? (a very smutty fix-it to 5x02 Mortal; cw for sexual violence and dubious consent) // ~36k words
I Shatter by Slinkling - What if Clark wasn't such a coward at the end of "Shattered"? (first person lex pov, third person clark pov; i think the way they chose to write this is just really well done. this is also just much more satisfying than what actually happens at the end of shattered.) // ~8k words
Intruder by mskatej - Clark is in heat. Chaos ensues. (this fic is wild i don’t even know. but i feel like i should include it because it’s technically an early s6 fix it. i think? cw for cheating) // ~16k words
post-canon fix-it fics:
Locked Room Mystery by rivkat - President Luthor, due to threat of natural disaster, is stuck for hours with that annoyingly ethical reporter Clark Kent. Since Lex is smart and Clark is a crap liar, once they're alone in a room together, Lex figures out that Clark must know something about him pre-memory-loss. // ~6k words
Play Forgiveness by museaway - The call comes in when Clark is drunk on sleep and his face is buried deep in the pillow. "The President requires your assistance." // ~10k words
We got it started in the worst way by Eileen_Blazer - Shutting the door, Clark thinks: is that my kryptonite-laced demise in your pocket or are you just unhappy to see me? Because he doesn't know, really, if Lex is here to wax poetic about their past or to kill him. But either way– ; Or, Lex remembers. Clark always knew he would // ~3k words
Lost in Translation by rivkat - Your soulmate’s name is written on your arm. Reading it is one thing. Understanding it is another. (soulmate AU that weaves itself through canon starting in season one but finds its way to post-canon and settles there beautifully. this really is so well done. i read this after i answered the ask so im adding it after the fact bc its just that good and it needs to be here) // ~10k words
rift-less future fics that either ignore canon from a non-specific point or were written before the rift started and/or before the show ended:
Le Dormeur du Val by Pun - Lex takes in a weary Clark. (taken straight from my comment on the fic: this is exactly what i need in a fic. my favorite tropes. the yearning. the separation. coming back together. admitted long repressed feelings. oh this killed me in the best way.) // ~11k words
Long Time Coming by BewareTheIdes15 - “Yes, I’m in love with you,” Lex says, like he’s explaining that the Earth is round; like this is some baseline, inalienable fact that’s not irretrievably reorganizing Clark’s existence. “I’ve never seen any reason for that to be an impediment to our friendship.” (this is a perfect AU futurefic. the characters are somehow so spot on while still fitting into this softer version of the future. it’s just lovely to read and so enticing) // ~15k words
Three Impossible Things by seperis - Clark changes everything. (this fic is an emotional roller coaster i loved it so much) // ~32k words
The Milk and Cookies War by Punk - Lex Luthor's Penthouse for Wayward Boys. (basically, clark decides to seduce lex. this is just cute an fun) // ~6k words
Faking It by suzvoy - It's just as well they're best friends, really. (i just read this today instead of working lmao and it's cute and silly; fake dating) // ~21k words
Rainbow Sign by rivkat - Rainbows have nothing to hide. (this is a cute and soft read. clark is in college and has told everyone he has a boyfriend even though he doesn't) // ~9k words
string theory by spqr - “You have now reached sexual maturity," the AI says, cheerful. "Congratulations.” Clark, who’s twenty-six and likes to think he reached sexual maturity a while ago, just says, “Thanks.” (i'm not sure this should be included as a fix-it fic but i just think it's really cute and it fits into the riftless category. it's established relationship which i don't usually read. it's also mating cycles/in heat/alien biology smut if that's not your thing) // ~7k words
post-rift future fics with happy endings that either a) were written before the show ended so they don't reflect what we now know as canon, or b) chose to ignore the canon ending; these sometimes take inspiration from other superman/dc canon:
The Hinge Moment by tasabian - Superman has a bad day; Lex just happens to be there. (listen to me. this description does not even begin to do this fic justice. it will stay with me forever) // ~15k words
Yellow by rivkat - "A Kryptonian, huh? I knew this 'I'm the only one, I'm the only one' thing was just an attention-getter." (president lex gets abducted by aliens. and then you get trampled by more emotions imaginable. i also really enjoyed the AU take on the characters’ lives in this futurefic) // ~7k words
While They Do Dream Things True by thirteenthmoon - Lex falls under the effects of the Black Mercy plant, and dreams up a reality where he and Clark are married. Clark has to travel into his dreams to break him out of it. (a truly beautiful read; i *think* this falls under this category?) // ~7k words
Ulterior Motives by astolat - Everybody wants to rule the world. (this is just so *them* and feels real and right) // ~19k words
Risk Management by tasabian - A bad day for Metropolis reunites Clark and Lex. // ~7k words
Golden Rule by rivkat - Clark doesn't make the same mistake twice. (lex, who is clark's nemesis, loses his memory to before season 3. clark makes some choices) // ~13k words
Red Tulips by TheWhiteLily - Lex discovers that his feelings on the death of Superman are more mixed than he’d expected. This is unacceptable. And, because he is Lex, he has a plan. // ~4k words
iHero by iibnf - Bitten by a radioactive CD player, Lex gets super powers and just about everything he ever wanted, not that he'd ever admit he wanted what he gets. (it's just a good time) // ~81k words
Visions of a Different Future by meyari - Lex uses a device Tess created for destruction to create a new future for himself and Clark. All it took was a secret room, some strategic kryptonite and complete honesty. // ~7k words
Where I Can't Follow by SinnamonSpider - While the rest of the world mourns, Lex goes to work. (i think i have a thing for temporarily dead clark lol) // ~7k words
Forever by JusticePlague - Clark's concern was almost tangible. Lex just couldn't bring himself to think of him as Superman, right now, not after having that dream. Not even with that stupid 'S' plastered across his broad chest. ; Or. That time Lex was too tired to resist his baser desires. (porn with feelings) // ~4k words
Injustice by averaird - Lex Luthor rediscovers a few things about himself that he had hoped to forget. (i lovingly put in my bookmark: "lex takes the container exercise a bit too far" lmao) // ~20k words
Absent Limbs by tasabian - Lex is taken hostage by alien invaders; Clark and the Justice League work together to rescue him. // ~9k words
Reciprocation by P.L. Nunn - After Lex inadvertantly discovers Clark's powers, understandings are tentatively reached, outside problems inevitably arise and mutual satasfaction acheived. // ~67k words
please let me know if any of the links don't work. it's possible i pasted the wrong thing or something since i was going sort of fast. also let me know if you have any questions or are concerned about content warnings!

watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.
sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.
society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.
turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.
my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.
also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.
ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.
- I Want To Strangle Medical Fatphobia With My Bare Fucking Hands
- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.
Insurance companies are also really shitty about covering CPAP machines and will try to make you lease them for hundreds a month before you own one, and they reserve the right to repossess it if you don't wear it enough! But there are cheaper ways to own one ⤵️
💬 0 🔁 12 ❤️ 45 · Let's talk sleep apnea and cpaps · (I am a US American so mileage may vary)
Hey friends! If you get diagnosed with sleep
I went to a webinar about obesity in April. The scientist had collected historical data about weight and weight gain from the last 300 years.
His data showed that in the US the general public weight gain, started around the 1870s. And in Denmark in 1940s. (He had more data, but it was a Danish webinar.) His data also showed, that people who are considered fat or gain weight, on average consume the same amount of calories each day as leaner people. Not more.
This means the "obesity epidemic" started long before people became more sedentary and had more access to food. Weight is not about food. Weight is not about exercise and hard work.
His suggestion was that it is connected to electrical lightning of the home and city. Light pollution. Because that affect our circadian rhythm, and disturb our sleep.
We need more darkness. We need more sleep.
