something a lot of traditional artists don’t realize is how important it is to store your art in something acid-free, and it’s something I didn’t think about until I started working in a frame shop and saw all the damaged artwork people bring in.
Acid burn can take a couple decades to become obvious (a lot of the things I receive with bad acid burn are from 10+ years ago), so it doesn’t seem like a big deal until suddenly all your art is permanently stained yellow/brown and brittle. The major culprits are tape, mats, frames, newsprint paper, and CARDBOARD. If they aren’t ph neutral, they’re going to leech acid into your paper and discolor it.
you will not believe the amount of times I’ve opened up someone’s old matted art to find nasty crusty tape that’s left dark rectangles:
or pictures that have orange margins from where the mat laid against it:
Storing your art in cardboard long-term is setting it up to be brittle and gross in the future. Scotch masking tape is your art’s enemy.
Cotton is naturally acid-free, so it’s good to work with cotton art paper and mats. Most plastic sleeves are also acid-free. Sometimes acid-free options cost a bit more, but considering how dramatically it can affect your artwork, it can be quite worth it.
OKAY ACTUALLY PLEASE DONT DO THAT EITHER
Mats are actually REALLY good and important for preservation of artwork-- when they're actually made out of archival materials. All of the mats in the frame shop I work in are mostly acid-free save for the top color layer, but it also offers cotton RagMats that are closer to 100% acid free.
But beyond worrying about acid, mats are also really important for air flow! Ideally, you want two mat-widths of space between your art and your glass (which can also be achieved with plastic spacers that are applied directly to the glass). If your art touches the glass it can 1) create a pressure point on the glass where it's more likely to shatter and 2) can potentially cause moisture damage, can cause smudging if it's graphite or pastel, or it can even cause glossy photos and acrylic paintings to get stuck to the glass (you do not want it to get stuck to the glass. it will not come off. trust me. it will rip and you will be sad.)

You know what’s some crazy $hit?
This fabulous bitch
She makes a shit ton of poses (like 16,000 or some crazy nonsense). I used this lovely lady to draw so much as a teen. Whether it was some nerdy pose for my Mary Sue as fuck OCs
or for full on fight sequences
or for tragic deaths of my OCs in the arms of a totally OOC main protagonist.
this bitch hooked me up.
And with the wildest, craziest stuff that you could see in your head but had no way or resources to reasonably draw like
or this
or this
DUDE! INASNE SHIT!! So I was using her for a pose reference and decided, you know what, I owe this bitch some cash. Lemme dole it out for her. BUT then, I looked and saw she only has 286 fucking patrons!! This chick gives out free shit and spends countless hours arranging these shoots and setting this stuff up.
I’ll fork up the cash, SenshiStock. You’re worth it.
Check out this amazing woman’s stuff, and get knowledged: https://www.deviantart.com/senshistock
I have been following her for years on deviantart.
Highly reccomend checking her out. She’s the best. If I had any money to throw I’d throw it at her for providing such a big help in my life.
This hero doesn’t wear capes, she instead wears (and looks utterly flawless) in tank tops(?)
Interrupting my regular Star Wars BS to reblog this because @senshistock is amazing and beyond worth the follow and support! I first started using her refs gosh I want to say back in maybe 2008, and I’m happy to be a supporter of her over on Patreon. If you’re an artist please go find her stuff on all the platforms, you will not regret it!
Yessss, she is so awesome! Been following her for years. My favorite stock artist is jademacalla, who is, incidentally, in the last two images above. He has a lot of great angles, costumes, gear, etc! I love his hands, too.

YOUTUBE OCS VS PROFESSIONAL CHARACTER DESIGN by LavenderTowne
h-how does one draw clothes, mi madre? any tips? mine just looks flat lmao 😭
Hope this helps
1. Draw the body first.
2. Do the neckline and select points where the clothes will pull down from (gravity). The looser the clothing, the more gravity will pull down on it.
3. Scrunch where the clothing bends (joints, extra cloth). Basically, make a bunch of zig zags in the corners.

How do you do body proportions please help- (Great art BTW I love your Doctor Who art!!!)
Aaaa Thank you!! ;) and aghh uhh I don’t know.. I kind of use this classic proportion? Very roughly though, sometimes it turned out a bit weird and needs to be fixed later. I’m still learning about it too, proportions are super confusing to me and they has always been the thing I struggle with the most. I also use a lot of refs!
And, not sure if this help but I occasionally use this app called MagicPoser where you can make models and move them around. It’s a bit stiff and take too long to make but it help me grasp the basic shape/pose and shading, especially useful with multiple characters since I tend to mess up proportion in attempt for the characters to fit with each other
