we can hold both truths at once: that this was not good allyship, in fact it’s done harm, and that the backlash he is receiving is not due to his transgressions, but because he rejected the now popular, even socially demanded, blood libel and said, “I stand with the Jews.”

In January 2009, a judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court sentenced George O’Dowd to fifteen months in prison. The world knew him as Boy George. A jury had convicted him of falsely imprisoning Audun Carlsen, a Norwegian model he handcuffed to a wall fixture in his London flat. Carlsen told the court he wrenched the fixture loose to get free, then ran into the street in his underwear while the singer swung a metal chain at him. The judge called the act premeditated, callous and humiliating. Carlsen has said he was diagnosed with PTSD and spent a decade in therapy.

George served four months. Then British entertainment welcomed him home. He coached on The Voice UK for the BBC, then The Voice Australia. In 2022 he joined I’m a Celebrity, and when a few viewers objected, ITV issued a statement about spent convictions and kept filming. In 2024 he starred in Moulin Rouge on Broadway. This summer he was cast as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, sharing the role with Richard Armitage and Julian Clary. Opening night was set for August 3.

He never made it to the stage.

On July 26, he posted a song called “We Will Dance Again,” captioned with a single word: Shalom. The title is the phrase survivors of the Nova festival massacre made into a vow. The lyrics reject the word genocide and call the war what he believes it is: a war. They describe what happened to young women at Nova on October 7. They accuse fellow musicians of waving flags and following the herd, and they close with a plain declaration that he stands with the Jews.

The backlash took hours. Within four days, his manager announced he would no longer appear at the Palladium. The statement praised George for standing by his “personal convictions” and never named them. It did not have to. Everyone reading it knew which convictions were meant, because nothing else about the man had ever cost him a job.

His critics deserve one concession. George makes a poor martyr. His record is real, and his victim is real, and I hold no brief for him. The song itself is an awkward piece of work. He admitted he made it with AI, and joked that he would have struggled to write it with a human. If your complaint is that a pop icon outsourced his conscience to software, that complaint has merit. The sequence tells the truth anyway. Nobody organized to remove him from a stage over synthetic vocals. The campaign began when the words became clear, and the words were about Jews.

Here is what the timeline establishes, and it should unsettle you far more than one aging pop star’s career. A violent conviction was survivable. Pleading guilty to filing a false police report in New York, where officers found cocaine in his apartment, was survivable. Four decades of feuds and provocations were survivable. The industry priced all of it, paid it, and booked him again and again. One song of solidarity with Jews exceeded the budget in four days.

If George were the only data point, you could argue his history finally caught up with him. He is one of two.

In June, Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in a commercial for 51 Park, a luxury residential tower in Herzliya, a coastal city north of Tel Aviv. The ad was filmed in New York, and it contains no politics of any kind. The tower stands on undisputed ground in a wealthy beach town. She wakes up, goes for a run, and tells her driver the building she lives in is in Herzliya. For this, an influencer with 3.4 million followers renamed her “Gwynicide Paltrow,” and her Instagram flooded with accusations of complicity in genocide over an ad she never even posted herself. One celebrity asked publicly whether she was a genuinely nasty person or just stupid, and concluded she needed to be cancelled.

Her actual record is worth reviewing. Paltrow spent two decades selling pseudoscience through Goop, including a settlement with California prosecutors over unsupported health claims for jade eggs. She sat through a televised ski-crash trial. She has delivered enough out-of-touch moments to sustain a small meme economy. Through it all, the public response was mockery: parodies and jokes about kale. The first time in her adult life that she faced organized hatred, actual venom, demands for her erasure, was the moment she said the name of an Israeli city out loud.

Two celebrities, opposite profiles. One carries a conviction for chaining a man to a wall. The other’s worst offense is a rock crystal. One made an explicit political statement. The other made none at all. Both discovered the same tripwire in the same summer, and it had nothing to do with harm or guilt. Proximity to Jews was sufficient.

That is the finding, and it required no leaked memo to uncover. The enforcement mechanism published its own price list in real time. Assault, drugs, deception and quackery all sit in the forgivable column. Standing with Jews, or standing near them, sits alone in the other one.

The same runs in the opposite direction. In June, Prada named the rapper Saint Levant its global ambassador and pushed a campaign video to 33 million followers in which he wore a pendant of the land from the river to the sea with Israel removed from the outline. This is the same performer who stood on a stage in November 2024, days after mobs hunted Israeli soccer fans through the streets of Amsterdam, and thanked the attackers for taking care of business. A luxury house reviewed that record and saw the face of a brand. Then in November, Glamour crowned Ms. Rachel a Woman of the Year for her Gaza advocacy, and the room rose to its feet as she described the war with the exact word Boy George was pushed off a stage for refusing. Weeks earlier she had become a global ambassador for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. Her care for children in Gaza pushed her to such extreme that she repeats extreme anti-Jewish rhetoric in the name of Christianity. The asymmetry is still the story. One vocabulary earns ovations and ambassadorships. The other vocabulary earns an unlit theater.

I have documented this pattern from other angles, from the DJ hounded out of her own concert in France for being Jewish to the coordinated networks that manufacture outrage on demand. Boy George and Gwyneth Paltrow are useful because they remove every excuse. You cannot claim this is about accountability when the industry forgave the chain and punished the song.

September will bring the dates George was supposed to perform, and other artists will keep making the same calculation he made, weighing solidarity against a career. The evidence of what that costs is public now, and the score is easy to keep: which people face campaigns, and which never do, whatever they have done.

"dark money": "Dark money" technically refers to untraceable or difficult to trace political donations. AIPAC's donations are all out in the open. It does not in any way fit the literal definition of "dark money". What Mamdani appears to be saying here is that the money itself is "dark" or evil because AIPAC (associated with Israel and Jews) has (metaphorically) touched it.

"single goal, to preserve their power": Mamdani frames AIPAC as uninterested in specific policy or political changes--the usual reason that PACs exist. He accuses them instead of being interested in power for power's sake, which it will use to undermine the health of society. He implies a contrast with himself and the DSA, whose intentions are painted as good and pure and whose goals are implied to to hinge on creating specific political and policy changes, with any interest in gaining power merely a side effect or dirty necessity of achieving such goals. In other words, he is taking an organization that is doing the exact same things that his own organization is doing, and painting it as uniquely evil. Mamdani tends to reserve this kind of rhetoric for organizations associated with Israel and, by extension, Jews.

"turn us against each other"--this accusation makes little sense. AIPAC is an organization focused on American-Israeli relations. It has no interest in tearing apart American society. However, Jews have long been accused of trying to undermine the coherence and well-being of the societies in which they live. It is not a factual statement, but an accusation built on and promoting distrust and scapegoating of Jews.

"moral change"--this statement puts AIPAC in opposition to "moral change" and morality in general. It build on and feeds into centuries of Christian and Muslim antisemitism painting Jews as immoral, scheming, an operatives of the devil.

Okay, honey. But what action do you want them to take? Because you don't have to use the word "genocide" to get people to care about Palestinians or get their money to support humanitarian aid. We were doing that for years before y'all started using the word "genocide."

But claiming that Israel is intentionally butchering children and trying to wipe all Palestinians from the face of the Earth--can you guess what other kinds of actions that might invoke? I mean, if you are totally fine with telling people that Israelis are bloodthirsty monsters, and if you are also one of these ignorant people who thinks that all Israelis are Jews but STILL think you have a right to position yourself as an expert, you're basically saying that Jews are bloodthirsty monsters who like to kill children.

But since you involved yourself in this conversation, please have another look at your final paragraph: "the only solution to a genocide is offensive military action against the offender."

On October 7th, 2023, Hamas--an organization with a long history of calling for the genocide of Jews (I did not make this up, this is fact, if you don't believe me, please learn some Arabic and do some research) took an offensive military action against Israeli civilians with the explicit aim of destroying Israel. Your final paragraph justifies Israel's military actions against anyone engaging in genocidal acts--that is, acts intended to destroy Israel"s Jews because they are Jews or Druze because they are Druze or Baha'i because they are Baha'i, as well as to destroy the cultures of those people and their cultural artifacts--against it.

Because see, what we were doing was learning what makes something propaganda. We were looking at historical propaganda campaigns, and we were drawing parallels between them. We were, in short, learning to notice propaganda, and that knowledge is so, so important. So I am going to do a case study here. It’s one I’ve been wanting to do for a while, because the amount of propagandic rhetoric I see bouncing around is rising and rising and I want to explain how to see it.

I was riding a bus recently, late at night, staring vaguely at nothing, but as I looked around a little sticker across the aisle caught my eye. Israel murders children, it said, in big, bold Sharpie. Plastered on the wall of a public bus.

Well, dang, I thought.

This sticker, and every Instagram, Tumblr, or TikTok post that has said that same thing, is propaganda. Even setting aside the specifically antisemitic blood libel vibes (which are a huge part of this conversation), it is, in fact, one of the simplest and most overused propagandic messages in history. It is also incredibly effective. Because one of the things we were taught, in my propaganda class, is that one of the most effective messages for getting people to fall in line behind you is they’re coming for our children. Hands down among the most common and successful propaganda throughout history, right up there with they will destroy our culture and they will dishonor our women.

But, you say, but how can it be propaganda if it’s true? Israel has killed children in this war (as have all sides in all wars ever). How can it be propaganda to advocate for the safety of children? And that’s a hard question, but the assumption that it’s impossible is exactly why the propaganda works. So why is this sticker propaganda?

The main reason I would point to is wording. It is written as a sharp, short, and emotionally aggressive tagline. The word murder is a deeply loaded one, and its use here is designed to shut down any discussion. You read it and you feel sad, scared, angry. Next time you hear someone say Israel you hear this phrase, unbidden, in the back of your mind. It’s an unforgivable accusation. It primes you to believe the worst about the accused, no matter the context. It is made to get you on the side of the writer, and aim you at their enemy. That is propaganda.

It is possible to talk about the death of children in wartime without falling into the trap of propaganda. It’s just unfortunately very difficult to do in a meme, a tiktok, or a sticker on the bus. All these short- form content styles require the quickest, most enthralling version of whatever they are saying, and on topics like this that usually tumbles into propaganda-speak incredibly quickly. So next time you see something like this, consider what it’s trying to make you do. Is it thoughtful, calm language, trying to make you more informed? Or is it sharp, pithy, and feels like it’s trying to convince you to side with it against some dangerous Other? Because if it’s the second, chances are high you are running into propaganda.

“The Museum of Tolerance” is “colonial propaganda” because peace is actually the enemy.

Yes, invoking the legacy Esther- the legendary Jewish queen of Persia whose story takes place before Islam or Christianity even existed- is definitely meant to demonize Muslims.

It turns out that putting Shirel Haim Pour (Jewish Israeli who’s family made Aliyah from Iran and was killed on Oct 7th) next to Mahsa Amini (a Sunni Kurdish Iranian who was killed by the morality police in Iran) is not an effort to foster solidarity and empathy across religious and ethnic groups, but, in fact, a “deeply racist” piece of “colonialist propaganda.”

Muslim women in Iran might not require saving, but they would probably appreciate not be ignored in favor of your full throated support of “the axis of resistance.” Also, there are non-Muslim women (including Zoroastrian, Jewish, and Christian women) living in Iran and subject to theocratic laws of a religion they don’t even belong to.

Both the lion and the sun have been used in Persian culture for thousands of years. They’ve been on the Iranian flag for hundreds of years before the 1979 revolution.

-The Columbia chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine was shut down after an investigation into their funding under the Biden administration found that they were being partially funded by Hamas.

-This resulted in no arrests or expulsions, and the organization was allowed to rebrand as CUAD under the same leadership.

-Student organizers from the Columbia branches of SJP, CUAD, JVP, WoL, and other organizations are currently being sued in federal court for allegedly knowing about the Oct 7th terror attacks in advance.

-Court documents show that these student leaders had produced propaganda supporting the Oct 7th attacks before they had occurred, and were using Hamas's code name for the attacks before it was made public.

-THREE separate hostages have now gone on legal record stating that Columbia students were extensively coordinating with at least one member of Hamas who kept them captive, and that this member of Hamas told them that their coordination with Columbia University student leaders (and other student leaders) is/was extensive.

-The Columbia student defendants in this lawsuit have not denied that they coordinated with members of Hamas, only claiming that they were "unaware" he was a member of Hamas. This is despite the fact that the Hamas member who kept the hostages captive, Abdallah Aljamal, was completely open about his affiliation on social media.

This does not even scratch the surface of the raging antisemitism, overt Hamas support, and felony level hate crimes that Columbia University students have engaged in en mass over the past year and a half. It's also not even scratching the surface of the broader connections many of the parent organizations of Columbia "activist" branches have to terrorist organizations (nearly all of them have been caught funneling money into terrorist organizations.) This is just focusing on the direct involvement of Columbia student leaders specifically, with Hamas and the Oct 7th attacks.

Genuinely, what is going on right now? All of this is public information and yet it isn't being reported on at all? A lot of these students should be in federal prison, and yet they're not even being suspended, and the media consistently presents them as peaceful protesters who are being unfairly called antisemitic.

I have no reason to believe Hank Green personally knows about or agrees with JVP’s extreme pro-terror sympathies, or to distrust the sincerity of the Green brothers’ previous statements on the conflict—which, while often leaning in favor of Palestinian narratives over Israeli ones, have tended to be fairly mild & balanced in ways that do not in any way suggest the possibility for support of the terror ideology held by organizations like Hamas or PFLP.

However, the fact that Hank Green is colleagues with, and by all appearances personal friends with, members of an organization that does, and that they have been integrating into each other’s business ventures and repeatedly featuring each other in their respective projects over the past year or so, is concerning.

Especially when you consider that SciShow isn’t just entertainment that people watch in their freetime like Dimension20 or Game Changers; it’s a really helpful educational resource that teachers commonly use as supplemental material in high schools.

Because of this, there is a high likelihood that teachers will be introducing their students to Brennan Lee Mulligan—who has involved himself in an organization that promotes the literature & ideology of a terrorist organization—in, of all places, their Science classrooms. And while it’s unlikely that Mulligan will ever say anything truly worrisome in a SciShow video, a fair number of students will become followers and fans of his through SciShow (as has been the case for Hank & SciShow guests in the past), or through Hank directing them to DropOut to see his standup routine & other guest appearances, and then be directed through Brennan, or Ally, or whoever, to JVP & other extreme organizations.

I do not know what’s in the minds or hearts of anyone involved here, but what I am seeing is this:

an officially designated terrorist organization (PFLP) that helped Hamas carry out the largest mass-slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, and is still holding Jewish children hostage,

being held up as a “Revolutionary” template for “liberatory struggle” by the specific chapter (JVP LA) that multiple members of DropOut (Brennan, Izzy, Ally, possibly more) have promoted, shared propaganda from, and/or published photographic evidence of involvement in,

and Hank Green becoming increasingly involved with DropOut, including promoting & featuring the specific individuals involved in the PFLP-curious JVP LA

What I am seeing is a pipeline being built, little different than the alt-right pipeline (perhaps even less diffuse), which—regardless of the intentions or knowledge of all its participants—is funneling people towards the ideology of an officially designated terrorist organization involved in the worst massacre against the Jewish people since the Holocaust. That concerns me.

Verdict: Not Actually Jewish

(updated verdict after finding out about the “self-managed conversion” and “teacup mikvah”) Jewish, technically, and that "technically" is doing a lot of heavy lifting, and is actively debatable without access to a detailed breakdown of JVP’s actual membership rolls. 

In general summation, JVP is a far-left radical antizionist group that is headed by a few visibly antizionist Jews and whose membership rolls are either a strong minority or outright majority of non-Jews, based on variable statistics that they've released. Although they claim that the “majority of their members and staff are Jewish”, this seems to be both statistically unlikely and actively suspicious due to their noted tendency to instruct even non-Jewish members to speak #AsAJew on social media, and their instructions to do “self-managed conversions”.  However, due to their title, they are very popular with people who want a Jewish Stamp Of Approval for demonizing Israelis and Zionist Jews as a result. In effect, they are Jewish in the same way that people like Candace Owens and Hershel Walker are Black—as self-tokenizing minorities who throw the rest of their ethnic group under the bus in exchange for power and political access.

And despite the claims that they are “inspired by Jewish values and traditions” (as put on their website) and “oppose anti-Jewish hatred,” JVP routinely engages in antisemitic rhetoric, up to and including blood libel and antisemitic conspiracy theories, and acts as a shield against non-Jews who also engage in antisemitic rhetoric so long as the non-Jews in question remember to shout "For Palestine!" first. This is not an exaggeration. 

The primary example of their in-house antisemitic rhetoric is their "Deadly Exchange" program, where they explicitly and conspiratorially blame Israel as being responsible for American police brutality and militarization. However, for all of their fearmongering and blame-casting on the subject—as if American cops needed outside help in brutalizing minorities or gaining military-grade handmedowns from the Pentagon, both of which are explicit claims of the "Deadly Exchange" program—they have a hard time actually identifying specific deaths associated with the international training seminars they're holding up as responsible.

One of the the closest they've come to a specific allegation is claiming that "former St. Louis County police chief Timothy Fitch trained with the Israeli military three years before Michael Brown’s killing and the Ferguson uprising." (Note: this was in a video that appears to have since been made private.) But Darren Wilson worked for the Ferguson PD, not the St. Louis PD, and Fitch retired months before the killing. So he was in a completely different police department, and this is the closest JVP comes to pointing to specific deaths or acts of brutality that they blame on Israel. Everything else is literal fearmongering--up to and including the classic conspiratorial tropes of "secretive Jewish governmental influence".

JVP has also happily supported the words of white supremacists like Richard Spencer, taking his “You could say that I’m a white Zionist in the sense that I care about my people," statement at face value, using it as the basis for entire articles where they compared Zionism to White Supremacy as a deliberate misrepresentation of the ideology that is common on the extreme political Left (you can compare that treatment again with how Candace Owens treats the word "Woke" on the Right). Even when the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" march happened, JVP wasted no time in comparing Zionism with the very ideology fueling the people chanting "Jews Will Not Replace Us," saying that Zionism is "Jewish racial supremacy" and calling for a universal condemnation of the ideology as a form of White Supremacy... which was the exact sort of message that many of those same White Supremacists would have happily agreed with.  So JVP is essentially siding with literal White Supremacists,  even as they claim that "Jews are not the primary victims of White Supremacy."

JVP also engages in Holocaust revisionism, such as with this lovely quote from Cecilie Surasky, the deputy director of JVP, “I believe it is critical to situate the genocide of Jews in a broader context, and not as an exceptional, metaphysically unique event. Some 6 million Jews died, but another 5 million people were also targeted for annihilation.”

This is just straight revisionism of the entire Holocaust and the unique fixation the Nazis had on the Jews. Literally, even when they were losing, they were diverting resources from the war just to kill more Jews. Quote Hitler himself, "Jews must be prevented from intruding themselves among all the other nations as elements of internal disruption, under the mask of honest world-citizens, and thus gaining power over these nations." The very basis of the Nazi ideology paints Jews as an existential threat to the human race's peace and security—a far cry from JVP's claim that the Jewish suffering in the Holocaust wasn't unique or exceptional.

Additionally, JVP ignores or re-envisions Mizrachi Jewish history. They call the very term Mizrachi “Zionist rhetoric,” and refer to Mizrachi “immigrants,” (“Deadly Exchange,” pg. 16-17), and claim “the Israeli government facilitated a mass immigration of Mizrahim” (“Our Approach to Zionism”) as though those weren’t the direct result of the mass expulsion of and violence against Jews in MENA countries. These weren’t immigrants, these were refugees. 

And as for the question of “Are they Jewish?”, well...

Statistically, they are not representative of the Jewish population as a whole, 90% of whom identify as some degree of Zionist in the sense of “Supporting Jewish self-determination.”  One does not need to be Jewish to join JVP, as they proudly state on their website. Their membership rolls are also extremely obfuscated, and the fact that they encourage their followers, whether Jewish or not, to post and speak “as Jews” on social media makes it even more difficult to figure out what percentage of their membership is actually Jewish.  Furthermore, they have instructions for their members to engage in “self-conversions” that are not acceptable to Jewish law or tradition, and misuse/appropriate other sacred Jewish traditions to the point that “blasphemy” is an accurate description, with their instructions on the mikvah (a sacred bath) being outright offensive.  

(note that one has to be completely nude and bare of any adornment or makeup to use the mikvah, which is a pure pool of collected rainwater to be immersed in, for context on the above... misuse.  Trying to claim this as being “in line with sacred Jewish tradition” is like trying to claim to be Catholic while also saying that the Pope is the Antichrist and that using beer and a doughnut for the Eucharist is acceptable. It’s also telling that they straight up say they are “claiming” the practice as their own.

Furthermore, JVP has hosted panels on “antisemitism” in the past... headed by people who are not only not Jewish, but who have been credibly accused of antisemitism in the past.  

JVP has also endorsed The Mapping Project Boston, which was a Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) subsidiary, listing every “Zionist” organization in Boston, Mass. This included Jewish schools, elder homes, community centers, disability centers, and more; all of them painted with scary and misleading “links” to non-Jewish organizations to insinuate Jewish control of the state and city governments, invoking age-old antisemitic tropes of a conspiracy of Jews as they did so:

The Mapping Project also, and this is my personal favorite, accused Harvard University of doing “racist science” for engaging in archeological and genetic studies of Jews and Jewish history.  Tellingly, BDS actually disavowed The Mapping Project (albeit for bad optics, not for the rank antisemitism they were promoting)... but JVP has not, even though the Mapping Project’s entry for the ADL reads as follows:

Masquerading as a “civil rights” group, the ADL is a counterinsurgency and espionage organization whose mission is to protect the mutual interests of the US and Israeli governments, and to eliminate solidarity among oppressed peoples, especially concerning Palestine. The ADL spies on and criminalizes activists (using its connections to governments, police, schools, and corporations) while undermining their work by pushing its own state-sanctioned, pro-“Israel” agenda. And while the ADL claims to represent Jews and to fight “antisemitism” on their behalf, the organization has supported anti-Jewish state violence and sanitized Nazis. The ADL cannot be reformed: it must be dismantled and whatever resources it has should go towards repairing the many harms it has done. (Emphasis added.)

Of course, JVP has also engaged in similar conspiracy-toned antisemitic dogwhistles, such as this fun bit from their first Deadly Exchange video:

So clearly (to me at least), they have no problems with The Mapping Project’s tone and presentation.  

And this isn’t even going into JVP’s routine promotion of blood libel, their egregious double standards, their approving of pogroms, their active support for Hamas terrorists and demonization of Hamas’ victims, their attempted revisionism of Jewish history, their abject rejection of Jewish culture, and their other actions that show not just bias, but outright hatred for 90% of the world’s Jews.  

As one commentator put it, JVP as an organization is very much like Autism Speaks is to Autistic people--a thinly disguised hate group that views the people they’re supposedly speaking for as the problem, and themselves as promoting the Solution.  To this moderator, they’re the equivalent of the Association of German National Jews, who were also known as the Jews for Hitler; they wanted to abandon Judaism and embrace Naziism... and they got sent to the gas chambers anyway.

I looked up where all the people on the JVP rabbinical council were ordained, and these are my results.

For 3 of them there's no record I can find of having actually been ordained.

Also 1 of them has been dead since 2018.

But basically what we're seeing is that the majority of members went to the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. Some members of the JVP Rabbinical Council are also on staff at RRC.

This is in line with what I've heard about the current climate are RRC, which we know is currently having a huge problem with, ironically, their embrace of leftist political orthodoxy.

this is not the first time The Guardian has published an article speaking on Jewish issues written by a member of JVP. the horrible “weaponized trauma” article last year for the anniversary of 10/7 was by Naomi Klein, who’s on JVP’s board. I’m sure there are other examples of this, from other mainstream media as well, that I can’t remember off the top of my head.
