Another day, another activist telling me, "I don't think it matters if genocide is an inaccurate term. And I don't think it matters if Israel is intentionally killing children or it just happens as an undesired consequence of war. I'm going to keep using that term and making those accusations regardless because it evokes the emotions I want to evoke in the people I talk to. I want them to take action."
Okay, honey. But what action do you want them to take? Because you don't have to use the word "genocide" to get people to care about Palestinians or get their money to support humanitarian aid. We were doing that for years before y'all started using the word "genocide."
But claiming that Israel is intentionally butchering children and trying to wipe all Palestinians from the face of the Earth--can you guess what other kinds of actions that might invoke? I mean, if you are totally fine with telling people that Israelis are bloodthirsty monsters, and if you are also one of these ignorant people who thinks that all Israelis are Jews but STILL think you have a right to position yourself as an expert, you're basically saying that Jews are bloodthirsty monsters who like to kill children.
You think that kind of talk is going to help Palestinians? Or do you think maybe it's going to incite violence against Jews? Like every single act of blood libel before this?
My fellow non-Jews: put on your big person pants and take responsibility for your words.
Not only is it intellectually lazy as all fuck, it really doesn't help Palestinians.
But throwing around demonstrably false terms like apartheid and genocide, you allow Israelis to demonstrate how false they are: Israeli-Palestinians are on the supreme court, they're cops and judges and doctors, and they perform procedures on Jewish Israelis. So, case closed, introspection complete. Or, the war in Gaza doesn't fill any of the basic-most requirements for genocide, so everything is actually fiiiine.
But if we were to use words with actual intent and meaning, if we actually said "Palestinian citizens have all the same rights but face systemic harassment from officials and are made to jump through hoops sometimes to realize those rights," or "the war in Gaza takes cynical advantage of Israelis' trauma over October 7 and the leadership doesn't do all it can to prevent and then to prosecute unnecessary civilian deaths, knowing that the public is too war-weary to take meaningful action," maybe those statements are true. Maybe Israelis couldn't dismiss you with the very correct claim that you're uneducated and using shortcuts of shock-culture in order to make your point. Maybe holding up a mirror instead of a ghoulish caricature would actually make people look.

saw this really horrible comment today about how “Jewish women love to lie about rape,” and yesterday I saw what’s basically the inverse, “Jewish men love sexual assault, the majority of them are predators and rapists” along with the “61% of Israeli men” disinformation, and none of this is new - both are actually very, very old, both Jewish women being portrayed as liars and “harlots,” and Jewish men being portrayed as innately predatory - but it’s so disturbing seeing the way it’s gaining traction, and knowing that quite a bit of it in these awful posts is stemming from denial of the atrocities of 10/7 and of what was inflicted on the hostages (and those crimes were perpetrated against Israeli victims regardless of gender).
I was looking something up the other day and got a result from the 1930s subreddit, and there was a comment that had been removed by the moderators, but to which someone had replied (and that was still up) telling them they were an antisemite for saying that Jews are the cause of all the abuses in Hollywood and that they’d never generalize like that about any other group of people. this doesn’t mean there haven’t been abusive Jewish men, especially in positions of power, there certainly have been, and we know who they are, and the Jewish community as a whole overwhelmingly condemns them, but their individual behavior is used to smear and demonize world Jewry in a particular way. it’s scary seeing the stereotypes and suspicions and vitriolic attitudes continue to grow.
I’m not really going anywhere useful with this, but it occurred to me how often we mention that Jews are only 0.2% of the world population, and how few people ever really know or even interact with Jewish people. sometimes I wonder if it wouldn’t be more useful to point out that the majority, 99.8% of the world is non-Jewish. of course it’s easy to believe such terrible things and to scapegoat such a small group, and of course it’s almost impossible to combat it or to remove it from centuries’ worth of ingrained culture.
they can't have it both ways. If the majority of Jewish men are rapists, then Jewish women are probably being raped; if Jewish women are lying about being raped, then most Jewish men are probably not out there raping them.

Don't be silly, everybody knows we have no interiority or culture of our and only exist in interactions with nonjews where we maliciously manipulate them for no coherent reason

We should be able to hold traditional halachic opinions on sexuality without treating the people oriented that way badly. I am still frum. But the bullying and the fear I experienced because in my ignorance I did something was not okay. I had to learn on my own to reconcile my sexuality with being frum and it's a very real problem. Are you really surprised when so many end up just leaving and feeling resentful? I live a life any unmarried chareidi would be unashamed of today. Don't act like my existence is an inevitable sin.

I'll do you one better: We should be able to accept that halacha says one thing about sexuality, and our common sense says another, and be able to rule in favor of common sense.

Can you be frum and still do that? Also yes.
No one is checking my מוץ דחוק or my count of שבעה נקיים or making sure that there's no זרע לבטלה in my bedroom, because there's a very real common sense understanding that you can't police that shit, and it's worse חילול ה to try than it is to just let someone live a frum life even if you're sure they're not keeping all the precepts exactly as they should be kept. There's no reason for that not to be the norm around sexuality—and that's without even getting into the very legitimate arguments for why homosexuality is actually not as forbidden as we are all taught to believe.

Is it against halacha to live a fully gay life? yes
no its not?? it is against halacha to have male on male sex. that says absolutely nothing about lifestyle.
Romantic partnership where there is desire but not sex is not leading a fully gay life. "you guys can live together but not have sex" isn't really a very welcoming stance.

male entitlement in academic spaces is so boring. can’t tell you how many times i’ve been in a class and a girl gives a short, insightful analysis, and then a dude raises his hand and says “jumping off of that…” then says literally the same thing she said but longer and worse.
I hate to be that guy, but it doesn’t just happen to women. The assholes who do that will do that to anyone who’s analysis isn’t sufficiently complex and long winded for them.
Been done to me by people of both genders.
Also I have been guilty of doing this, so I apologize. Because I was overly excited and just couldn’t wait to talk…. yeah.

During Covid we had a graduate seminar thing on Zoom. One (mediocre) guy kept doing this over and over again. I, by far the oldest of the group at 35, eventually got to use my favorite line from Pride and Prejudice in context:
"Oh, I just want to add to what Esther was saying—"
"Thank you, Billy. You have delighted us long enough. Why don't we give some of the young ladies a chance to exhibit?"
Considering it was the English Literature graduate program, it got a good laugh, especially from the girls.
