My project is completed and delivered!
They commissioned me to assemble and complete a family heirloom left by their great aunt. It was such a delight to be a part of their family story and allow them to enjoy this piece of fiber art every day.
I am opening up slots for commissions of this type. If you know anyone who has a long forgotten project they would like to see completed, I would be happy to have a consultation and give them a quote.
Working on my first project to complete the work of someone who has passed away. This has been such a fulfilling project. I love feeling connected to people from the past. This blanket has been waiting around 50 years to be used and loved. I feel so honored to be part of the process of completing it.
If you know someone who has a project left unfinished by the living or the dead, have them contact me if they would be interested in a quote.
what you learn from hobbies:
consistent practice opens up whole worlds of skill that you couldn't imagine
making mistakes in the process of learning is not only natural, it is also essential
activities that you enjoy can give you more energy back than you spent on them
wow everything is so expensive
my hands hurt
Hey sorry if this isn't....really your thing? I mean it kinda is tangentially!
The National Park Service is looking for people who can read English Cursive, to help them transcribe old records from the Revolutionary War!
You can also help them by tagging old pictures and articles (I know a lot of people here would be really good at that!) to help with searches
They have instructions and even short little videos you can watch to learn how best to help them! Idk seemed like a fun thing some people might wanna help with! There's apparently close to 8 million (iirc) records and they say some of them are really fascinating!
Here's the link to the announcement:

thank you! I fully cannot read writing from that era, but maybe someone else can

<:o) Happy New Year!!! <:•]
<:•} This is Walnut the Clown! <:•3
I crocheted him over the holiday season, he’s kind of inspired by Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy.
I gave his outfit plenty of ruffles and stripes to make sure it’s sufficiently clownish. I used some puffy yarn for his hair, made a yarn pompom for his hat, and added some bows and funky buttons to his clothes.
I’m really happy with how cheeky his expression turned out, I think he’s definitely my most mischievous-looking clown ( • ̀ω•́ ).✧⊹.°˖
Dog keeps stealing my ball of yarn and all I can think of is this manuscript illustration 🥺
the look on both the dog's and the spinner's faces tells me this was absolutely drawn from life

I aspire to have Bev’s confidence
Happy Star Trek Day!
kira seems to wear a lot of (what looks like to me) crochet when out of uniform. its such good flavouring for her character - both that it gives her a hobby that exists outside of the show, and that textile arts are associated with working class women (especially here in Ireland, which bajor is partly inspired by) and dykes ! I really want to make one of her vests for myself
I have a lot of head canon about textiles on Bajor because of the ridiculous amount of crochet and woven clothes they wear on the show, and the assertion that Bajor was renowned for their craftsman and artisans.
It never occurred to me to imagine Kira creating her own garments. When she is asked to become an artisan to follow her D’jarra (cast) she attempts many mediums and fails miserably. Did she always crochet, but didn’t see it as an art so much as a practical skill to create much needed garments during the occupation?
Can you picture her holed up in a cave, or by a campfire in the hills around Dahkur Province diligently stitching away during a rare peaceful moment. Did she learn from her mother, father or a member of her resistance cell? Does she think of them while she works on a baby blanket for Yoshi in the O’Brian’s living room?
K so not to be dramatic or anything, but there's a free vintage French pattern book available on antiquepatternlibrary so if you like to crochet/weave/make pixel art/tie epic friendship bracelets don't walk- RUN.
It has scenes from aesop's fables! Cherubs doing things! Beheadings! Greek muses! Little farm people! Intricate floral pattern! Goth stained-glass window like patterns! Fun little corner pieces! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee

Oooooh I gotta check this site out
I can't believe more people don't know about the antique pattern library! All those public domain, vintage handiwork books and magazines are scanned in pdf format, and FREE TO DOWNLOAD! Languages include French, Italian, German, and English. It just does need to be mentioned that most of the earlier English publications are British, so American users need to make sure to convert the instructions as necessary. Especially crochet instructions, where a British double crochet is an American single. No, I don't know why 🤣
Publications include (for those who can't see the picture) :
Battenberg Lace, Beading, BerlinWork, Bobbin lace, Bookbinding (yes, bookbinding!!!)
Calligraphy, Carpentry, Crochet, Cross Stitch, Cutwork
Drawing, Dressmaking
Embroidered Net, Embroidery
Filet, Filet Crochet, Flower Arranging
Glass
Hardanger
Irish Crochet
Knitting, Knotting
Lace (soooo many forms of lace making)
Macrame
Paper, Point Lace
Quilting
Ribbonwork
Sewing
Tatting, Tulle Embroidery
Various
Waxwork, Woodworking
Workbasket Magazine -- a publication that usually posted multiple different crafts in each issue.
It's a wonderful site, and I've loved it for nearly 20 years!

THE SITE
Oh hey, do you know what time it is? It is highly specific resource time!
Today we have the Royal School of Needlework Stitch Bank! There are HUNDREDS of stitch types in the RSN Stitch Bank.
And more added regularly, let’s look at a recent addition
I picked the first one in the 25 recently added Elizabethan stitches, the Elizabethan French Stitch
The stitch bank provides written and photo tutorials as well as a video option to learn to do it yourself. There are examples of the stitch in use, resources, references, everything but a needle and thread!

Little old Italian lady: Do you have zucchini?
Me: Yes, right here.
Lady: Is how much?
Me: $2.99 a pound.
Lady: It's usually $1.49.
Me: Yes, in the summer.
Lady, pauses, then grabs two: I put it in a soup.
Me: Oh nice, what kind are you making?
Lady: You will not fantasize about my soup.
And then she walked away. "You will not fantasize about my soup" will be in my head forever. I love you, little old Italian lady.
