Design

This project was excellent practice for conceptualising a short story through some high fidelity frames. The illustrations were inspired by a song (Waiting for the End by Linkin Park) and the song’s lyrics were incorporated and stylised to match the narrative of the frames. Soon after submitting I realised that conventional animatics have a different format whereas mine was static but slightly more refined. Nevertheless, the conceptualisation process was educational and great practice. All illustrations were done on the iPad app Sketchbook. 

For the last illustration, many bits and pieces came together in Photoshop, from video stills, online images and a hand-made textured canvas. The finalised illustration isn’t initially as striking as the other two, but when looked at carefully, carries just as much descriptive detail. 

For the first big project in 2nd year Interaction Design, a small business in Cape Town was selected with the goal to redesign the business’ website. I chose one of my go-to bicycle stores, Bike Lane. It was interesting getting to know the owner as well as interviewing walk-in customers in person and others over voice- and video calls. User personas were created based on the gathered information and the website was designed with them in mind. A style-guide was compiled and used in the final improved homepage layout. Just to be clear: the website was never officially launched, this was simply a practical UX/UI exercise.

This looping sequence was made in Illustrator and After Effects. This was my first ever attempt at creating an infographic. It was tougher than it looks. Firstly, all the information had to be gathered and summarised. Then it could be curated in Illustrator. In some cases, icons had to be used, as well as colour divisions, font size alterations and logos. While it was difficult to execute, it was also tons of fun and surprisingly, helpful as a reference sheet for exam preparations. 

‘A collection of something’ was the only project brief for this one. I tried out a collection of socks to print on lino but found my collection of tools making for a more structured composition. Variations of textures, strokes and colours were tried out to get an idea of the finalised composition. Eventually, I found that I liked things simple and submitted the first pictured lino print as my final. For the red strip, a horizontal piece was cut out, carved, painted red and slid back into its original position. All prep work was done on Sketchbook on the iPad Pro.

This app-designing project was a fantastic look into user interface design. The mock app being designed in Sketch was Disciplan, a visual tracker that displays users’ daily habits in a clean, simple way. With only stock footage and Battleship Potemkin (1925) to use, this re-arrangement project was a true challenge. Not only was it the first time Premiere Pro was being used, the soundless modern stock videos’ quality was far more superior to that of the old film footage that was also to be used and doing the storyboard justice was nearly impossible. Nonetheless, it was a humbling learning process that forced me to learn new skills such as storyboarding, music composition, narration and all sorts of film editing tricks. 

The language-learning mobile app Duolingo was used in this case study with a friend, @dampginger to see how well the app was designed, the features of its user interface and generally, what its positives and pain-points were. 

These are 2 of 40 illustrations for an illustration project, completed in charcoal. This project forced me to sharpen my observation and drawing skills. By the end of the project, I’d built up a habit of illustrating one item every day. 

This was the first project, an introduction to Interaction Design, in which a product was to be redesigned. The final project included user personas, task flows, user scenarios, user flows and technical improvement sketches. It was fun reinventing a penny board and using the imagination in a realistic setting to improve an everyday object. This project made me realise once again that Interaction Design is something I have a genuine interest in. 

For this group project, a storyboard was drawn up for a trailer, in which a man has an encounter with Bigfoot. Style-frames were my responsibility and were made using Sketchbook on my iPad Pro. The last picture was used as the cover for our PDF presentation (which can also be used as a desktop background). 

Another physical artwork of mine, this time printed onto bags and shirts (not pictured). The bear featured in this work is from one of my earlier works (see Animals in Line and Colour, January 2018). The theme was ‘Happy Days’ and to me, funny situations (like a grizzly bear in a part setting) makes my days happy. I mainly used Autodesk’s Sketchbook app for compiling and layering elements. Printing, colour-filling and screen-printing followed. 

At around the same time of working on Tomcat magazine (June, 2018), there was another project underway; a zine, also designed in InDesign. With this zine- an independent small magazine that can easily be Xeroxed- there was a lot more designing freedom. Even the zine’s theme was up to me. I chose the theme ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) as it was something I had been looking into at the time. I explored my own interpretations and went to others to document their meanings. All of the work is my own except the black and white images on page 6. It was fun creating a plume-like burst of colour that threads throughout the zine according to the pages’ content.
