i was chatting with a coworker about this whole saga today and someone nearby popped into the convo to be like “you know, you can use chatgpt to write a demand letter!” and i sort of blinked and went, “okay. i did it myself, though.” and she was like, “yeah but it can tell you what laws and stuff are relevant” and i was like, “i also did research myself.” and she was very well-meaning but she said “chatgpt” like six more times before she left and it was genuinely baffling to me, this insistence on it.

and in the one hand, did i enjoy spending hours researching housing regulations in my state? not especially. drafting this email was stressful. but on the other hand, did i learn a lot by doing that research? yeah, i did. i’m more prepared for my current and future leases. i used some of that info to make decisions about a new renter’s insurance policy. i already told three different people about things i learned that are relevant to their leases that they didn’t know yet. (pro tip: see if you’re supposed to be getting annual interest payments on your security deposit! also look up what specific appliances your landlords must legally provide as of 2026.) i also got to reconnect with my cousin for a bit because her job gave her specific insight on part of the situation, and i’d much rather do that than have a chatbot make shit up for me.

also, i drafted that email with the power of friendship (friends angry on our behalf) and spite (from landlords telling me not to do my research). chatgpt could never.

Please never use generative AI tools for any kind of legal dispute. It does not know what laws or court cases are. It will make up something that sounds favorable to you, and you will get crushed. There are free resources out there to learn this stuff. And sometimes attorneys will offer free consultations or volunteer at a free legal clinic. OP didn't just do it themselves to do extra work or some shit. This is really the only viable way to do things short of hiring a professional to do it for you.

ChatGPT is not easier or faster in matters like this. It is a shot to the foot.

Ah yeah.. it's because a large number of us (mostly but not exclusively women) were told that the correct amount of nutrients to eat is none. Eat raw celery and lettuce they say because then the calorie content is net negative because it take more energy to eat it than it has! Not eat celery because it's tasty and has macronutrients, vitamins and minerals. Not eat lettuce because it also is tasty and makes a great base for other tasty and nutritious foods. Literally try to eat foods that are calorifically net negative because not supplying your body with nutrition is the healthy thing to do. I'm relatively certain that celery and lettuce aren't actually net negative, but that was the messaging I got growing up. Not directly from people I know, from media. My mother didn't have a good relationship with food as I think is true for many of us. She didn't push that on to me exactly but the poor thinking patterns would overtake her from time to time, and come out as comments about the food choices I made when I was a teenager. With the power of ADHD - infinite forgetfulness, these didn't have much affect on me, self-image wise, but I did have to put some effort into unlearning the ideas that were so pervasive. "If you go out, have salad and ask for the salad dressing to be put to the side, or left off altogether!" "Only drink water, or green tea. If you *must* have a coffee, leave out the milk" - it was a given that you also shouldn't have sugar.

"Have lean white meat with salad for dinner!" - usually chicken, but could also be fish or turkey

"Swap your burger for a low-fat tortilla wrap"

"Have rice cakes with low-fat cottage cheese and tomato for a healthy snack" - the crisp round kind made of puffed rice.

The goal wasn't a balanced nutritious diet, though lip-service was paid to eating the recommended 5 servings of vegetables (not fruits) per day. The goal was making us small, and ashamed when we couldn't do it, and compliant, because we were underfed, weak, tired and mentally ill. I know very very few people who arrived in adulthood without some trace of these ideas.

The messaging has changed since I was a teenager, but the goal is the same. And in some ways it's worse, because now any random stranger with an internet connection can contribute to the psychosis.

So, I was working in a lab, right? My job in the lab was preparing a pure, concentrated enough sample of virus. This is tricky since, y'know, viruses require hosts to replicate, but you then need to get the host cells (and the pieces of the host cells that died!) out of the sample while still keeping the viruses. Once I'd finished and the samples had been sent to the database for analysis as well as a second one sent to be frozen for future reference, there was still some left over that needed to be disposed of.

I, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, waited carefully for the lab director to be deep in conversation with someone else on the other side of the laboratory. And then I took my chance.

Test tubes, as it turns out, are really bad as shot glasses. Their shape turns any liquid inside into a stream, so you really can't knock it back quickly - it takes a couple seconds. Additionally, the best way I can describe the taste of virus concentrate was "sterile rot". A very unique kind of bad! Made worse by the test tube's inefficiency as a shot glass.

(by the way we were studying bacteriophages, not animal viruses. these viruses are too specialized on attacking prokaryotes to even recognize our cells as targets at all, according to studies.)

(but also like. if the viruses managed to successfully switch hosts and killed me with a violent infection, itd still be worth it.)

pop health science is so annoying bc it'll be like "did you know? eating strawberries will give you mega cancer" and you're like pfft whatever begone influencer. but sometimes then you'll see a reasonably credible article like "Study Shows Possible Link Between Strawberries and Mega Cancer" and you're not usually the type to follow that kind of thing religiously but idk maybe you should consider not eating strawberries? but then there's another article saying "Strawberry/Mega Cancer Study Debunked" and it turns out the original study had a sample size of 3 and was funded by Big Blueberry, and strawberries may have a small connection to mega cancer but only if you are genetically predisposed to mega cancer and eat 50 strawberries every day. so you return to your strawberry eating life. but whenever you eat strawberries in public someone tells you about the mega cancer.

'A popular fanfic author stopped updating her fic because she said that the stress of being constantly falsely accused of using AI was a witch hunt and it was destroying her mental health to the extent that she needed to take a break from writing, leading to multiple online discussions defending her and debates about AI accusations and how You Can't Really Tell So Leave Her Alone, and then someone realised that there were Claude coding artefacts in her fics and that it was a super pervasive problem in that particular fandom, proven definitively by looking at the source coding of each work on AO3, and she denied it for a bit but then ultimately admitted that oopsie, she had been using genAI all along, and then she deleted all of her fics off AO3 and people got mad because they were being denied access to their favourite fics, even though they now knew definitively that they were genAI slop, and then it turned out that she'd actually stopped updating the fic on AO3 in the first place because she'd been shopping it around to agents and editors as an original work with the serial numbers filed off, and she'd been in conversations with a publisher which ultimately got dropped because she'd lied to them about her AI use' oh cool, so we're in Hell, then

This may change, but so far as I have seen, the courts of various jurisdictions are concluding that artistic works created with AI are not copyrightable. No traditional publisher is going to want to touch that legal quagmire with a ten-foot barge pole. Now, if a different precedent is set and that legal issue is settled in favour of AI works being copyrightable, I'm sure they'll change their minds about it so fast. You also won't get published that way though. Why publish your AI slop when they can create their own for even less* than they would have paid you.

watching my husband get diagnosed with and treated for sleep apnea over the last year was not the thing that radicalized me re: weight and healthcare but my goodness it has solidified my stances.

sleep apnea is more common in people who are fat.

society decided for some reason that this meant that being fat causes sleep apnea. its often difficult to get referrals for sleep apnea treatment if you are fat, because some PCPs will tell you try losing weight first.

turns out!! having untreated sleep apnea causes weight gain in a not-insignificant number of people. it also makes it fucking impossible for many people to lose weight.

my husband worked out the same amount before he got a cpap as he does now. there have been no major diet changes either. yet he has been losing weight -- and gaining muscle tone -- consistently since he started using a cpap in january.

also, his blood pressure -- which was high, which docs blamed on his weight/diet -- went down significantly within one month of starting cpap treatment, before his weight changed significantly.

ANYWAYS. this is getting long. two final thoughts.

- if you are exhausted constantly for "no reason", and especially if you snore, you should probably ask your doctor about getting tested for sleep apnea. it is extremely common -- estimates are around 1 in 10 people -- and is also wildly under-diagnosed. like, some estimates suggest that 80% of people with moderate-severe sleep apnea are undiagnosed.

Totally normal for a legitimate for-profit company to refuse to reclaim or stop running their products even after they're no longer being paid to do so. I'm sure it's very normal to just keep running your service for free when your contract's been terminated. Spending money to continue running cameras that supposedly no one is looking at is definitely not an indicator they are just run by the federal government to spy on everyone and only a wacko conspiracy theorist would think so.

I've been saying this for years. I got on LLM (large learning model) bandwagon years ago for research purposes. There is so much scientific data out there that if a program could help us get through it faster, we could really get somewhere. Anything that needs 4 or more variables assessed in tandem is so much faster with an LLM. Plus doing it as a human is super tedious and prone to errors. No one wants to do it or grad students are forced to do it alongside other responsibilities. So it would be great if an LLM could help.

LLMs learn one thing (and one thing only!) and can repeat the learned data in any way you require. Such as summaries and graphs. They can predict in the sense that after looking at 1000 items in a sequence they can guess what comes next. But the only accurate thing about them is them repeating data back at you in a condensed format.

Then ChatGPT comes out and I'm of course highly dubious of the term "AI". Lo and behold, any further reading on it reveals its just an LLM, same as any other supposed "AI" out there.

Again, LLMs do not produce something new. They repeat back what was given in the way you want. So "AI" scrapes the internet and just spews the main Google page at you but with a twist. The twist is the bad part because every extra instruction you give an LLM on how to repeat back to you, every bit more complicated it gets, the more likely it is to make mistakes. Programmers working with LLMs often have the program spit out the results of every individual step when this happens so they can fix it and move on. "AI" does not do this and people don't think to ask. People don't know to ask. They've been sold the idea that this machine thinks for itself.

It doesn't. It just echoes information from others in any way you like.

The more complicated the order (such as condensing a summary into a few paragraphs, or using a sassy tone, or explaining via pop culture analogies, etc), the more likely for things to go wrong. Because then it's trying to combine multiple learning models in one. An LLM trained on history can probably give good answers. An LLM trained on vocal tone might approach accurate sounds. An LLM trained on analogies will always make mistakes (because it would need a lot of data on each item its trying to compare). But a single LLM trying to do all three at once is going to encounter redundancies and contradictions, each request guiding it to a different outcome.

LLMs, "AI", are an echo. Echoes are just our own words bounced back. Echoes can be fun to play with. Echoes can be somewhat helpful in navigating the world when we analyze the way they bounce back.

Echoes are not another intelligent being. Echoes are not thinking. Echoes are not providing anything else that hasn't already been said before.

Please use LLMs to help make individualized cancer treatments and optimize power grids and accurately predict the weather. Please do not use "AI" for art or writing or war. Thats just the companies trying to get more use and money than the smaller user base they would naturally have.

You guys rlly don't realise how much knowledge is still not committed to the internet. I find books all the time with stuff that is impossible to find through a search engine- most people do not put their magnum opus research online for free and the more niche a skill is the less likely you are to have people who will leak those books online. (Nevermind all the books written prior to the internet that have knowledge that is not considered "relevant" enough to digitise).

Whenever people say that we r growing up with all the world's knowledge at our fingertips...it's not necessarily true. Is the amount of knowledge online potentially infinite? Yes. Is it all knowledge? No. You will be surprised at the niche things you can discover at a local archive or library.
