The pleats Issey Miyake uses seem to permit the expression of movement in a very interesting way. All fabrics move with the body, but his seem to celebrate using methods that somehow seem related to the work of Étienne-Jules Marey, the French scientist and photographer, which was very influential to 20th century art. Marey used photography against its reputation for fixity, showing states of becomingness, motion, and transformation. I have the impression (but not the conclusion) that Miyake’s pleats function in much the same way. In a certain regard, they illustrate the animation of the human body. I want to explore this further.
