"He didn't even remember his name until I told him. He has complete amnesia of at least the entire Hail Mary project, probably more than that. Maybe his whole life." That, more than anything, is what's terrifying. Not the vastness of space beyond what any human has seen, not the death of her friend, not the knowledge that she is going to die out here, years from her home. What scares her is that the only person left, the man who may actually be capable of saving the world, doesn't remember anything.

This is from the end of a little pre-canon WFS fic-- a conversation between Arundelle and the older brother I've headcanoned up for her over the years. (I don't know exactly where he came from; I'm not much one for making repeating-character OCs. XD)

He stood and stretched, eliciting a few pops from his spine. “The stove should be warm now; how about you start some eggs and bean brew while I check on Ma?” She pulled the blanket closer around her shoulders and nodded, hopping off of the seat and wincing when her bare feet hit the cold floor. Hanley padded off down the small hallway, and she turned around and glanced at the window one more time. The frost at the top of the glass was melting, and by standing on her toes she could see the castle at the top of the hill, shining against a blue sky in the morning light.  She smiled to herself and slipped off toward the kitchen. 

Caeden smiled, clinging to his facade of being fine, though it was clearly forced. It never reached his tired eyes. After a moment, the smile dropped.

She reached for his hand and squoze it. When she pulled back, blood came off on her fingers.

"It hurts," said Caeden, staring at the ground.

This is from my WIP, Vidor Must Die, when they meet one of my characters for the first time.

“Who?” he spread his hands in a shrug. “Are,” he flapped his hands because there was no hand motion for a being verb. “You?” he pointed at the man. “What? Do? You? Want? With? Us?” Dirk froze with his hands extended to all of them, grinning at the small man in the middle of the clearing expectantly, apparently very proud of himself and his “talking to primitive creatures” bit. For a long, loaded moment, the man stared at him, studying him with his mismatched eyes narrowed, mystified. Then, without batting an eye, he turned his gaze on Fyodor and shifted on his feet. “Your little friend has a big mouth,” he declared gruffly, in perfect Treaty Tongue speech.

Kael rolled his eyes and got to his feet, moving over to where Trista remained bent over the pot. Her eyes were tracking its contents with such intensity you’d think the pot was about to explode. “I think I burnt it slightly,” she said with a frown, and Cody piped up from his cot in confusion. “Burnt it? It’s flavored water, how could you possibly burn it?!” “I don’t know! It just happened!” Trista replied in protest, grabbing a spoon to stir as she continued, “If it’s any constellation, Cody—“ “Consolation.” Trista flapped her hand at Kael dismissively. “Yes that too. Whatever.”
