“Heeello,” I said.

“Hey man,” Dally responded from the other end. My heart picked up a beat at the sound of his rough, flat voice. “Good thing you didn’t come to the Dingo, it’s an absolute pigsty in there. Some guy threw up and then his chick threw up after seeing him.”

I laugh at the imagery. My fingers toyed with the coily string attached to the wall phone, winding it tight around my wrist until it dug into my skin. “Oh, shit, it’s a like a vomit-con!”

Dally hummed in agreement, “Look, let me know when yer heading to Buck’s tomorrow. I gotta see if Sylvia needs a pickup or somethin’.”

My stomach dropped at the mention of the brunette, twisting even tighter when I thought of Lilly. From the other room, I could still hear her hiccuping and huffing snot, though she finally seemed to be calming down.

“Listen, Dal…” I shook my head, even though he couldn’t see me. “I dunno if I can go. Lilly’s not feeling too good.”

“By tomorrow? Then who’s going to flirt their way to a discount wit’ me?” He asked. I chuckled to myself, a small warmth spreading within my chest.

“I had something to tell ya, actually,” Dally grumbled. There was rustling on his end, likely the harsh scraping of his leather jacket against the glass of the phone booth.

I perked up, like a dog waiting for a command, and held my breath. My mind raced trying to imagine what he could possibly say—to be the only one on his mind. Does he want to come over? Had he been thinking of me? The silence stretched, heavy and prolonged, before I had enough of it. “Yeah? What is it?”

“Ah, fuck!”

A loud bang on the booth’s metal wall crashed through the receiver.

“Dal? You all right?” I called out.

“Stupid fuckin’—my chain!” Dally snarled. “It snapped. Went right down the hole!'“

The “hole” in question was a gap where the concrete base met the metal frame. Some local kids had pried the floorboard up months ago looking for dropped quarters, and the city hadn’t bothered to fix it since.

“That sucks,” I muttered, not knowing what to say.

“Maaan, I’ll see you later.”
