Round 1 Complete!
Here's the current state of the brackets
Round 2 starting when I feel like it.
It's my birthday next week, and I've managed to strongarm my family into driving 2 hours to the nearest international airport over the weekend so I can go planespotting!!
I'm very excited! Any tips for a newbie??
Hmm, maybe look up the flight schedule ahead of time so you know what time of day the planes you're most interested in seeing will be there.

hi!! I'm currently a little bit obsessed with flying boats/seaplanes/amphibious aircraft and I was wondering if you or your followers have some book recommendations on them
I don't have any recommendations off hand, so I'll just punt this one to my followers.

hello! not a plane identification, but i wanted to ask if you knew why this plane's con trails were so wonky? does take-off just do that? I don't think it's especially windy today. Unsure what plane it was, my best guess is the one i attached. Thanks!
A short distance behind the plane, the contrail gets caught up in and contained by the wingtip vortices.
(in the picture is a different phenomenon from contrails, but it illustrates my point)
At a longer distance behind the plane, the vortices become unstable as they start to break down and dissipate, so that's likely what's causing the wonky shape. Turbulence can contribute to this as well.
why not

Boeing 367-80 (707 prototype)
There was a famous incident where test pilot Tex Johnston did an unauthorized barrel roll during a demonstration flight for airline executives.
Johnston is best known for performing a barnstormer-style barrel roll maneuver with Boeing's pioneering 367-80 jet in a demonstration flight over Lake Washington outside Seattle, on August 7, 1955. Bill Allen, the then-president of Boeing, had invited many aero-space and airline executives to enjoy Seattle's Seafair aboard his yacht. Allen had asked Johnston to make a fly-by over Seafair to show off Boeing's new airliner. Johnston performed the barrel roll during the fly-by, reversed course with a chandelle, and performed a second barrel roll on the way back. The following Monday, Allen called Johnston to his office and asked what he thought he was doing, to which he responded with "I was selling airplanes," and explained the maneuver was not hazardous. He kept his position as a test pilot, and did not get in legal trouble for his actions on the condition that he did not do it again.

Do you have recommendations for learning to distinguish between different commercial airliners? I've been looking for a chart or something but haven't had any luck so I'm still only able to tell some of the more obvious ones apart π
I had some trouble with that myself until I started working at an airport and seeing them every day.
One of the most obvious things to look for is the number and placement of the engines, though most new airliners since the '80s have had two wing-mounted engines, so that isn't always helpful. Some of the other features to looks for are number of wheels, shape of nose, cockpit windows, and tailcone, the arrangement of exit doors, and the winglets.
For example
The A320 (left) has side cockpit windows that slope down a bit, but then the rearmost window is flat on the bottom. On the 737 (right) both windows slope down and join at a point. The cockpit window design is pretty standardized across most Airbusses and Boeings (excepting the A350 and 787). The A320 Also has a rounder nose, smaller winglets (newer versions have bigger ones though), and a tailcone that extends behind the stabilizers. The 737 has a pointier nose, often but not always has scimitar winglets that extend downwards, and has a tailcone that's almost flush with the stabilizers (though on the MAX it extends back more).
If I made a writeup like this for every common airliner we'd be here all day, but those are the sorts of features I generally look for.
For the specific variant, often a good clue is the exit doors.
The A319 has one overwing exit per side, the A320 has two, and the A321 forgoes overwing exits and instead has four full-sized doors.
With some planes though the variants don't have such a clear difference and it sometimes comes down to just looking at reference images and counting windows.
